(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral studies in Central Nervous System Regeneration after Spinal Cord Injury (scholarship)

Our lab investigates stromal scar formation and its impact on axonal regeneration and functional recovery following spinal cord injury. We discovered a new population of perivascular cells, called type A pericytes, as the source of fibrotic scar tissue (Göritz et al., Science, 2011) and identified pericyte-derived scar formation as a therapeutic target to achieve axonal regeneration and functional recovery following spinal cord injury (Dias et al., Cell, 2018). Recently, we showed that fibrotic scarring by perivascular cells is a conserved mechanism in the adult mammalian CNS (Dias et al., Nature Com., 2021). The intended project will test different strategies to interfere with fibrotic scarring to enhance axonal regeneration and functional recovery following spinal cord injury.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Precision Psychiatry

We are now looking for a postdoctoral researcher for a two-year employment. You will be working with statistical modelling in two different studies. In both studies you will collaborate with colleagues at Oxford University (UK), University of North Carolina Chapel Hill (US) and collaborators in Sweden.

Study 1 is a registry study led by John Wallert and focused on risk factors for suicide among psychiatric patients that have experienced compulsive mental care. Temporal trends in the risk of suicide and also stratified risks by gender and age will be studied. Forty years of nationwide registry data with over 100,000 recorded compulsory care episodes defines the cohort to be studied. The work involves application of your expertise as epidemiologist/biostatistician to estimate absolute and relative risk of suicide. Your role also involves the production of scientific articles. There is also ample possibility to construct instruments that predict risk based on the risk factors that we will discover, and possibilities to apply more advanced modelling appropriate for large-scale observational data.

In Study 2 you will be working with multimodal data (including genetic data) in a nationwide suicide cohort with the purpose of improving present prediction of suicide aiming to derive and validate better risk models for suicide in the total population. Study 2 also provides the opportunity to apply both well-established statistical modelling and newer machine learning methodology.

About The Karolinska Institute, Sweden – Official Website

The Karolinska Institute sometimes known as the (Royal) Caroline Institute in English is a research-led medical university in Solna within the Stockholm urban area of Sweden. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The assembly consists of fifty professors from various medical disciplines at the university. The current rector of Karolinska Institute is Ole Petter Ottersen, who took office in August 2017.

The Karolinska Institute was founded in 1810 on the island of Kungsholmen on the west side of Stockholm; the main campus was relocated decades later to Solna, just outside Stockholm. A second campus was established more recently in Flemingsberg, Huddinge, south of Stockholm.

The Karolinska Institute is Sweden’s third oldest medical school, after Uppsala University (founded in 1477) and Lund University (founded in 1666). It is one of Sweden’s largest centres for training and research, accounting for 30% of the medical training and more than 40% of all academic medical and life science research conducted in Sweden.

The Karolinska University Hospital, located in Solna and Huddinge, is associated with the university as a research and teaching hospital. Together they form an academic health science centre. While most of the medical programs are taught in Swedish, the bulk of the PhD projects are conducted in English. The institute’s name is a reference to the Caroleans.
