Operating from the standpoint that mobility is essentially a subjective human experience, BEAT (Building Equitable Accessibility Together) aims to investigate urban mobility barriers as they unfold in the daily activities of people. Rather than examining a specific mode of mobility (e.g., public transport, walking) or a single accessibility barrier, the focus of this project is the holistic experience of urban mobility in the daily lives of individuals with physical and cognitive diversities. The point of departure is “people”—their routines and travel behaviours, their daily frustrations with various mobility obstacles, and the impact of these hindrances on their personal, social, and professional lives. BEAT investigates a wide range of barriers that may be labelled as temporary or even mundane. Examples of such temporary-but-everyday barriers include construction sites and road works planned by municipalities, but also a variety of unplanned situations, such as improperly parked delivery vehicles, poorly placed planters and bikes on the sidewalk, unauthorised market stalls, and so forth. While each of these situations may be perceived as a temporary problem, collectively they form a permanent reality of how we experience our cities. These barriers signify an “informal” layer of inaccessibility superimposed on more structural or “formal” accessibility problems in the city.

Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) are a core infrastructure in computing education and professional software development. Simultaneously, generative AI tools such as large language models are increasingly embedded in programming workflows, shaping how code is written, debugged, and learned. While these tools have the potential to support programmers meaningfully, they also risk reinforcing exclusion if accessibility, cognition, and power relations are treated as secondary concerns.
This PhD project focuses on the design, implementation, and evaluation of human-centred, AI-powered programming environments. It investigates how IDEs and generative AI tools can be technically redesigned to better support diverse cognitive styles and learning practices, with a particular focus on (self-identified) neurodiverse women in computing. The project is grounded in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), software engineering, and applied AI, combining building systems with participatory and qualitative research methods.

PhD position summary/title: PhD on Continuous Optical Clocks
Optical clocks have reached a precision of better than 10-18, which enables them to resolve the relativistic time dilation by only 1cm height difference in the gravitational field of earth. They are useful for searches of physics beyond the standard model, exploration of many-body physics, and societal applications, such as navigation. So far, clocks operate in a pulsed manner, preparing a sample of ultracold atoms and then interrogating that sample. Reaching the ultimate precision needs averaging of 10 thousand samples, taking several hours.
You will join a team building clocks that will overcome this limitation, effectively interrogating the atomic sample continuously. This enables reaching the ultimate precision already after just a few minutes, which is useful for many applications. We want to achieve this by creating clocks that can operate truly continuously, using technology that we have developed to achieve continuous Bose-Einstein condensation [Nature 606, 683 (2022)]. We are building two types of such clocks: a superradiant clock and a zero-deadtime clock. A superradiant clock is a laser that lases on an ultranarrow optical transition. You can read about our plans for this clock in Sheng Zhou’s PhD thesis. For the zero-deadtime clock, we supply atoms from a continuous ultracold Sr source to four clock interrogation zones that are in one vacuum chamber. Clock interrogation can always be executed in at least one zone, while others are reloaded with atoms, enabling continuous operation. With this PhD position you can contribute to both efforts.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position on metasurface optics for ultracold atoms
Metasurfaces are new nanostructured, ultra-thin optics used to manipulate light with sub-wavelength precision. They can implement functions that are difficult or impractical with conventional lenses and mirrors, and are now used across many areas of optics and photonics. A particularly promising application for these capabilities is the control of ultracold atoms. These atoms, cooled to near absolute zero, are among the cleanest and most controllable quantum systems we have. By arranging these in optical “tweezer” arrays (tiny traps made from laser light), researchers can build programmable quantum matter for quantum simulation, precision measurements, and for exploring new few- and many-body physics. A central challenge is to not only make more traps but to create richer functionality in these landscapes of light.
In this PhD project, you will investigate, develop and explore new functionalities of metasurfaces that go beyond those of the standard approaches for ultracold atoms (such as spatial light modulators). The goal is to realize new forms of control over ultracold-atom arrays by combining multiple optical functionalities into a single, intrinsically stable element, enabling access to novel trapping and control regimes. What new quantum control becomes possible, what limits arise, and what phenomena can be accessed?
