PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate on the Political Economy of Housing and Health (Qualitative)

This PhD-project will specifically focus on in-depth ethnographic analyses of how key housing actors take health into consideration in their practices, if at all. The fieldwork will take place in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Specifically, the project seeks to understand how health considerations influence decision-making, policy formation and, ultimately, the functioning of housing systems. The project moves beyond the typical focus on residents’ housing experiences, to focus on key stakeholders. These include policymakers, real-estate developers, housing-association employees, and resident groups. It focuses on these actors’ interests, class positions, and housing ideologies.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate on the Role of Housing in Inequalities Across Societies (Macro-Level)

Two PhD positions are being offered as part of the project: ‘HOU-EQUAL: How housing reshapes inequalities across societies.’ HOU-EQUAL takes on a ‘big-picture’ assessment of the role of housing in inequality across societies. Paramount to wealth, wellbeing, security, and life-course transitions, housing is central to structuring inequalities. Its role, however, varies drastically, from an equalizing force to chief driver of inequality. This is dependent on the housing system: the institutional, political, economic, and cultural context shaping housing provision and consumption. HOU-EQUAL confronts how housing systems mitigate or amplify socio-economic inequalities through the distribution of housing (dis)advantages. This interdisciplinary, comparative project examines macro-level dynamics across a wide range of national/urban contexts alongside micro-level outcomes within five contrasting cases (Netherlands, Finland, Ireland, Spain, Japan).

We are looking for a motivated and curious PhD researcher to join the CINPHIA (Co-creation and Integration of Planetary Health Impact Assessment) consortium. You will conduct research at the heart of one of today’s most pressing governance challenges: how can the Netherlands build regulatory and transformational policies capable of integrating planetary health across fragmented policy domains and government levels?

Working under the supervision of Prof. dr. Anniek de Ruijter and Dr. Katrina Perehudoff (UvA, Law) and Prof. dr. Robbert Biesbroek and Dr. Marleen Bekker (WUR, Public Administration and Policy & Health and Society), you will be embedded in an interdisciplinary consortium of legal scholars, policy scientists, public health researchers, and societal partners, including the Province of North Holland and the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Researcher in Legal and ethical governance of AI in healthcare

Project 1: Generative AI is rapidly transforming healthcare, particularly through the emergence of multi-agent systems that support clinical decision-making, patient interaction, and care delivery. While these technologies offer major opportunities, they also raise critical socio-ethical, legal, and regulatory challenges.

This PhD position is embedded in a European research project aimed at developing responsible, trustworthy, and compliant multi-agent generative AI systems for healthcare. The successful candidate will contribute to defining ethics-by-design and compliance-by-design frameworks that guide the development and deployment of such systems.

Project 2: Artificial intelligence and genomic technologies are transforming healthcare, offering powerful tools for diagnosis and treatment. Yet, these innovations often fail to serve diverse populations fairly, which can reinforce existing inequalities.

This PhD project would focus on building a multidimensional conception of fairness in medical AI, informed by input gathered from relevant stakeholders, through focus group studies and Delphi studies. The PhD project is within the NWO-VIDI project Fairness in Data-Driven Medical Technologies: Solidifying Regulatory Oversight Based on a Multidimensional Conception of Fairness.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Cloud-Native and AI-Native 6G Networks

Software-defined and programmable networking is a key enabling technology for cloud-native and AI-native 6G networks, supporting greater scalability, flexibility, automation, and efficient resource utilization. Cross-layer and cross-domain programmability, across the control and data planes and from RAN to core, is expected to be a defining characteristic of 6G systems, which are currently being developed and standardized. In this context, data plane programming capabilities in next-generation mobile networks can bring significant benefits with regards to network slicing and multi-tenancy, dynamic traffic engineering, offloading network functions to hardware accelerators, etc.

Specifically, this PhD project, conducted in collaboration with Ericsson, the leading mobile communications equipment manufacturer,  will investigate data-plane programmability in next-generation mobile networks, with a particular focus on cloud-native and AI-native Radio Access Networks (RAN). The candidate will investigate research challenges including, but not limited to, the specification and implementation of common abstraction layers for heterogeneous programmable data planes, mechanisms for data-plane multitenancy and modularization, and programmable  radio resource management, with an emphasis on intelligent and adaptive control.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position: Multifunctional mechano-optical metasurfaces

Are you a highly motivated physicist with a strong interest in merging photonics and mechanics? We are seeking an excellent and ambitious PhD candidate to carry out interdisciplinary research on mechano-optical metasurfaces.

A long-standing challenge for both fundamental and applied sciences is to devise new tools to actively manipulate physical signals – such as light, sound, or motion. During the past 20 years, metamaterials have become a particularly fruitful paradigm to control light or motion in unprecedented ways. By patterning materials at a length scale much smaller than the typical interaction length in the material, metamaterials can be designed that have man-made properties that cannot be found in nature. For instance, optical metasurfaces can now redirect and pattern light beams with nm-thick layers, and mechanical metamaterials can exhibit extreme and programmable shape-changes. Yet, despite these impressive advances, metamaterials research has so far been focused on restricted sets of properties: metamaterials allow the control of either light or motion, yet rarely simultaneously.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Leadership and Management: Leader Information Regulation

In this PhD project, we examine how leaders influence follower outcomes through the way they regulate information. While transparency is widely seen as beneficial, too much or poorly timed openness can create confusion, overload, and reduced credibility. At the same time, silence is not neutral: when leaders withhold information, followers actively interpret the absence of communication, often increasing uncertainty and speculation.

We bring these perspectives together in a unified framework of leader information regulation, ranging from silence to transparency. Central to this project is the concept of calibrated transparency: the ability of leaders to adapt the timing, amount, and framing of communication to what followers need in a given situation.

We will investigate when transparency helps or hurts, when silence becomes a meaningful signal, and how leaders can best calibrate their communication to support trust, psychological safety, and performance. Using diverse (quantitative) methods, we will study both the mechanisms and boundary conditions of these effects.
