Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc intensified water electrolysis
Green hydrogen from water electrolysis is becoming an important ingredient in realizing the energy transition, by storing large amounts of intermittent electricity and as a base chemical. The electrical resistances due to gas bubbles and those associated with kinetics, are sensitive to the use of pulsed voltages and application of magnetic fields. In this project, in collaboration with HyET E-Trol B.V., both will be studied in a zero-gap AEM electrolysis cell. Very high frequencies of applied voltages can lower the kinetic resistance (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.electacta.2021.138052) while low frequency pulsing can generate synchronized spatially varying patterns that promote release of bubbles. Magnetic fields influence the multiphase flow through the Lorentz force (https://doi.org/10.1007/s00348-015-2029-0) but also impact kinetics. The use of ferromagnetic electrode materials will be further investigated.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in ERC ViSioN: Virus Spread in Networks
The project “Virus Spread in Networks” (ViSioN) is funded by ERC as an Advanced Grant 2020. ViSioN presents a Network Science view on virus spread in networks, in which the duality between the virus transmission process and the contact graph is key. The devastating Corona crisis reveals two major shortcomings in traditional epidemiology. First, it ignores the human contact graph and implicitly assumes a homogeneous population without specific graph structure. Second, most models for the virus spreading process relate to a Markovian setting, with exponential infection and curing times, leading to an exponential decay of the epidemic. Measurements, however, point to significantly different infection and curing time distributions. In addition, digital technology can help in constructing the contact graph and combined with medical testing, all infected can be detected. ViSioN aims to develop the theory of non-Markovian epidemic process on networks, a surprisingly missing element today, because non-Markovian theory is needed to tell, based on the characteristic infection and curing times of the virus, how long a pandemic will last and when the peak occurs. Next, ViSioN will combine all available measurement technologies to construct the best possible contact graph via temporal networking or adaptive networking. Finally, ViSioN will explore how accurately infections can be predicted under partial information of process and contact graph.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Scientist for ALPHEUS Project: Innovative Pumped Turbine Hydro Storage for Green Energy
Renewable energy, especially wind and solar, is essential for our global efforts to decarbonize and slow the rate of global warming. However, the current electricity grid is unable to handle the intermittent nature of these energy sources, as the consumption of energy by industries and individuals often does not coincide in time with the generation of energy by the wind or sun. When electricity consumption is greater than generation, peaking (or backup) power supplies are needed. In wet mountains regions such as Norway and the Alps, Pumped Hydro Storage (PHS) is used for this purpose, with water pumped to reservoirs on mountaintops during times of excess power generation, then run through turbines back down to reservoirs in valleys during times of excess power consumption. This is the most efficient, mature, and lowest cost (both in terms of Euros and carbon emissions) means of energy storage, which is why over 95% of worldwide utility-scale energy storage is PHS.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doctoral Researcher RED&BLUE
Your goal in this PostDoc project is to co-design and co-develop an Integrative Forum (IF) that aims to facilitate two-way transdisciplinary exchange and dialogue on climate risk management. The IF, on the one hand, provides a ‘soft space’ for debate and reflection between research teams and societal partners. On the other hand, the dialogue in the IF provides an opportunity for innovative research on institutionalized logics, tactics, and procedures that hinder or enable effective cross-disciplinary collaboration. In addition to known qualitative research approaches, novel ArtificiaI Intelligence techniques will support the creation of the IF by, e.g., recognizing the stakeholders’ values and norms, clustering and visualizing stakeholders’ arguments and perspectives, finding novel viewpoints, and modelling opinion dynamics over time.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PostDoc – Probabilistic Design of Aerospace Structures with Artificial Intelligence
This postdoctoral research aims at exploring data-driven methodologies to establish the structure-process-property link in the context of fiber reinforced polymer composites used in aircraft structures and topology optimization of such structures to ensure minimal defect and thus maximum performance during service. Currently, the defect formation and their impact on the lifetime can only be predicted via computationally expensive simulations in deterministic settings. In this project we aim to create accurate and efficient constitutive materials models to quantify uncertainties. This will ultimately enable the acceleration of the simulations required for obtaining new structural designs through generative design algorithms based on process-property relations integrating product and manufacturing process optimization.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Flood Damage Data and Impact Modelling
Recent floods in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium showed the catastrophic nature that these extreme events can have on our built environment and infrastructure. These events caused loss of life and huge damage. The event is also a unique opportunity to improve the flood impact models. Therefore data has to be collected and analyzed. The present Interreg project within the EMR (Euregio Meuse-Rhine) aims to improve these models, but this can only be done if data of sufficient quality is collected. This project is expected to:

The resulting (stochastic) model has to be a well-founded tool with which long-term predictions can be made of the dynamics in the emissions (50 to 100 years) under various conditions. This tool has to be accepted by the Dutch authorities and be able to be used by environmental consultants.
