PhD position summary/title: Two PhD cadidates for “Rouw zit in de familie”

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate Satellite-based characterisation and modelling of human influences on wildfire dynamics
Wildfires are powerful forces of nature that shape ecosystems, degrade air quality and influence climate. Human activities modify fire characteristics through land use change, intentional or accidental ignitions and by active fire management. However, the complex interactions between climate change, vegetation shifts, and human behaviour—and their consequences for wildfires—remain poorly understood.
Within the recently awarded project INFLAMES, we are looking for a motivated PhD Candidate to strengthen our team. The position aims to use Earth Observation data to improve understanding and modelling capabilities to provide more reliable projections of future fire dynamics and their effects on humans, and to provide recommendations for fire management. The study is focused on regions in East and Southern Africa.
Your tasks include characterisation of spatio-temporal patterns of fire dynamics in the target region from satellite data; the development of an empirical model linking land-use change and socio-economic developments to fire dynamics; the assessment of effects of landscape fires on urban air quality using satellite and model data; and the development of a conceptual model to support decisions regarding fire management in the focus region.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Behavioral and Cognitive Mechanisms of Sustainable Consumer Food Choices
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to investigate how forgotten protein crops can become part of everyday consumer choices. This PhD will explore how product properties, multisensory experiences, recipe context, presentation strategies, and societal associations shape consumer acceptance and decision-making.
Your work will combine sensory perception, eye-tracking, and immersive virtual reality simulations to understand how people respond to meals and products in realistic purchase and dining environments. The project centers on how people look, intend, and choose, and how immersive technologies can help us understand real-life judgment and decision processes
You will work with VR-based supermarket and dining simulations, eye-tracking tools, and behavioral experiments to explore how visual presentation, context, and multisensory cues shape people’s choices.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Micro-Robotics
Minimally invasive interventions increasingly require tools capable of sensing, actuation, and manipulation at sub-millimetre scales. Micro-robotic systems enable highly miniaturized devices that can operate in confined anatomical environments and interact with biological tissue with high spatial precision.
This PhD project focuses on the development of surgical micro-robotic devices, with emphasis on micro- and nano-fabrication and optical technologies for sensing, actuation, and control. The research includes the design, fabrication, and experimental validation of micro-scale robotic platforms, integration of optical and imaging-based feedback, and development of modeling and control strategies for operation in complex biological environments. Particular attention will be given to scalable fabrication and integration of photonic sensing or actuation.
The project is conducted within the Surgical Robotics Laboratory and the Department of Biomechanical Engineering at the University of Twente, in close collaboration with the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology and clinical and international partners.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Software Security
In this PhD project, we intend to research automated techniques to analyse, exploit, and patch software vulnerabilities, after the detection phase. In fact, current tools, such as fuzzers, detect more potential flaws than organisations can fix. We plan to design and develop automated techniques to holistically analyse discovered vulnerabilities, assess their causes and risks, and prioritise the critical ones. Unlike prior work, we analyse infrastructures as a whole, instead of individual applications, allowing for prompt, effective mitigation and reducing costs.
As the prospective PhD candidate, you will be appointed for a period of four years, and you are expected to perform high-quality research that gets published at some of the top security conferences and implement open-source research prototypes that the community can benefit from. The SCS group is internationally recognized in the broad areas of systems, AI, and data security and is unique for its collaborative and friendly atmosphere, in which researchers have considerable freedom in picking their projects and receive substantial support from supervisors and colleagues. We publish in top-tier conferences to maximize our visibility and impact, and we can guide you toward becoming a top researcher and boosting your CV. Besides, during the PhD, you will have the opportunity to broaden your knowledge and network by joining international exchange programs, participating in national and international conferences, and visiting other research institutes and universities worldwide.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position JUST FUTURES: ReStor(y)ing Multispecies Futures Through Digital Media
Your research will engage critically and creatively with environmental data (e.g., pollution data, biodiversity surveys, citizen science data, fossil and natural history collections at Museumfabriek, Natura Docet or Artis). This includes questioning what counts as ‘relevant’ environmental data, adding a critical artistic dimension to current academic debates around the politics of knowledge co-production and scientific research. You will develop multi-sensory ways of encountering and envisioning future scenarios that use environmental data to give voice to diverse species in ways that reclaim technology and the digital as critical immersive artistic practice. To this aim, you will explore different typologies of ‘rurban’ spaces across the Twente region (e.g., where rural-urban relationships illustrate climate and/or biodiversity related injustices) and conduct artistic experimentation with data and code. The focus will be on making frictions and controversies characteristic of different ‘rurban’ spaces and practices publicly debatable in experiential ways to support collective imagination of biodiverse and climate just futures. By taking a multispecies perspective, your research will place a relational understanding of ecology at the center of future speculative / immersive scenarios, which will be exhibited in the form of multi-sensory participatory installations. These installations may be developed in collaboration with artistic residencies and cultural organisations like Tetem – Platform for Digital Culture and Making Culture in Twente.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position JUST FUTURES: ReStor(y)ing (Un)just Land-Water Relationships Through Art-activism
You will develop a ‘rurban’ lens that examines past, present, and future rural-urban (dis)connections in the context of different cases of land-water relationships, including areas with recent (Twente region) and longer (Aruba) histories of experiencing water scarcity. By engaging with environmental art-activism, the project will “re-story” land-water relationships and potential rurban futures through the development of situated narratives that bring to the fore different more-than-human voices, including those often marginalised. To this end, you will develop an approach to engage humans and more-than-humans as actors, participants, stake- and knowledge holders (e.g., rivers, animals, microorganisms, fish, future generations, technology), and collaborate with artists and artistic residencies. Moreover, you will explore ways of harnessing the potential of art-activism for climate justice. Within the JUST ART project, collaborations are envisioned with diverse societal and cultural partners to support creative dissemination and public engagement strategies adapted to context. These may include an event (e.g., exhibition, performance, installation) at Rijksmuseum Twente and pop-up events at specific case study locations or in cultural / community centres to connect with local stakeholders, in Twente and Aruba.
