PhD position summary/title: PhD / post-doc (open rank)

The successful candidate will be assigned the subproject Justice and Skepticism: Cicero’s Roman Theory of Justice and the Carneadean Debate, which is linked to inflection point (i) and designed to examine Cicero’s notion of justice as elaborated in the Republic, the Laws and On Duties, as well as in some of his speeches. Research topics that shall be addressed include an accurate determination of the ways in which Cicero’s conception of justice differs from, and may be at odds with, the ones of his Greek predecessors; an account of the conspicuous legal, rather than ethical, nature that Ciceronian justice displays; and an assessment of the extent to which Cicero’s views on what constitutes a just commonwealth were shaped by his experience of the breakdown of political order during the ongoing crisis of the late Roman republic. At the end of the appointment, the successful candidate shall publish his research findings as a monograph, which may be submitted as a doctoral or postdoctoral thesis; in addition, she or he is expected to publish at least one peer-reviewed project-related journal article per year in a major international journal; further responsibilities involve the participation in the regular meetings of the research team as well as the attendance of research-related conferences in Zurich and abroad.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position – Spatiotemporal drivers of metastasis

The group studies bone sarcoma and in particular Ewing sarcoma, the second most frequent bone tumor of childhood and adolescence. This cancer is characterized by a pathognomonic chromosomal translocation and few additional recurrent mutations. Among those, we identified STAG2 mutation as the most frequent one and highlighted its association with poor prognosis (Tirode et al., 2014, Cancer Discov). We recently showed how STAG2 mutation alters the generation of chromatin loops and conducts to increased invasive/metastatic properties of these mutated Ewing sarcoma cells (Surdez et al. 2021, Cancer Cell) and how STAG2 mutation favors the transformation of mesenchymal stem cells into Ewing sarcoma (Sole et al. 2021, Cancer Res).

PhD position summary/title: Open PhD position

Accurate movement control is the result of a complex interplay between various muscle groups whose activity is controlled by different areas of the central nervous system (CNS). Besides the corticospinal system, the phylogenetically old reticulospinal system is a key motor system controlling different elementary movements including posture, locomotion and reaching across vertebrate species. In contrast to the corticospinal system, there is only sparse knowledge on the motor physiology of the functionally important reticulospinal system in humans.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in applied evolutionary biology

We are seeking a PhD student to join us (Prof. Anna Lindholm and Dr. Andri Manser in a research project at the Department of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Studies assessing the potential of a naturally occurring selfish genetic element (called t haplotype) as a tool to control invasive mouse pests on islands where they harm endemic wildlife. The t haplotype is a supergene in house mice with two seemingly ideal characteristics for pest control. First, males that carry two copies of the gene (t/t homozygotes) are completely sterile. Second, males that carry only one copy of the t (+/t heterozygotes) pass the gene on to 95% of their offspring rather than the 50% expected under Mendelian inheritance (gene drive), allowing the genetic propagation of the sterile t in a population. Preliminary work suggests that sterile t releases could offer a powerful, versatile, and humane tool to eradicate target populations due to a lack of fertile males. The aim of the project is to assess the potential of the sterile t as a pest control tool from a wide range of methodological angles.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Data-driven Marketing

How do influencers’ choices affect their long-term success on a digital platform? How to detect and target prospect early adopters of new products? How should a firm leverage customers’ behavioral traits and social network structure to promote the diffusion of a new product throughout a social network? These and related research questions will be the focus of the SNSF project that supports the position. The candidate will use quantitative methods (e.g., large-scale empirical data, experiments, and numeric simulations) to address them. The overall goal of the project is to understand the link between individual-level choices with the success of new products and their creators in social systems. The candidate’s research will not only advance theoretical understanding but also derive its implications for influencer marketing policies adopted by firms.

PhD position summary/title: Ph.D. Student position: Investigations of catalytic RNAs by ensemble and single-molecule fluorescence

This project focuses on the visualization of the splicing process of a catalytic RNA that takes place during RNA maturation. Self-splicing introns are fascinating examples of functional RNAs where structure and function are inextricably linked. We investigate the complex RNA folding mechanism of a mitochondrial intron of baker’s yeast and monitor its self-cleavage reaction by various fluorescent techniques, e.g. in the ensemble and on a single-molecule level, applying single-molecule Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (smFRET). For this purpose, we are fluorescently labeling the RNA at various positions. In this way, we want to understand the complexity of structure and the requirements leading to a perfect ligation of the coding regions. PhD position summary/title: PhD student

The reproducibility of scientific findings is crucial for the credibility of empirical research. The objective of the Center for Reproducible Science is to train the next generation of researchers in good research practices, to develop novel methodology related to reproducibility and replicability, and to improve the quality of scientific investigation using meta-science. The CRS brings together methodologists from across University of Zurich (UZH), working in fields which typically do not communicate with each other intensively. This methodological think tank allows to overcome traditional barriers between fields, and aims to determine sound state-of-the-art solutions to scientific challenges.
