The Optimization & Systems Theory research group at KTH is inviting applications for up to two postdoctoral researcher positions in the broad field of Intelligent and Autonomous Systems. All areas of intelligent and autonomous systems will be considered; however, the group particularly encourages applications from individuals who have expertise in the following four research pillars: (a) distributed control, optimization, and RL, (b) privacy and security in autonomous systems, (c) games and mechanism design in networks, and (d) physics-aware learning. The advertised post-doctoral position is within an ambitious Digital Futures ISPP Project titled “Smart Predictive Maintenance for Pharmaceutical Industry (SMART)”, led by Prof. Lihui Wang of KTH and Associate Director Business Strategy & Portfolio Benjamin Edvinsson (PhD) of AstraZeneca.

In this project you will play a pivotal role by designing and creating the human-centric interface between the AI models and the Operators working on the manufacturing lines through observational studies, persona creation and user journey mapping. The innovative interface will be used to seamlessly integrate the complex algorithmic outputs, decades of maintenance engineer expertise, and real time inputs from the Operators on the line. These data will feed into an intuitive and user-friendly visualization for operator and management informed decision making. You will experiment with and assess the merits of various interface modalities including Graphical User Interfaces, Extended Realities (e.g. AR, VR), Haptic Feedback, and contextual and peripheral information displays.

The Nuclear Physics Division within the Department of Physics at KTH in collaboration with SSM – The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority – seeks an outstanding postdoctoral researcher to conduct research on the development of radiation detection and imaging techniques for applications in nuclear safeguards and non- proliferation, nuclear security and related areas. The work is focused on development of methods for localization and non-destructive analysis (NDA) of radioactive materials using machine learning techniques and involves the application of numerical simulation codes, laboratory measurements and measurements in the field.

The postdoc position represents a unique opportunity to do research in the area of risk analytics and safety validation for automated vehicles – in close collaboration with Volvo cars and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, thus getting insights both into real industrial problems and developments as well as academic state of the art and evolving methodologies.

This project is a collaboration between Associate Professor Rodrigo Moreno ([email protected]) from the Division of Biomedical Imaging at KTH, Associate Professor Tobias Granberg from the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at Karolinska Insititute ([email protected]) and Associate Professor Markus Nilsson from the Department of Clinical Sciences at Lund University ([email protected]). The selected candidate will be based in Huddinge but is expected to make short visits to Lund.

Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) in the brain is a technique of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in which mechanical properties of the brain tissue are estimated non-invasively. This project aims to combine MRE and advanced diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) to develop the next generation of MRE methods to improve the biomechanical characterization of brain tissue.

In clinical practice, the supervision and the evaluation of a rehabilitation motion pattern remain a medical and engineering challenge due to the lack of biofeedback information from individual human biological tissues and structures. Skin electrodes are common, non-invasive tools used to record bioelectrical activity from the surface of the body. However, most skin-contact electrodes suffer from limited signal stability due to drying out of electrolytic gel, discomfort due to the stiffness and short circuit in multiple array electrodes grids. The recent surge of material sciences in developing epidermal electronics such as printing electronics on thin plastic or paper substrates with large area offers a promising alternative. The objective of this project is to develop biocompatible sensor based on lignocellulose. The post doctor will investigate lignocellulose composite electrode fabrication and the electrode performance including conductive ink printability, ultrasound transparency.

Urban mobility is changing rapidly due to new business models, and upcoming technological advancements like connected and automated mobility.

The Division of Transport and Systems Analysis at KTH is seeking a highly qualified candidate for a postdoctoral research position in Transportation Policy. The successful applicant will investigate future mobility scenarios focusing on policy solutions like congestion pricing. With the ultimate objectives of mitigating traffic congestion, enhancing accessibility, and improving social welfare, the postdoc will employ methodologies such as activity-based agent-based modeling, social welfare theory, and distributional analysis.

KTH operates and advances research and education at the Department of Engineering Mechanics within the School of Engineering Sciences (SCI) and the Department of Production Engineering at the School of Industrial Engineering and Management (ITM). We are currently broadening our multidisciplinary research efforts by introducing a postdoctoral position in Digital Twin for Ship Design and Production, a collaboration between two departments. This full-time position is primarily research-focused, with 90% dedicated to research activities and 10% to teaching. Furthermore, our commitment extends to creating a robust digital twin application framework, aimed at improving efficiency and reducing emissions in the realm of ship design and production.

