PhD position summary/title: Doctoral position (m/f/d) on Tree-water-relations
In ECOSENSE we explore new ways to quantify ecosystem processes and stress impact of climate change by developing novel sensor principles and measurement methods (https://uni-freiburg.de/ecosense/). We established a comprehensive infrastructure and sensor network in a nearby forest including three canopy access towers.
For our second phase starting this July we are seeking 15 doctoral researchers from environmental and engineering sciences. ECOSENSE offers highly interdisciplinary research and training in a cooperative and vivid working environment.
In project B3 (Sensing water potentials from leaf to stand scale) we will investigate continuous water potential dynamics and plant water fluxes across the soil–plant–atmosphere continuum to identify hot spots and moments of water stress in the ECOSENSE Forest. Our project partners will develop and apply novel, minimally invasive sensor solutions for distributed measurements complemented by scalable proxies for water potential tracking at the stand scale.
The doctoral researcher will be part of the Chair of Ecosystem Physiology, which is a dynamic and vivid team, strongly involved in ECOSENSE. The group is well-connected nationally and internationally, as well as within the University of Freiburg and Faculty of Natural Resources and Environment.

The successful candidates will drive independent research projects supported by the prestigious

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral position (m/f/d) on Microfluidic on-site qPCR for RNA analysis of trees

Project B4 develops microfluidic systems for on-site qPCR to quantify tree and phyllosphere gene expression, aiming to identify stress-responsive markers in adult forest trees. The Laboratory for MEMS Applications specializes in the design, integration, and experimental validation of microfluidic cartridges for automated nucleic acid analysis. In close collaboration with the Chair of Forest Genetics, we develop technologies that translate complex molecular diagnostics into robust, field-capable sensor systems for the ECOSENSE forest infrastructure.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher (m/f/d) Position in Forest Ecohydrology
In ECOSENSE we explore new ways to quantify ecosystem processes and stress impact of climate change by developing novel sensor principles and measurement methods (https://uni-freiburg.de/ecosense/). We established a comprehensive infrastructure and sensor network in a nearby forest. For our second phase starting this July we are seeking 15 doctoral researchers from environmental and engineering sciences. ECOSENSE offers highly interdisciplinary research and training in a cooperative and vivid working environment.
In project A2.1 (Linking fluxes of water and nutrients from trees to the soil and watershed using MRI and different sensor systems) we will trace water fluxes and sharpen our picture of biotic controls and find patterns that allow us to scale up water fluxes to larger areas including entire watersheds. Particularly focus will be moments of stress, such as droughts, heatwaves or late frost, and their impact on the ecohydrological fluxes in the heterogeneous forest ecosystem. We will develop and apply a unique ecohydrological sensor network capable of capturing the high spatio-temporal variability of water fluxes across diverse forest ecosystems. By combining point-based, integrated, continuous, and novel rover-based measurement approaches (CRNS), the goal is to identify an optimal and efficient sensor setup that provides maximum insight into tree–soil water interactions with minimal redundancy

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral position (m/f/d) on endoscopic optical tomography with extended tissue penetration
µBIG is a young and dynamic research group at the Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK). We develop innovative microsystems for manipulating light in unprecedented ways and build groundbreaking biomedical sensing and imaging tools based on them.
Zee-Zoom-Zap is an ERC-Synergy project on a new theranostic approach to pancreatic cancer. It combines early detection (zee), non-invasive biopsy (zoom), and local therapy (zap), all through optical means. A radical departure from conventional optical biopsy concepts, our project has a holistic approach founded on four closely interlinked research pillars: cancer-specific phototheranostic probes, monolithically 3D-printed micro-optical catheters, novel optical imaging and therapy methods with unprecedented range and sensitivity, and novel physics-enhanced deep learning AI models for imaging, detection, decision support, and treatment guidance. The long-term perspective for the Zee-Zoom-Zap is translation into the clinical setting as part of a combined population- and imaging-based screening workflow for early detection of pancreatic cancer and in situ treatment.

(06) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher (m/fd) in Modern History
The doctoral researcher will focus on the work package “Heroes and Villains of Blockade”. The work package will investigate the immense public fascination with blockade-runners (submarine crews, smugglers) and their successors: airlifters. The PhD assigned to this task will examine the media coverage, popular fiction and public celebrations devoted to blockade-runners in blockaded societies (e.g. also including neutral countries like Sweden) during and after the world wars, including, possibly, also the Berlin airlift. The work package will analyse the major public fascination with these ‘heroes’ and determine under what circumstances and to what extent the heroization of blockade runners (and the vilification of blockaders) helped forge social consensus and could offset the disintegrative societal impact of blockade across and within beleaguered societies. The personal papers of blockade-runners/airlifters, a wide array of printed material and material objects (awards, devotional material) would form the source basis for this work package.

In the framework of the DFG-funded Research Training Group (RTG) “BioBuild – Bio-inspired Materials and Systems for Responsive Building Components”, we offer a PhD position (E 13 TV-L, 65%) with a duration of four years, as soon as possible.
The research focuses on development of bio-inspired hygromorphic actuators able to move according to heat and humidity. The PhD researcher will develop new crosslinked hygromorphic materials able to be recycled at the end of its life time. The work will include polymer synthesis and characterization as well as actuator fabrication. The work will have a strong collaborative aspect with close exchanges with other PhDs working locally in the lab as well as the inclusion into a larger scale collaborative framework.
