PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Project Management
We have a vacancy for a PhD candidate at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering in Project Management at the Project and Quality Management (PKL) Research Group. The focus of the research will be on project complexity.
Managing a project to a successful outcome is demanding and requires that managers and organizations establish structures, guidelines, incentives, execution models, and contracts that foster the collaboration. One of the most important factors that influence these choices are the complexity of the actual project. Project complexity has been studied for many years; however, there is a need to better understand from both a practitioner’s and an academic’s standpoint how different factors contribute to the complexity and how it best can be managed.
Your PhD will investigate how project managers and project organizations today evaluate the complexity of their projects, what actions/decisions they take to mitigate the complexity, and to what extent their efforts have had the desired effects on managing the complexity and the project outcome. Your contribution will, in other words, form a basis for future knowledge development on how to manage project complexity. The research should lead to a model/method/tool that can be applied by project practitioners.
As a part of your position, you will join a research group and an extended research environment at NTNU that is internationally recognized for our research and knowledge development within project management and project governance. You will be a part of a group of several other PhD candidates. The position requires you to live in Trondheim, as your contribution to and your contact with the joint research environment are important for your work.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Multi-scale Modelling and Simulation of Polymer and Antiferromagnet Composites
For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.
We have an open PhD position in multi-scale modeling and simulations of polymer and antiferromagnet (AFM) composites for spintronics at the Department of Manufacturing and Civil Engineering, NTNU.
Spintronics, which manipulates the magnetization of AFMs, offers ultrafast THz spin dynamics and picosecond switching speeds. The absence of stray magnetic fields in AFMs allows for higher bit densities and increased storage capacities, making them ideal for next-generation memory devices. AFMs are also energy-efficient, reducing power consumption while maintaining high processing speeds, which is advantageous for chip design. AFM-based components like interconnects, oscillators, transistors, and logic gates promise improved performance in integrated circuits using electron spin without creating disruptive magnetic fields.
This PhD project will focus on the integration of polymers with AFM materials using a multi-scale modeling framework to explore new possibilities in spintronic applications.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Model Predictive Control for Energy Optimization in Cooling and Ventilation systems
Through a collaboration agreement between CERN and NorCC (Norwegian Centre for CERN-related Research), this position is one of a number of jointly-funded NTNU-CERN PhD vacancies in the field of the technological sciences (engineering projects). The successful candidate will spend 18 months at NTNU and 18 months at CERN, while remaining active in the PhD Programme at both institutions for the full 36 months. For the position of PhD Candidate, the goal is the completion of doctoral education at NTNU and CERN, including an obtained doctoral degree from NTNU.
A jointly-funded NTNU-CERN PhD vacancy is available at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics at NTNU on the topic of Model Predictive Control for Energy Optimization in Cooling and Ventilation Systems.
There has been considerable effort recently to reduce energy consumption at CERN, which currently stands at roughly 1.3 TWh per year. One attractive means to achieve this, which typically also requires minimal capital expenditure, is to improve control algorithms. At CERN, cooling and ventilation applications account for a considerable proportion of electrical consumption (in the order of 100 GWh per year). Improving control systems for these applications could therefore enable considerable energy savings. A recent pilot implementation of Model Predictive Control (MPC) on an Air Handling Unit (AHU) at CERN has demonstrated promising results with respect to energy savings. The focus of this project will be to investigate how MPC may be efficiently implemented for large numbers of similar installations.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Application of machine learning for crystal and continuum plasticity
a
This academic position will provide the opportunity for the candidate to complete a doctoral education program and obtain a PhD from NTNU, while undertaking professional development activities within the broad fields of research and materials science.
Crystal plasticity plays a critical role for understanding and predicting both the global and local behavior of materials under various loading conditions, especially in metals and alloys. Phenomena such as a corner effect, non-normality of the plastic flow, flow localization, are particularly suited for being studied within the crystal plasticity framework. In a hierarchical multiscale modelling paradigm, the crystal plasticity, as a computational method, stretches itself broadly along the microscale, neighbouring from the bottom with the dislocation and molecular dynamics, and is very closely linked to the upper scale of the continuum plasticity. Here, plastic anisotropy evolution associated with the texture evolution are essential for improving forming simulations. Given the recent improvements, both in computational power and in the effectiveness of the numerical methods, it increasingly becomes viable to simulate the large plastic deformations of small and medium sized components, made of single or multi-materials, directly by using the crystal plasticity methods.
Machine learning techniques, especially recurrent neural networks, are among the current research activities, used for representing the constitutive equations and calibration of advanced anisotropic continuum plasticity models based on data generated by the crystal plasticity. This project aims at making an advancement within the field of crystal and continuum plasticity strongly supported by the relevant machine learning methods.
You will report to Associate Professor Tomáš Mánik. The PhD position is funded by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in use of artificial intelligence (AI) within the ship design process
The KSP DREAMS (KSP: Kompetanse- og Samarbeidsprosjekt; DREAMS: Design Re-Engineering and Automation of Marine Systems) research project aims to increase the competitiveness of Norwegian ship design activities. The project rests on the following three hypotheses:
- By re-engineering the design process, combined with a higher degree of automation of selected tasks, we can reduce the total resource expenditure in conceptual and basic design by at least 20%.
- By extending the focus from predominantly technical details towards commercial and sustainability performance we can better meet customer needs and expectations, and thereby significantly improve the competitiveness of Norwegian ship design firms.
- By disseminating the project results into naval architecture educational training programs, we can improve the medium- and long-term implementation and use of new design methods and technologies in the Norwegian maritime industry.
This PhD position shall help addressing hypothesis 1 and 2 in particular by investing the use of artificial intelligence tools (AI) in the ship design process. The aim is to streamline resource-intensive design activities and thereby improve the overall design process. Potential activities to be investigated are:
- Gathering and preparing relevant market and operational data via specialized “agents” (combination of AI agents which each are specialized on narrow tasks). This is relevant for early-phase “business development” and hence crucial in projects where ship designers develop new, innovative solutions with a customer.
- Verification and generation of ship concept specifications, which are a central delivery in tender processes.
- Automizing resource-intensive basic design activities (e.g., generation of stability books).
- Designing retrofits/aftermarket activities are becoming increasingly important for Norwegian ship designers, particularly in light of meeting future emission requirements. AI-based analysis of existing vessels (based on detailed operational data where available, otherwise AIS data) may significantly improve a designer’s competitiveness and shall be explored.
To ensure that the research starts from state-of-the-art design activities and the challenges thereof, the candidate is encouraged to work alongside with the projects industry partners (Ulstein International, DNV, Pon Power) for extended periods of time..)
