PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in Functional Community Ecology / Meta-Ecosystems
Biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation are increasingly shaped by interactions across ecosystem boundaries, yet the mechanisms linking terrestrial and aquatic communities remain poorly understood. This doctoral position is part of the TRACE – Trait Responses Across Connected Ecosystems project (2025–2028), funded by the Research Council of Finland.
The TRACE project has a broad focus on understanding connectivity between forest and lake ecosystems using functional traits, with particular emphasis on trait dimensions related to tolerance, movement, and interaction. By integrating multi-taxa field data, trait-based ecology, experiments, and advanced statistical analyses, TRACE aims to uncover how ecological processes propagate across blue–green boundaries and shape biodiversity patterns at local to regional scales.
The doctoral researcher is expected to actively contribute to field campaigns, experiments, shared data collection, data analysis, and manuscript preparation, and to work as an integrated member of a collaborative research team. Within this general project framework, the PhD project offers some flexibility to jointly define the specific research focus according to the candidate’s scientific interests, provided that the topic remains fully embedded within the objectives and work packages of the TRACE project.

(02) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in Macroevolution and Phenotypic Diversification of Dung Beetles
The PhD project will aim to uncover the macroevolutionary mechanisms driving dung beetle phenotypic diversification. The PhD candidate will investigate how dung beetle phenomes evolved during adaptive radiations by integrating phylogenomic and phenotypic data, high-dimensional phenotypic datasets, and advanced evolutionary models. A central focus will be on testing how major environmental transitions—such as the K–Pg extinction and the Late Miocene grassland expansion—reshaped dung availability and triggered shifts in phenotypic evolutionary rates.
The appointee will be encouraged to undertake short research visits to collaborators in the USA and Australia and will participate in the supervision of undergraduate students. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated candidate to conduct cutting-edge research on insect evolution, morphology, comparative phylogenetics and natural history collections.
The successful candidate will work closely with the project’s Principal Investigator and international collaborators. The appointee will take primary responsibility for conducting research, performing data analyses, preparing manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and presenting results at international conferences. In addition, there will be opportunities to contribute to science communication activities, including participation in the development of a popular science book for children about dung beetles, mammals, and dinosaurs.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in Geological Hydrogen Reservoirs
The HydRes project is a multidisciplinary collaboration between the University of Helsinki and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, aiming to advance the understanding and sustainable utilization of geological hydrogen reservoirs in crystalline bedrock. Hydrogen is a key enabler of the green transition, and geological hydrogen has the potential to provide a renewable, emission-free energy source for sectors that are challenging to electrify. HydRes will address questions related to the formation, exploration, renewability, and exploitation of geological hydrogen reservoirs, combining geochemistry, microbiology, isotope analysis, and modelling.
The doctoral researcher will focus on the geological hydrogen aspects of the project by integrating microbiological and geochemical data to develop diagnostic tools for assessing hydrogen potential and sustainability of geological hydrogen production. The position offers a unique opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary team, develop expertise in isotope geochemistry, hydrogeochemistry, and geomicrobiology, and contribute to the emerging topic of the role of geological hydrogen in the hydrogen economy.
The doctoral researcher will join the Sustainable Earth Resources Research Group at the Department of Geosciences and Geography, University of Helsinki, and benefit from state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, and collaborations with leading national and international experts. The position includes participation in field sampling campaigns at deep drill hole sites, as well as research visits and opportunities for professional development and networking.
