PhD position summary/title: Postdoc position in Quantum Chemistry
We invite applications for a postdoctoral position to develop quantum algorithms to study electron dynamics in photochemistry and spectroscopy. This research is part of our long-term collaboration with the QuSoft Research Center, where we focus on the development of novel quantum algorithms for chemical applications. In this project you will work on simulating strong perturbations of initially relatively simple electronic wave functions using quantum algorithms. The methods to be developed concern multi-state molecular dynamics and real-time electron dynamics. Proof-of-principle applications will focus on use cases in photochemistry and catalysis. The project combines theoretical work, algorithm development, and implementation into a hybrid (in terms of targeted computers) quantum-classical software. It offers an opportunity to contribute to fundamental advances in quantum chemistry.
The successful candidate will join our quantum chemistry group at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. For an overview of our current group and our research interests please check out our group page. We are an interdisciplinary and international group of chemists and physicists working on the development of novel methods in electronic structure theory and their application to molecules and periodic systems. PhD position summary/title: PhD: The Art of Dying in Islamic Traditions (600-1800)
The School of Religion and Theology in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam seeks to hire a Ph.D. student. The position is part of the NWO-funded Vidi-project The Art of Dying in Islamic Traditions (600-1800). This five-year project (July ’26- June ‘31) led by dr. Pieter Coppens, investigates how Muslims have historically envisioned the good death, which bodily, sensory, and emotional norms were at play, and which legal and ethical concerns they had. It seeks to show when and how these norms and concerns have changed throughout the centuries among religious exemplary figures, rulers, and common people.
This PhD position specifically focuses on the death of rulers. It collects and analyzes deathbed stories of Caliphs, Sultans, kings, governors and the aristocracy of Islamic societies. It identifies major changes throughout the centuries in the distinct ethic and praxis of dying of these rulers, based on for example biographical dictionaries, chronicles, mirrors for princes, works of etiquette (adab), and court poetry.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Economic Assessment of Coral Reefs and Coastal Ecosystems
The Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) has a new position for a PhD student in the field of environmental economics. As PhD student you will become part of the new interdisciplinary Horizon Europe project ‘Management of Coastal Networks Nurtured through Ecosystem assessment, Collaboration and Technology’ (m-CONNECT). It focuses on interconnected coastal seascapes (CMS-metasystems), i.e. coral reefs, mangroves and seagrasses, and their role in supporting ecosystem services and climate resilience. The project aims to better understand how different forms of ecological connectivity influence services like fisheries, coastal protection and carbon storage. Working with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, the project will develop science-based, locally informed guidelines for conserving and restoring these systems across islands in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific.

Are you passionate about the Earth and its climate? Do you want to make a difference in science and the world? Do you get excited about satellite images and venturing out to remote places?
This vacancy is part of a larger Vici project funded by the Dutch Research Council. FireSky is an interdisciplinary project combining field, remote sensing and modeling approaches to study feedbacks between climate warming, lightning and fires and permafrost thaw in the northern high latitudes. There is also a focus on climate-informed fire management strategies. The project includes funding for several field campaigns in Alaska (USA) and Canada. Project partners of FireSky include among others University of East Anglia, Woodwell Climate Research Center and the Alaska Fire Science Consortium, and research visits to these institutes are budgeted in the project.

In 1990, the university adopted the mythical griffin as its common emblem.
