(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  2-yr postdoc on Macroecological studies of ecosystem functioning under rising biosphere novelty

This postdoc project will assess the capacity of novel ecosystems to mitigate climate change (carbon pools and accumulation) and maintain ecosystem functioning (resilience) under ongoing global change. We will test if climate mitigation capacity and resilience are modulated by plant species richness in novel ecosystems, as has long been hypothesized for native plant communities. Additionally, we will explore if other aspects of ecological complexity, specifically megafauna-linked trophic complexity and geodiversity, further modulate these factors. The position will employ macroecological analyses using data from satellite remote sensing and existing data on plant and faunal communities to study these interactions and identify gradients of ecosystem novelty.  The position may also employ meta-analyses and field-based work in ECONOVO’s study areas in Europe and South Africa. The postdoc is expected to contribute ideas and concepts to the project and lead at least two high-quality papers in this research area. Furthermore, active participation in the project’s public outreach and teaching, along with collaboration with other team members, including students, is essential. This collaboration involves sharing skills and contributing to problem-solving within the postdoc’s area of expertise.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: 2½-yr postdoc modelling large herbivore impacts on soil carbon in rewilded landscapes

This postdoc project will use soil and ecosystem models to predict decadal-centennial scale carbon pool development comparing different rewilding scenarios under predicted climate trajectories. The selected candidate will use data on greenhouse gas exchange, soil C stocks, and quantities and distributions of SOM in fractions of varying persistence from rewilding sites sampled by other WildSoil team members to parameterize and potentially modify one or more state-of-the-art soil models (e.g. the Millennial model) to simulate animals’ regulation of SOM mobilization, storage and persistence. Integrating this model into one or more ecosystem models (e.g. LPJ-GUESS) modified to facilitate animal impacts, e.g. on vegetation carbon allocation, the candidate is expected to compare long-term ecosystem C stock trajectories between different rewilding scenarios, and to evaluate the resistance of stocks to future warmer and more extreme climates. The postdoc is expected to contribute ideas and concepts to the project and lead at least two high-quality papers in this research area. It is also expected that the postdoc contributes to the project’s public outreach and teaching, as well as collaborating with other team members, including students, sharing skills, and helping to solve problems in the postdoc’s area of expertise. Ideally, the candidate would be open to spending temporary periods abroad with our collaborators in leading soil and ecosystem modelling environments in Europe and/or North America.

(10) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: RE-ADVERTISEMENT: Postdoc in pancreatic cancer metabolism

Our lab is focused on understanding the rewired metabolism of pancreatic cancer (PDAC) cells and how it contributes to tumor growth and drug resistance. Using in vitro and in vivo PDAC models, we recently described metabolic vulnerabilities in nucleotide synthesis (PMID: 30470748) and iron metabolism to support mitochondrial respiration (PMID: 35771492). In addition to the rewired metabolism in cancer cells, metabolic cross-talk with elements of the tumor microenvironment (e.g. immune populations), can also support PDAC growth and drug response. Using cell culture-based studies, proteomics, and mouse models of PDAC, this project will explore how inhibition of metabolic processes can interfere with cancer cell growth while modulating anti-tumoral immune responses that could facilitate combinatorial approaches with immune modulators.

(11) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Researcher on Highly renewable energy systems under extreme weather events (2 years)

The electricity grid is the largest machine we have ever built, but climate change mitigation demands its profound and rapid transformation. Wind and solar energy allow decarbonizing power systems but make them sensitive to increasingly frequent and severe extreme weather events.

In the EXTREMES project, we will investigate how frequent, severe, prolonged in time, and extended in space the extreme episodes challenging our energy system can be. Gaining a deep understanding of these extreme phenomena is crucial to avoiding

blackouts and designing strategies to minimize their impact. We will use the PyPSA-Eur, an open high-resolution network model of the sector-coupled European energy system.

We will use the model to derive robust configurations of net-zero emissions energy systems. Then, we will use different techniques such as extreme statistics, principal component analysis, and machine learning techniques to unveil the key spatial and temporal characteristics of such extreme events. We will also investigate the impacts of climate change-induced events on energy systems.

(15) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: 2-year postdoc on effects of underwater noise on marine mammal populations

The project aims to investigate how porpoise populations are influenced by noise from offshore wind farms, service ships and by alterations of fish communities in the vicinity of wind farms. It builds on earlier projects where data on how porpoises respond behaviourally to different disturbances have been used for developing an agent-based population model for porpoises. The model simulates effects of noise on animal behaviour and energetics, and population effects emerge from reduced foraging in the presence of disturbances. The job involves collection of information on how fish communities are altered by disturbances and offshore constructions, and using this information to develop scenarios for simulating cumulative impacts of disturbances and altered fish communities on porpoises. The project is tightly integrated with the PrePARED project (https://owecprepared.org) and several other research projects, and the successful postdoc will therefore join a strong team of population modellers, marine ecologists and marine mammal researchers.
