PhD position summary/title: Doctoral position at Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering at Aalto University, in Espoo, Finland. DC12: Design, fabrication, and characterization of reconfigurable and time-varying optical metasurfaces
- To design optical metasurfaces capable of complex reconfigurable functionalities while restricting control to a single, or otherwise limited, discrete set of tuning parameters, enabling practical global actuation and robust device operation.
- To design optical metasurfaces and material platforms exhibiting time-varying responses. Using adjoint-based optimization and spatial structuring, to realize complex time-modulated medium dynamics with realistic material constraints and experimentally feasible excitation and driving schemes.
- To fabricate and experimentally characterize the designed prototypes, and to validate their reconfigurable and time-varying performance through quantitative comparison with analytical modeling and full-wave simulation results.
This position is part of the MetaTune Doctoral Network “Reconfigurability using inversely designed metasurfaces”, which has been funded under the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) program.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher for the Finnish Design Push initiative (2-year funded position)
The Department of Design is looking for a doctoral researcher for the Finnish Design Push initiative to take part in our on-going research on industry engagements in design education and its role and functioning in furthering developments within technology industries, and especially small- and medium-sized companies. The Finnish Design Push is a joint research and development initiative on education – formed in partnership between the School of Arts, Design and Architecture and the Technology Industries of Finland to support the work-life transition of design students and further the employment of design within Finnish industry (Finnish Design Push | Aalto University).
In searching for a doctoral researcher to join us in the coming months, we are looking for an individual that shares our research interests in the intersection between design education and design integration and who has the capacity to pursue doctoral studies. The duration of doctoral studies is estimated to four years at Aalto School of Arts, Design and Architecture and a suitable applicant is expected to prepare a research plan and get accepted to the doctoral programme of the school during the six-month probation period for the position. (03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Doctoral position at Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering at Aalto University, in Espoo, Finland. DC2: Sub-terahertz and terahertz reconfigurable intelligent surfaces
- To establish an analytical modeling approach for multilayer tunable metasurfaces that captures the key electromagnetic coupling effects between layers and enables fast prediction of their tunable response without relying solely on full-wave simulations.
- To create efficient adjoint-based optimization methods for tunable metasurfaces that provide rapid sensitivity/gradient evaluation, support high-dimensional design spaces, and allow systematic optimization of performance targets such as efficiency, bandwidth, and multi-condition operation.
- To design and fabricate reconfigurable metasurface prototypes that implement a global tuning mechanism, and to experimentally characterize their electromagnetic performance. To validate the achieved tuning range and functional performance in laboratory measurements against modeling and simulation results.
