PhD position summary/title: 2 PhD students for the Department of Political Science
Forest Governance Dilemmas examines how Swedish forest policy addresses complex trade‑offs in a period marked by shifting EU politics, geopolitical uncertainty and climate change. The project investigates how forest governance is shaped by tensions between environmental objectives, economic interests and landowners’ rights, and how these dilemmas are managed at EU, national and local levels.
By combining analyses of political decision-making with studies of forest owners, environmental organizations and other key actors, the project explores which governance models and policy instruments are most effective in achieving multiple objectives. The goal is to generate new knowledge about how forest policy works in practice and to support policymakers in developing more effective, flexible and inclusive forest governance.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in plant science
This doctoral project investigates the molecular mechanisms that govern plant development, with a particular focus on symmetry breaking processes in tomato flowers. Symmetry breaking is a fundamental biological phenomenon in which initially symmetrical structures transform into complex and specialized forms. This process is essential for the development of multicellular organisms and plays a key role in shaping the remarkable diversity observed across plant and animal species. The project combines experimental and computational approaches, making use of advanced techniques such as genomics, proteomics, genome editing and protein engineering. A central aim will be to identify and characterize the molecular regulators, including microproteins, that control flower development. The PhD student will work at the interface of live cell imaging, mathematical modelling, and functional genomics, receiving experimentally testable predictions generated by state-of-the-art predictive models. These predictions will be rigorously validated using advanced molecular tools and genome engineering approaches to uncover the regulatory mechanisms underlying development.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Physical Geography, focusing on carbon fluxes in Arctic headwaters
Northern high latitudes are subject to pronounced warming, with expected major impacts on the carbon cycle of coupled land and water ecosystems. This project aims to investigate climate impacts on the lateral export of carbon from and the subsequent turnover and fate of this carbon from streams and lakes. The project will include comparative studies of the magnitude and control of land-water carbon fluxes across various vegetation, permafrost and climate conditions in the Arctic, experimental tests of climate driven changes in carbon export from land and turnover and release of greenhouse gases (CO2 and CH4) from headwaters, and use of machine learning and process-based model for large scale assessments and projections of the land-water carbon cycle to variation in climate conditions. The detailed direction of the PhD studies will be discussed and decided jointly with the selected candidate. Field studies will be mainly carried out in northern Boreal-Arctic Sweden, complemented by studies in other Arctic regions. The project includes collaborations with researchers from different disciplines (terrestrial and aquatic biogeochemistry, modelling, hydrology) and use of field and laboratory infrastructure at the Climate Impacts Research Centre (CIRC) and Abisko Scientific Research Station.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Computing Science with a focus on Machine Learning for Software Security
Our societies rely on computer systems, and increasingly so. Unfortunately, computer systems can be the target of malicious applications—malware. These malicious applications can be complicated pieces of software developed by well organized criminal gangs or by government agencies to attack anything from private computers and smart phones to critical national infrastructures. There has been an increased interest in adapting and developing the latest machine learning methods for the purpose of malware detection, and preliminary results are encouraging. The specific goals of this project include to develop novel machine learning methods to improve malware detection.
The doctoral student position is offered within a research project financed by the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP). The doctoral student will be supervised by Tommy Löfstedt, Docent and Associate Professor and head of the Machine Learning group, and Alexandre Bartel, Professor and head of the Software Engineering and Security (SES) group, both at the Department of Computing Science, Umeå University.
Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is Sweden’s largest individual research program ever, a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education, and faculty recruitment. The program addresses research on artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and software, acting in collaboration with humans, adapting to their environment through sensors, information and knowledge, and forming intelligent systems-of-systems. The vision of WASP is excellent research and competence in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and software for the benefit of Swedish society and industry.

Systematic Theology studies Christian beliefs and doctrines, focusing on their content, interpretation, and internal relationships. The specialization also addresses the sources underpinning these doctrines and their relationships to broader cultural and intellectual traditions, including contemporary science, philosophy, and public discourse. Philosophy of religion and theological ethics form integral components of this field.
Historical and Practical Theology explores the historical forms and contents of church life in relation to changing social structures across different periods. The specialization includes the study of ecclesiological and liturgical issues from both historical and contemporary perspectives, with particular attention to the dynamic interplay between theological theory and religious practice in church and society.
