Dr. Lauren A. Magee is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Children’s Health Services Research at the Indiana University School of Medicine. She is a criminologist and health services researcher, with an interdisciplinary research agenda focused on preventing firearm injuries, reducing health disparities within communities, and identifying opportunities for intervention among people impacted by firearm violence.

Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) is currently seeking applications from highly motivated, team-oriented candidates for a research postdoctoral fellowship. The full-time position will focus on honing expertise and research acumen in the areas of adolescent firearm injuries and death, mental health, traumatic stress, and defining trauma networks to identify children and young adults exposed to firearm injury and estimate prevalence rates of mental health outcomes, firearm injury, and mortality among network members to identify future opportunities for interventions.
Candidates with interests in social network analysis, data informatics, and developing, and implementing applied research projects aimed at improving reach and effectiveness of behavioral health services for young people are encouraged to apply. The fellow will actively participate in implementation, data analysis, and dissemination of findings (manuscripts, presentations) from NIH studies. Additional opportunities include contributing to studies on youth-participatory and community-engaged research as well as health informatics. The fellow will receive mentorship from faculty investigators toward the development of an independent program of research. Training will be provided in project design, grant writing, and research ethics. Salary and benefits are commensurate with NIH rates based on training and years of experience.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: BME Postdoctoral Fellow – Cardiovascular Medicine

A postdoctoral position is available late summer of 2025 in the laboratory of Dr. Thomas Everett at Indiana University Indianapolis to investigate the cardiovascular effects of altered autonomic tone within various clinical applications.

This emerging new area of research focuses on understanding the role of nerve activity on physiological events. This includes signal processing and both time-series and frequency domain analysis of physiological recordings including ECG and nerve recordings. This data is used to investigate the cardiovascular effects of altered vagal tone and sympathetic nerve activity.
The postdoctoral candidate would be involved in:
    • Data analysis and presentation of original work at regional, national, and international platforms.
    • Manuscript preparation and publication of original work in high impact peer-reviewed journals.
    • Grant preparation and submissions to intramural and extramural funding agencies.

Dr. Zhang’s lab is focusing on identification of genetic and epigenetic alterations in human cancer cells and understanding how these alterations contribute to tumor development, therapeutic resistance, and tumor-immune interactions in solid cancers. Dr. Zhang’s lab has identified some genes involving in the modulation of tumor microenvironment and tumor immune evasion, and developed novel therapeutic strategies in preclinical models (Fang Y, et al., JCI 2021, Zhou Z., et al., Nature BME 2021, Tao Y, et al., Adv Sci 2024). Dr. Zhang’s lab has developed a number of technical platforms that facilitate the current research, including mouse tumor models, organoid models, and novel drug delivery systems.

(10) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Ophthalmology

A postdoctoral position is now available in the Department of Ophthalmology in the School of Medicine at Indiana University. Our research focus is retinal cell biology with the goal of discovering small molecule therapy for photoreceptor degenerative disorders. To elucidate the disease mechanisms, we genetically dissect the process of photoreceptor morphogenesis and maintenance in vertebrate animals. Our laboratory pioneered real-time imaging of proteins and small molecules within the retina, and takes advantage of state of the art confocal/multiphoton/superresolution microscopy techniques. Our research also heavily depends on the tissue culture system to biochemically study the components required for photoreceptor morphogenesis/maintenance.

The applicant is expected to be highly independent and be capable of designing experiments and conducting hypothesis-based research projects. The candidate should have a strong background in cell biology, molecular biology, or biochemistry. Daily recording in a lab notebook will be required. Knowledge of fluorescence microscopy is favorable, although not necessary. Salary will be commensurate with experience and will adhere to current Indiana School of Medicine guidelines.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Inner-Ear Biology

We are looking for a motivated and creative post-doctoral fellow to join our group at the Indiana School of Medicine. Our NIH funded lab studies pathophysiology of the inner ear using multiple genetic mouse models and a novel human stem cell-derived 3D inner ear organoid model. We study genetically-mediated hair cell and neuronal degeneration in these model system to determine cellular networks that lead to cell death and to establish molecules that can prevent degeneration.

Experimental approaches being used in the lab include inner ear drug delivery, CRISPR/Cas9, single cell RNA-seq, cell culture with live cell imaging, immunohistochemistry with confocal microscopy, Ca2+ imaging, coimmunoprecipitation and proteomics.

The Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research conducts basic science and translational research within the Department of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Pathology & Laboratory Medicine

The Dementia Laboratory in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Indiana University is seeking an outstanding candidate for a postdoctoral position. The selected individual will participate in research focused on the molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration in diseases caused by TDP-43 misfolding. The lab will also continue exploring TDP-43 in its hybrid form as associated with annexin A11. These research projects are funded by the NINDS and will be carried out under the direction of Drs. Kathy L. Newell and Laura Cracco. The studies will be carried out using methodologies of proteomics and genetics. Protein extraction from the brain tissue of individuals with frontotemporal dementias, TDP-43 characterization by biochemical methods and transmission electron microscopy will take place in parallel with neuropathological and structural studies.
The Dementia Laboratory has active collaborations with national and international laboratories including the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (Cambridge, UK) and ICGEB (Trieste, Italy). Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Bioinformatics

Successful applicants will have strong academic preparation (PhD, MD, MD/PhD or equivalent, in a relevant discipline), high motivation and enthusiasm for research, excellent written and oral communication skills including evidence of successful manuscript writing and publication productivity, strong intellectual curiosity, creativity, flexibility, a commitment to the scientific goals of the program, desire to make a contribution, and the ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative transdisciplinary team, which includes mentoring graduate and undergraduate students. (21) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow – Neurology – Obeid Epilepsy Lab

A post-doctoral research position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Makram Obeid. The postdoctoral fellow will test research hypotheses in rodent seizure models and cell cultures, primarily utilizing molecular and cell biology techniques. The Obeid lab investigates the mechanisms of seizure emergence and their effects on cognitive and behavioral neurodevelopment in rodent seizure models. Our primary goal is to identify molecular targets for novel treatment strategies. The laboratory employs a variety of molecular techniques, longterm continuous EEG monitoring in rodents, and neurobehavioral testing panels. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to independently plan and conduct experiments under the guidance of the PI, using molecular and cellular biology techniques that include, but are not limited to, cell culture, western blotting, PCR, gene knockdown and overexpression, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemistry. Laboratory work will involve animal handling and the potential participation in neurobehavioral testing. Work may also involve electrode implantation surgery and EEG recording in rodents (initially semi-independently under the PI’s supervision). The postdoctoral fellow is expected to collect and analyze data, summarize findings, and participate/assist in the preparation of scientific manuscripts, abstracts, posters, and possibly grants. The duties also include training lab personal, participating in laboratory and equipment maintenance, ordering supplies as needed, performing literature review, updating research protocols and design, and potentially developing new ideas that serve the research goals set by the PI.
