(01) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD on Hydrological model-data interaction and machine learning for headwater catchment analyses

This project will advance multi-fidelity modelling approaches tailored to headwater systems and deliver new insights into groundwater-surface water interactions. A key challenge for hydrological headwater catchment analyses lies in characterizing and predicting their hydrological functioning, and this is fundamentally related to the fact that the majority of them are unmonitored and their hydraulic parameters unknown. The objective of this PhD project is bridge this gap and develop data-driven, machine learning-based approaches to identify the governing hydraulic parameters of headwater catchments, hind- and forecast their stream and groundwater outflows, and to understand their susceptibility to extreme hydrometeorological conditions based on storyline approaches.

PhD position summary/title: PhD students in VACCINATION-INDUCED B CELL IMMUNITY AGAINST LASSA VIRUS

The successful applicants will investigate:

  • how protective memory B cell immunity can be elicited by genetic vaccine technology, and
  • how memory B cell immunity mediates protection against high-level viremia

The project will exploit a broad range of cutting-edge immunological and virological methods including innovative molecular vaccine design, B cell repertoire analyses (single cell cloning and next-generation single-cell sequencing) and somatic gene therapy-based perturbation experiments in mice.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD for local sensing of collective spin phases

The Quantum Opto-Electronics Group (QOEG; https://smolenski-lab.com), led by Prof. Dr. Tomasz Smoleński at the Department of Physics, University of Base, in collaboration with the group of Prof. Martino Poggio, is searching for a new PhD studentto develop a platform for local sensing of collective spin phases in SMMs by integrating optical spectroscopy with SQUID-on-tip (SOT) magnetometry. Our hybrid approach will uniquely combine the dynamical control offered by optical experiments with excellent spatial resolution provided by SOT, enabling simultaneous application of both techniques on a single device. Beyond fundamental impact, our studies will have far-reaching implications for emerging nanotechnologies.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student in Forecasting Resistance Spread and Epidemiological Impact (100%)

  • Drive your own PhD project on developing mechanistic/process-based, spatially explicit models of insecticide resistance spread and impact, using Bayesian statistics, mathematical modelling, machine learning, and quantitative genetics
  • Implement resistance-spread models using state-of-the-art programming practices with version control; calibrate them to available data; integrate them with our epidemiological simulation platform; and evaluate resistance-management strategies to maintain insecticide effectiveness
  • Collaborate closely with project partners, including statisticians, machine-learning researchers, entomologists, and disease modellers at Oxford University, Imperial College London, Wageningen University & Research, Università della Svizzera italiana, and Swiss TPH
  • Communicate your research through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, workshops, and regular meetings with collaborators

(05) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Position at the Center for Cognitive and Decision Sciences

Candidates should be interested in studying how individuals and society evaluate novel technologies and manage associated risks. The doctoral project will focus on risk and benefit perceptions, public discourse, and science communication around existing and emerging technologies (e.g., genetic modification, nuclear power, artificial intelligence).

The project will involve analyzing public and media discourse as key components of democratic decision-making, identifying how different audiences mentally represent risks and benefits, and testing which communication formats are most effective for informing diverse publics. Approaches will include cognitive science and computational social science methods, such as natural language processing and network science, as well as large-scale surveys and behavioral experiments.
