Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Researcher on Highly renewable energy systems under extreme weather events (2 years)
The electricity grid is the largest machine we have ever built, but climate change mitigation demands its profound and rapid transformation. Wind and solar energy allow decarbonizing power systems but make them sensitive to increasingly frequent and severe extreme weather events. In the EXTREMES project, we will investigate how frequent, severe, prolonged in time, and extended in space the extreme episodes challenging our energy system can be. Gaining a deep understanding of these extreme phenomena is crucial to avoiding blackouts and designing strategies to minimize their impact. We will use the PyPSA-Eur, an open high-resolution network model of the sector-coupled European energy system. We will use the model to derive robust configurations of net-zero emissions energy systems. Then, we will use different techniques such as extreme statistics, principal component analysis, and machine learning techniques to unveil the key spatial and temporal characteristics of such extreme events. We will also investigate the impacts of climate change-induced events on energy systems.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in cerebrospinal fluid physiology
Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is serious condition where the ventricles of the brain fill with blood. A known result of IVH is acidosis, which aggravates the outcome. Normal brain function is dependent on maintaining brain pH and little is known about how CSF pH is regulated. As the brain is in direct contact with the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), changes in CSF pH directly affect the brain tissue. It is believed that by actively secreting bases such as HCO3- the choroid plexus (CP) is important in CSF pH regulation. The aim of the research project is to identify the molecular mechanisms behind the ability of the CP to sense and respond to changes in CSF pH during IVH mediated acidosis. We hypothesize that the receptor RPTPγ is a HCO3- sensing protein in the luminal membrane of CP that activates HCO3- extrusion via the HCO3- transporters Ncbe, NBCe2 and NBCn1. We will explore how the CP senses pH changes using in vitro and in vivo models using knockdown techniques, in vivo CSF pH analysis and a mouse model of IVH.
