(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctor in theoretical Computer Science

At the heart of computational complexity theory is the quest to understand the nature of efficient computation. What makes a problem computationally hard or easy? How can we show that every algorithm that solves a certain problem must necessarily consume a large amount of resources (such as time or memory, say)? The study of the potential and limits of efficient computation is about foundational, mathematical, research, but research results in computational complexity theory have had major impact in other areas of computer science and other scientific disciplines, and have given rise to some of the most important open problems in modern mathematics.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post doc in Sustainability science

The project aims to examine how inequality interacts with adaptation responses to extreme urban heat and to identify the institutional conditions required for building socially sound and climate-resilient cities. We are interested in examining these questions in the context of the Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in the city of Accra in Ghana. Located in a climatically vulnerable region, the city shares features of many metropolises in the global South, where sweltering heat is intertwined with mounting inequality, growing urban population, and uneven development. By using a mixed-methods approach, we integrate quantitative techniques and qualitative methods to collect and analyze data on how the benefits or costs of adaptation policy responses are distributed among different social groups.

The successful applicant will be appointed for two years collaborating with the project team’s members for data collection and analysis drawing on empirical evidence in Accra, Ghana. The position will be supervised by Principal Investigator Maryam Nastar, associate professor at the Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies (LUCSUS) and in collaboration with Prof. Frederick Ato Armah at the University of Cape Coast.

(09) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in computional modelling of Alzheimer’s disease progression

Dementia is a major cause of disability and dependency in a growing older population, and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is one of the most common cause of dementia in the elderly population. Recent research has provided robust evidence that once cognitive symptoms become apparent and clearly quantifiable with traditional neuropsychological tests, AD pathology was already accumulating in the central nervous systems for years, even decades. This preclinical stage of the disease is increasingly becoming the main target of the clinical research on AD. The postdoc project focuses on gaining a better understanding of the interactions between amyloid, tau and neurodegeneration across the disease timeline. Particular emphasis will be on developing mechanism based computational models of AD that can be applied to multimodal data (such as PET or fluid biomarkers). Models will be used to probe questions about disease mechanisms and provide valuable longitudinal predictions of imaging and fluid biomarkers. The postdoc will also be embedded in a national and international network of researchers focusing on brain functional changes in both healthy aging and neurodegeneration including two co-supervisors, namely Prof. Alain Goriely (University of Oxford, UK) and Dr. Jacob Vogel (Lund University, Sweden).

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral position in Biomedical Engineering with partial placement at the MAX IV Laboratory

oft knee joint tissues connect or transmit forces during movement in the body.  Osteoarthritis (OA) is a joint disease where the tissues degenerate, which affects their composition, microstructure and mechanical performance. The position is within a larger project that strives to understand the development of OA, in order to develop tools for better prediction of the onset and progression of osteoarthritis in the knee joint tissues. This position will focus on the role of the subchondral bone and the soft/mineralized tissue interface.

The beamline goal for the post-doc specifically is dedicated to X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), with the main aim to develop calibration strategies for 3D XRF measurements.  Self-absorption is a recurrent problem in 3D XRF so many beamline users would benefit from the development of self-absorption correction schemes. This development will be carried out for the study of the mineralized tissue with the scientific goals directly linked to the research questions addressed above, with a focus on understanding the interface between soft and mineralized tissues and the progression of mineralization during development of OA. Specific emphasis is on elucidating the role of different trace elements and links to inflammation.

(13) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in Biomedical Engineering with a focus on comptuational modeling of cortical bone fracture

Healthy bone has a unique ability to resist fracture due to its hierarchical composite structure, but the fracture resistance decreases dramatically with age and in patients with osteoporosis. Yet, damage mechanisms connected to aging are not well understood. This project focuses on understanding how bone tissue resists mechanical loading, how damage and cracks initiate and propagate, and how this is fundamentally altered with age and disease. By pinpointing specific changes (geometrical, structural, compositional etc.) that have a major effect on the fracture resistance of bone, it would be possible to guide development of new diagnostic tools in the clinic as well as new therapeutical treatments. The overall project uses a combined approach of fracture mechanical testing, high-resolution imaging techniques and computational models.

The goal for the post-doc specifically is to develop phase field models to simulate crack propagation and fracture of cortical bone tissue. Special focus will be given to capture the interface mechanics known to govern damage initiation and growth at the microscale in healthy bone. Phase field models will be built based on high-resolution images and will be validated against experimental data. Altogether, this project will unravel the role of orientation, interface properties, porosity, and fracture energy, which are keys to understanding the degeneration of bone’s mechanical response during aging and osteoporosis.

(14) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral fellow in biogeochemical modelling with a focus on soil microbial ecology

This project aims to integrate recently uncovered ecological insights into modelling, particularly targeting the impact of climate (i.e., increased frequency of droughts, more extreme drying and rewetting events, and elevated temperatures) on soil organic carbon dynamics. A key task involves the integration of soil microbial features (e.g., EcoSMMARTS model) into a hydro-biogeochemical framework (e.g.,HYDRUS interface) for a more accurate mechanistic representation in models of the patterns of carbon emission/sequestration in soil vertical profiles. The merged model will be employed to investigate the nuances of perennial vs annual crop systems, seeking to uncover the pros and cons of each approach and contributing to the broader understanding of carbon dynamics in soil ecosystems.

The project exclusively focuses on modelling but is conducted in close collaboration and active two-way exchange with an empirical team. The candidate will serve as a link between these two research environments, represented by the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science and the Department of Biology.

(16) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral fellow in Soil Microbial AgroEcology

The aim of this BECC (see film about BECC further down) research area funded project is to determine how different farm management types impact the microbial performance and the resilience of different soils to climatic disturbances, especially drought. An important part of drought resilience is mediated via the soil’s organic matter concentrations, and soil organic matter formation and stabilization is strongly controlled by the soil’s microbial community. This project will investigate the influence of farm management type via a set of 30 conventionally or organically managed farms in Scania, and determine soil processes as microbial growth, enzymatic activities, and the soils’ biodiversity and direct characterization of trophic interactions. Combined microscale measurements using microfluidic soil chips, optical microscopy observations and molecular characterization of the soil microbial communities will be used together with bulk analyses of the soils. The postdoc will further be stationed for approximately 3 months of their time at the University of Gothenburg.

(18) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral fellow in physical chemistry

COMMONS is a Center of Excellence funded by the Swedish Research Council, with the theme “Commonalities in membrane molecular interactions” . The overarching aim of COMMONS is to provide a multifaceted scientific environment focusing on unifying physicochemical processes of key importance for the function of cellular membranes and their effects on other biomolecules. The COMMONS  Center brings together methodological and theoretical expertise from Lund University, Chalmers and Copenhagen University, and will serve as host for a Graduate School and a Visting Professor program to  attract international experts from a broad field of biomembrane science.

Examples of unifying physicochemical processes that determine the function of cellular membranes include the cooperative molecular mechanisms that drive amyloid plaque formation in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease and atherosclerosis. The pathogenicity of amyloids is believed to involve membrane association and remodeling, mechanisms that share generic features with the host defense peptides in combating infection. Further, cooperative interactions and membrane remodeling generate kinetically trapped states, which can serve as both a source and trap of free energy. In fact, all these phenomena served as basic design principles behind the function of the revolutionary lipid nanoparticles that helped mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic.
