PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Cell and Molecular Biology focusing on Proteomic Hematology
Fetal and adult blood cell development (hematopoiesis) are regulated by largely distinct sets of cell-intrinsic gene regulatory networks as well as extracellular cues in their respective microenvironment. These developmental-specific programs drive hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells in children and adult to divergent susceptibility to initiation and progression of acute leukemia. Although much progress has been made in the treatment of some types of acute leukemia, mixed lineage leukemia (MLL)-rearranged acute leukemias are still associated with poor prognosis in both children and adults. New therapeutic options that are tailored to the biology of the disease are urgently needed.
The dynamic interactions and signals between the leukemic cells and their local environment (niche) represent specific vulnerabilities of the disease that can be harnessed for novel treatments. To develop novel age-tailored targeted therapies for the treatment of acute leukemia, it is essential to study the proteins that are the main actors of this interplay and represent the true effectors of disease. The research group’s previous cellular proteomic studies have provided detailed insight into the ontogenic influence on the intracellular proteomic programs active in leukemia-initiating cells. With the ongoing work, we are starting to uncover their interplay with the extracellular proteomic cues of the niche in which the disease propagates.
Although the interdependence of leukemia and the niche is becoming increasingly evident, little is known about this interplay during disease propagation. We hypothesize that defined developmental changes affect this interplay and hold the key to the development of age-tailored treatment of pediatric and adult acute leukemia. The main objective of this project is to ascertain combination therapies that can effectively assault the molecular basis behind childhood leukemia transformation and progression, by perturbation of both cell-intrinsic and niche-associated factors.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Aerosol Technology with Focus on Non Exhaust Transport Emissions from Sustainable Transport Systems
Aerosols are mixtures of gases and particles, where the air we breathe is a common example. Exposure to aerosol particles (measured as PM2.5) is today the largest environmental risk factor in Europe. EU has recently decided on sharpened transport emission and air quality legislations which will cause a strong demand for aerosol scientists within industry, society and academia. The transition to electrification and more sustainable fuels will reduce the exposure to tailpipe emissions. This makes non-exhaust emissions (NEE) from brakes, tyres and roads the dominating aerosol emissions from road transport. Particles in NEE may contain metal oxides, microplastics and quartz. However, the characteristics and toxicological properties of NEE from different sources remain poorly known, inhibiting formulating efficient policy.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in ICT-support for energy-efficient building design
The project will explore the use of advanced ICT technologies, such as building information modelling (BIM), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Building Performance Simulation (BPS), to support the design and engineering of energy-efficient buildings. The research will be embedded in an international context through participation in IEA Annex 91 on open BIM for Energy Efficient Buildings (https://annex91.iea-ebc.org).
Whilst the use of BIM to support BPS has been pursued since the 1990s, there are still many challenges to overcome to ensure a seamless integration between BIM and BPS. Furthermore, the domain of BPS is expanding rapidly, leaving users with a wide choice of first-principle based algorithms and machine learning approaches. This project will advance the concept of tool interoperability, looking at bi-directional data exchange between various applications and BIM. It will explore the different challenges related to model selection, model resolution, model fidelity, and adapting models to a specific building design and engineering context. The research will take a process-based approach, looking in-depth at information flows between data repositories and different building performance models. This project will particularly investigate the use of open BIM (IFC schema). It will explore workflows for different stages of the design process: early stage, technical design, and post-occupancy building operation. Anticipated results include processes, tools, guidelines, best-practice descriptions, and deep insights into ways of engineering energy-efficient buildings.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in sustainable value chains for battery industries
The doctoral student will be admitted to doctoral studies in Technology and society, specialising in emerging value chains for battery industries. EU plans to electrify the transport sector and rapidly build a new manufacturing industry to produce batteries. Batteries use critical raw materials that are imported from outside of Europe and sometimes hard to access due to stiff competition and geopolitical rivalry. It is presently unclear to what extent the emerging European battery industry will be able to source the required materials and how effective current policies are to deliver on policymakers’ ambitions.
The European Commission has launched a number of policies that will shape the development of future EU battery value chains including, for example, European battery alliance, Battery passport, CSRD and taxonomy, FitFor55, the Net Zero Industry act, the critical raw materials act as well as strategies to phase out combustion engine vehicles and electrify transport. The development will also be shaped by the geopolitical situation through what happens in the US (e.g., the future of the Inflation Reduction Act) and China, and the possibilities of sourcing critical raw materials within EU and from other countries.
The aim of this PhD project is to explore opportunities and challenges in the future European and global battery economy for the purpose of understanding and anticipating risks, new battery technologies and their up-scaling needs, lock-ins, and how the innovation system evolves. The results will help policy makers and industry make better informed decisions when maneuvering this rapid and most likely bumpy transition.