Bio-based ethanol could be used to fully replace fossil-derived chemicals through efficient carbon coupling reactions and become one of the main renewable raw materials in tomorrow’s biorefineries. n-butyraldehyde is a very important product deriving from ethanol conversion and is a building block for production of a plethora of important C4+ chemicals. The project focuses on the production of crotonaldehyde from bioethanol and its selective hydrogenation to butyraldehyde. In this project, you will play a crucial role in advancing the bioethanol conversion technologies for future biorefineries. The work involves developing heterogeneous catalysts and comprehensive understanding of the chemical transformations as well as modelling and developing of the catalytic reactors required for these specialized conversions. The position is located at the division of process technology at KTH and will focus on CFD simulation of heat-transfer. It is part of our activity for sustainable processes and decarbonization of industry. The present post-doctoral project focuses on CFD simulations of chemically reacting flows with application to heat recovery. In this project, we consider the flow, turbulence, mixing, finite rate chemically reaction and conjugate heat-transfer in the simulations. The project will cover elementary and real type advanced heat-exchangers. We use both high-fidelity simulations to capture the details of the chemical associated with heat-transfer and commercial codes (ANSYS) for simulating the complex heat-exchanger. The work will consist of setting up simulations, meshing complex geometries, using super-computers, data analysis and presentation of the result. The data analysis might include some coding in python for creating/modifying short scripts for using Machine -Learning or modal analysis techniques.

Nuclear Power Safety (NPS) Division seeks two engaged postdocs to study (i) in-vessel corium melt retention (IVMR) in small modular reactor (SMR) of PWR type, and (ii) ex-vessel melt-coolant interactions and melt spreading. The projects are supported by Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (https://www.stralsakerhetsmyndigheten.se/) and APRI (https://www.apri.se/).  The IVMR research will be towards adaptation of the conventional IVR methodology developed for and used in the medium- and large-power PWRs and its further implementation in new SMR designs. The expected results are demonstration of potential efficiency of the IVMR strategy, which can significantly improve SMR safety performance by preservation of integrity of reactor pressure vessel, i.e. the existing safety barrier. For the research on ex-vessel melt-coolant interactions and melt spreading, the experiments will be performed in the DEFOR and CoSMUS facilities at KTH (https://www.physics.kth.se/nps/research/facilities) toward understanding of relevant phenomena important to ex-vessel corium risk assessment.

The division of Biophysics is located at SciLifeLab, where the team develops some of the world’s most used tools for modelling biological systems with particular applications to membrane proteins and techniques for drug design.
We are looking for a postdoc to work on molecular dynamics simulations to study biophysical phenomena, in particular related to development of the computer software GROMACS. The position includes development of new methods for managing, and analysing, simulations, as well as to develop applications, in particular in the field of handling and exchanging large data sets. The work may also encompass managing biomolecular force fields. The tasks will include programming in C++, but also applied research and good opportunities to contribute to scientific publications that tend to have very large academic impact. Much of the work is performed in close collaboration with other research groups throughout Europe.

Emerging food innovations, in combination with digitalization and automation, are expected to transform agro-food value chains, changing how we produce, process, package, supply and distribute food. Novel technologies and new initiatives within cellular agriculture, alternative protein substitutes and urban agriculture are just a few to name. This postdoctoral position focuses on business models and social acceptance of food innovations as well as their implications for sustainability and resilience. Some questions that the postdoc project can address, but is not limited to, are: how do new value chains develop for food innovations? What kind of new business models and new actors are emerging? How can food innovations be scaled up and result in sustainability and resilience? How do consumers and other actors perceive and accept emerging food innovations? What are the environmental impacts of innovations and new product-service systems for food?

We are looking for an HPC expert to contribute to one or multiple projects related to the GROMACS molecular simulation software. GROMACS is one of the most important HPC applications in the world and runs on all modern CPU and GPU architectures. GROMACS uses a hierarchical parallelization with a wide range of parallelization techniques from its SIMD library to GPU abstraction layer with CUDA, SYCL, and OpenCL backends, OpenMP, MPI. As the computational power increases, new algorithms are needed to make efficient use of the hardware. We are collaborating with world-leading experts in academia and at hardware vendors to develop efficient and scalable algorithms for molecular dynamics (MD). This work will be related to collaborative, international projects potentially including fast multipole electrostatics, fine-grained message-driven algorithms and machine learning potentials. All projects mainly target GPUs. Although MD is the base algorithm, these projects do not require deep knowledge of MD. But as MD is the target, iteration rates are often measured in hundreds of microseconds, which means that latency reduction and critical path optimizations are crucial. The GROMACS environment at KTH is shared between the Applied Physics department, where MD experts are located, and the high performance compute center, PDC, where HPC experts are located.

The advertised post-doctoral position is within an ambitious, European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Project titled “ULTRA”, led by Prof. Dejan Kostic. In this 2 Million EUR project, we want to dramatically change the way Internet Services are constructed.

Special emphasis will be paid to low latency, resilient frameworks for machine learning (including distributed and federated learning). Examples of other services to be built include advanced highly streamlined server software, Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) chains at the true speed of the underlying hardware, intra datacenter load balancing, agile and efficient geo-distributed data storage systems that meet their Service Level Objectives.

As a member of the research lab, you will be involved in experimental systems work in collaboration with faculty members and several doctoral students at our research lab. You will contribute to scientific publications as well as to new grant applications.
