PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Position (Dr. med. vet. programme) Institute of Veterinary Anatomy, Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Zurich 100 %
The Group of Reproductive Biology of the Institute of Veterinary Anatomy, Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Zurich www.vetanat.uzh.ch is looking for a candidate for a doctoral position in the field of comparative reproductive endocrinology.
Highly motivated graduate students with vet-med degree, interested in reproductive endocrinology, are welcomed to apply for this position.
The SNSF (Swiss National Science Foundation)-funded project investigates the molecular mechanisms of hypoxia and HIF1α signaling in steroidogenic cells, with a focus on granulosa and Leydig cells.
Steroidogenesis is a tightly regulated process essential for reproductive function, and its dysregulation contributes to a range of clinical conditions affecting gonad activity. Hypoxia and HIF1α-mediated pathways have recently emerged as integral components of the signaling networks regulating steroid hormone production. Novel regulatory mechanisms described in our research group emphasize the need for further investigations into the complex role of hypoxic signaling in the steroidogenic process (for more details see: https://drive.switch.ch/index.php/s/kchZFSdzPhqHX1g).
The acquired knowledge could potentially refine current models of physiological steroidogenesis and identify molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of steroid hormone-related clinical/pathological conditions.
The opportunity to perform doctoral/PhD work, training in molecular- and cell-biology methods, dedicated international team and support of experienced young scientists, pleasant working environment in Zurich.

PhD position summary/title: PhD in Network Science: Modeling of Animal Networks 80 %
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our Quantitative Network Science research group at the Department of Mathematical Modeling and Machine Learning at the University of Zurich.
Wild populations are increasingly exposed to demographic decline and fragmentation, making inbreeding and its consequences a central problem in evolutionary biology and conservation. We address this using one of the most comprehensive datasets available for any vertebrate population: a long-term field study in Switzerland of more than 20,000 wild mice that vary naturally in degree of inbreeding. This project investigates inbreeding avoidance in wild house mice using a novel multilayer temporal network modeling framework that integrates behavioral, genetic, and social co-nesting data, and aims to develop new statistical and computational tools applicable well beyond the study system. The PhD project is embedded in a collaborative framework with network scientists and evolutionary biologists at the University of Zurich and at Columbia University.
You will be embedded in an active and collaborative research group with access to a unique long-term dataset and outstanding scientific support. You will benefit from close collaboration with leading groups in biology, network science and genomics. We are committed to fostering an inclusive and respectful working environment.

The chair of Individual Differences and Assessment (headed by Prof. Dr. Wiebke Bleidorn) focuses on measuring, explaining, and predicting the structures and processes of personality that underlie human experience and behavior. As part of a research project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (PI: Dr. Michael Krämer; duration: 4 years), we will investigate solitude as a psychological experience. In several subprojects, we will analyze relationships between solitude and personal and contextual factors to develop an integrative theory of the circumstances under which people experience solitude as positive or negative. A central goal is to gain a better understanding of the regulatory processes underlying the desire for solitude and solitude behavior. To this end, we will collect ambulatory assessment data and integrate existing data sets.

PhD position summary/title: One Doctoral Position embedded in an SNF-Project 80 %
Candidates should ideally come with a background in law, health policy and/or in the social sciences (Master’s degree), but with a particular interest in policymaking in health. Also profiles in neighbouring disciplines (e.g. Science and Technology Studies, Public Health) may be considered, as long as you demonstrate your interest in this specific topic and in the interdisciplinary research approach of this position. The willingness to pursue a PhD in law (or Biomedical Ethics and Law) is essential.
Ideally, applicants already have some experience with either legal analysis (reading and understanding legal and policy sources, systematising their content etc.) and/or empirical work (especially conducting interviews).
Although the research team is international, and the outputs of research can be in English, the knowledge of an official language of Switzerland (German, French or Italian) is highly desirable, since the doctoral researcher’s work (both policy and empirical) should consider especially the Swiss context.
Other important skills are the capacity to work in a team, to organise your own work, and to possess an interest in scientific writing. The workplace of the PhD candidate will be in Zurich, but there is flexibility in terms of organising the presence at the office.
