The position is linked to the Department of Energy and Process Engineering and the Sustainable Energy Systems group. The group has a well-established expertise in energy supply systems, building energy services, and renewables. Research activities within the group range from building energy use, building energy supply, indoor environment, energy efficiency, building services, control and automation, energy planning, building performance modelling and simulation, to energy storages, etc. The group is strongly involved in the Norwegian FME Research Centre on Zero Emission Neighborhoods in Smart Cities (ZEN) as well as in various national and international projects, e.g. IEA Tasks or EBC Annexes. The group is responsible for the HVAC laboratory at the department.

The series of IPCC assessment reports increasingly make clear that how we manage our land resources (agricultural systems and forestry) is essential to achieve the large-scale negative emissions that are required to stabilize temperature changes at low levels. Afforestation, biochar, and bioenergy coupled with CCS (BECCS), are among the most popular negative emission technologies (NETs), but the potentials, implications (trade-offs), and opportunities (e.g., co-benefits) of their large-scale sustainable deployment are unclear, and largely vary with geographical context, socio-economic conditions and technologies. Integrated sustainability analyses where life-cycle assessment (LCA) is integrated with land availability scenarios and/or outcomes of alternative socio-economic pathways from Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) are emerging as novel tools to improve the quantification of the climate change benefits of NETs. They are also useful to support the optimization of NETs deployment in ways that can minimize adverse side-effects from increased competition for land and resources, with the ambition to maximize co-benefits for the achievement of multiple Sustainable Development Goals.

The research will require the use of eco-technoeconomic analysis (eTEA) methodologies to evaluate candidate liquid hydrogen production and/or storage processes and systems in order to quantify their potential economic, environmental, or sociopolitical value of various technologies in comparison to alternative solutions. Key research elements will include the conceptual design, synthesis, and simulation of candidate commercial scale liquid hydrogen production and/or storage processes currently at technology readiness level 6 or lower; bottom-up economic analyses to estimate costs as a function of geography and markets; dynamic life cycle assessment (LCA) of commercial supply chain implementation; and big-picture assessments made within the context of the triple bottom line of sustainability.

The Ocean Grid project, which is a part of the Norwegian Government’s Green Platform Initiative, aims to develop cost-competitive energy technologies for the international market through research-based innovation. The prominent driver for this research is the ambition to re-align the Norwegian offshore industry from Oil & Gas-based activities towards offshore wind energy and hydrogen. The candidate will work in a joint research project with leading energy companies and developers, suppliers and manufacturers, and research and innovation organisations.

EXIOBASE and LC-IMPACT  are two major pillars of the digital research infrastructure of the Industrial Ecology Programme as well as of the Industrial Ecology community (together over 80,000 downloads in the last years). The successful applicant will take responsibility for maintaining and extending this infrastructure, with a focus on Open Science/FAIR data and code management. The outcome of this process will be a fully automated, parallelized data pipeline integrated into the NTNU digital infrastructure (OpenStack and HPC cluster). Another major part of the work will be the further increase of the uptake of these databases through web-presence development, development and end-user focused software and workshops/presentations of these at relevant conferences.

The objective of the postdoc position is to develop novel approaches for hazard mapping for interdependent and cascading meteorological, hydrological, and geological hazards involved in erosion-triggered quick clay landslides based on an XAI methodology. XAI is a set of tools that help to understand and interpret Machine Learning (ML) models that builds on the principles that can be briefly summarized as; explain to justify, explain to control, explain to discover, and explain to improve. The novel approach will rely on the use of XAI tools to develop explainable and understandable ML models to forecast multi-hazard events that account for interdependencies between the multi-hazard events, nonlinearities, and cascading effects. The Building Technology group is responsible for research and teaching within the design of sustainable and functional buildings, with a special focus on material use and the building envelope. Building technology includes the engineering fields of building physics/energy use, fire engineering, and acoustics. In addition, the disciplines of climate adaptation, building materials, circular economy, and environmental system analysis are central to the research group. The group has laboratory cooperation with SINTEF Community as well as with the Acoustics group at the Department of Electronic Systems, NTNU.

The position is funded by NTNU and will partly be connected to a project focusing on bias, discrimination and unfairness problems related to the use of AI in the employee recruitment process. The project (with short title “BIAS”) is funded by the European Union (EU)  and is of highly multidisciplinary nature where the task of our department focuses on design and implementation of an AI-based decision support system that enables detection of possible unfair decisions, and development of methods to mitigate or avoid unfair decision.

Changes in states of linguistic knowledge, be it in develop­ment (acqui­sition) or possible erosion over the life­span (attri­tion), exa­mined across complementary populations and multiple lan­guage com­binations (variation), provide crucial know­ledge about the organi­za­tion of mental gram­mars. AcqVA conducts research based on real-life situ­a­tions, re­flect­ing today’s globa­lized world where learning mul­tiple lan­guages at various points in the lifetime has become increasingly common. AcqVA’s vision is to provide ground­breaking data and novel theories that will sub­stan­tially increase our understanding of how mental gram­mars may vary, how they develop in children and adults, and how they change under condi­tions of reduced input and use.

We are now looking for a Post.doc. fellow that can continue to develop the synergies between machine-/deep learning methods and high-throughput imaging on microfluidic platforms. The goal is to develop real-time computer vision tools for detection, classification and tracking of drops, bubbles and solids.

We are looking for someone to be part of a research group investigating how increasing post-consumer scrap contents in aluminum affect manufacturing processes and new business models. You will be part of the recent research project, AluGreen, owned by Norsk Hydro ASA and funded by the Norwegian Research Council and a consortium of 16 industry partners. In addition, you will be a part of the bigger research group focusing on industrial innovation and digital security with the connecting master program. This research group is part of and lead the focus area of human and organizational aspects in the eight-year project of cyber security in critical sectors in Norway.

This project will investigate how coral larvae recognize suitable habitats and decide about a permanent settlement side. We aim to study the underlying sensory system, how these are integrating and encoding external environmental signals and how this leads to behavioral output in the animal. The project will use a range of techniques centered around cellular physiology, behavior and molecular biology to address these questions. We also closely collaborate with other researchers to bring these aspects into an environmental context.

The building and construction sector contributes to 38% of global greenhouse gas emissions and the largest materials use. A fundamental transition is required make the sector sustainable. Green2050 is a new research center seeking to guide the industry to sustainability and net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. It is lead by NTNU’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, involving faculty members from Architecture, Business, Energy Engineering, Informatics, Medicine, and Social Sciences. Sustainable development requires increased materials and energy efficiency as well as a decarbonization of material and energy supply. The position is part of the Green2050 International Initiatives focusing on road-mapping and planning of the transition.
