PhD position summary/title: PhD in Physical properties in black soldier fly larvae processing

Black soldier fly processing is an emerging technology for the recycling of organic waste. Waste treatment performance, composition and quality of feed and fertilizer products, as well as temperatures and emissions from the bioconversion processes, are highly feedstock dependent. Previous studies have primarily emphasized the role of biowaste nutrients, overlooking the influence of physical properties such as texture, consistency, viscosity, bulk density, porosity, particle size, and colour. Altering physical biowaste properties may influence bioconversion by altering biowaste ingestion and egestion, larval aggregation and thermoregulation as well as gut residence times. In addition, altering physical properties may change oxygen available to microbes initiating a chain of interconnected reactions such as increased microbial heat, nutrient competition between larvae and microbes, emissions of greenhouse gas emissions by microbial respiration and production of defence compounds by larvae such as antimicrobial peptides and melanin. Understanding the effects of physical properties on heat generation will be of particular importance as it could impact biowaste treatment time and the production of high-value products, such as melanin and antimicrobial peptides. You will conduct cutting-edge research to entangle the influence of biowaste’s physical properties on various aspects of the bioconversion process as described above. The objective is to understand the influence of physical parameters on the bioconversion process and identify optimal process windows, ultimately leading to the development of practical tools. The project background should be seen as a broad framework that can be detailed and altered based on your background and interests.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position: Theoretical and numerical modeling of dynamic fracture of nonlinear materials

This PhD position will focus on the fracture properties of materials with non-trivial mechanical properties. The objective is to develop theoretical and numerical models for NLEFM. This amounts in investigating how a nonlinear elastic response modifies features associated with the behavior of elastic fields in the vicinity of the propagating crack front and how they affect its dynamics. Different approaches for incorporating the material properties will be explored and evaluated. The theoretical and numerical results will then be compared to experimental data collected by collaborators and used to study the fundamental mechanisms governing the failure of nonlinear elastic materials. Ultimately, the methodology will be generalised to be applied to materials with any unconventional mechanical elastic response.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral position: ABSYS – Advancing Bypass Systems for Downstream Migration of European Key Umbrella Fish Species

The ABSYS project consists of four main tasks linked to the work packages to reach its overarching goals. In Task I is devoted to a literature review of laboratory and field studies on various bypass systems. In Task II, hydraulic and live-fish tests of innovative bypass system layouts will be conducted in a large etho-hydraulic flume at VAW. The bypass system designs will be numerically developed by the Computational Fluid- and Morphodynamics (CFM) group of VAW and constructed in a 1:1 Froude model in the flume. In Task III, the hydraulic and live-fish tests of the optimum bypass layouts will be conducted with the partners in a semi-natural flume in the Vattenfall laboratory, Sweden for 6-8 weeks. Task IV investigates operational aspects of the innovative bypass system such as clogging by sediment and floating debris in the etho-hydraulic flume. In the laboratory tests, Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry (ADV) will be used to measure flow velocities, and video-based 3D fish tracking systems are employed to determine fish tracks and concomitant swimming kinematics. Hydraulic and fish data will be analyzed to investigate the effect of turbulent flow structures generated by the different bypass layouts on the swimming behavior of target fish species and determine their fish passage efficiency under various flow conditions. Live-fish tests will be conducted at VAW and Vattenfall laboratories in collaboration with the IfU of ETH Zurich, NINA, and Vattenfall AB. Strong Python (mainly) and MATLAB coding for camera calibration, image analysis, and animal tracking and data analysis skills are required for the position. You will conduct the research activities defined in the four tasks of the project, publish the research results in scientific journals and present them at international conferences and workshops. The candidate will take fish handling courses to conduct live-fish tests in the laboratory and other courses required in the scope of the doctorate at ETH Zurich (a total of 12 ECTS).

(12) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher – Microalgae: a resilient and dense source of Micronutrients

Microalgae are unicellular microorganisms that are getting increasing attention as one of the more sustainable novel foods globally. Microalgae can reach higher areal productivity than terrestrial plants, do not require arable land or fresh water, and can use fertilizers with almost 100% efficiency. Microalgae can provide a significant number of essential nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids and amino acids, to support human health. In the last decades, microalgae have been the focus of extensive research as a novel source of proteins and lipids, while vitamins and minerals (micronutrients) received less attention. Microalgae however are considered the most resilient micronutrient-dense food source. For instance, some microalgae can contain 100 times more iron compared to beef and 500 times more vitamin D than cow milk. Given their extremely high nutritional value, daily consumption of 2-10 g of microalgae could provide most of the micronutrients needed in a healthy diet. Micronutrient deficiencies cause morbidity and mortality affecting human potential worldwide. Currently, the main sources of bioavailable micronutrients are vegetables, fruits, and animal-based products. Climate change is expected to strongly impact the productivity of these agricultural products. Vulnerabilities of our food systems together with demands of the growing human population (projected 10 billion by 2050) are expected to increase the price of these nutrient-dense foods, thus limiting their access, and therefore aggravating the micronutrient deficiency-related issues.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position on 3D Biohybrid Neuromuscular Tissues for Neuronal Control of Muscle Actuation

The PhD focuses on developing a 3D tissue engineering platform for integrating neurons with skeletal muscle cells in a 3D construct. In biohybrid robotics, we lack long-term compatible biological control methods of muscle actuation, as we rely on global electric fields to induce muscle contraction. Your work would address this unmet need and pave the way for the next generation of controllable and smart biohybrid robots. Crucially, your work would also serve as a platform to study the biology of neuromuscular pathologies and treatment methods as an in vitro model with a functional readout alongside more traditional biochemical characterization methods. Close collaborators of the project would include all members of the ALIVE biohybrid project stream (see description below). You would also contribute to the efforts of an SNF Sinergia consortium focused on Machine-learned Design and Bioxolography of Functional 3D Skeletal Muscle Tissues. The consortium consists of 4 research groups within Switzerland and Germany, with expertise in cell biology, muscle tissue engineering, and volumetric 3D printing techniques.
