(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Researcher in hybridization induced changes to gene expression

We are recruiting an early career researcher for a career development position of 1 year within the ERC-funded project “Hybridization derived novel patterns of gene expression”.
This project broadly addresses the role of gene expression in how novel, potentially adaptive, variation can arise from hybridization. While the specific questions that will be addressed will be developed in discussion with the recruited candidate and the team, the main question of the project is the extent to which alterations to chromatin distribution and methylation arise, and how they contribute to altered patterns of gene expression. We have assembled a unique data set of three independent lineages of Italian sparrow Passer italiae and their parental species, with data on gene expression and tissue samples from ca 10 individuals of each sex common garden populations of these, and are now extracting these samples.
The researcher will work in a collaborative lab performing analyses of gene expression, ATACseq data, and will analyze and synthesize and write up the work for publication and work closely with the HybridExpress team consisting of a lab manager, a PhD-student and a post doc.
There will be opportunities for mentorship. The project is led by Senior Lecturer Anna Runemark, and set within the SPeciation, Adaptation and Co-Evolution lab in the biodiversity and evolution division.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in Biomedical Engineering with a focus on synchrotron imaging to explore tendon developmental biomechanics and mechanobiology

Within AMBER your work will include clinical and biomedical projects. It will also include technique development work aimed at combining imaging techniques and data analysis to provide a more integrated picture of life processes in the context of health and disease. To be a postdoc fellow at the AMBER programme you will get unprecedented medical, biological, and methodological capabilities, with a profound potential impact for Europe’s next generation of research and researchers. When you have completed the AMBER programme you will be extraordinarily well equipped to further your career in academia, at infrastructures, in the health and MedTech sectors, and beyond.

Tendons like most musculoskeletal tissues are mechanosensitive, meaning that they adapt to the local mechanical loading. We have earlier shown that the collagen fiber structure is affected by unloading of the tendon in a small animal model. However, small animal model findings are not always transferable to larger mammals or humans.  The goal for the post-doc is to investigate how the tendon structure and mechanical function develops over time, and how this development is affected by lack of mechanical stimulation, using a large animal model. The technical goal includes to develop, perform and analyse data from high resolution experimental imaging of large animal tendon tissue, using mainly synchrotron phase contrast X-ray tomography, but also other imaging modalities and linking it to mechanical and compositional properties. Fundamental understanding of these relationships may benefit development of better rehabilitation strategies to promote tendon repair after rupture.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher in phage-bacteria interactions

Bacteria are constantly predated by viruses, bacteriophages. To resist predation, bacteria employ numerous antiphage defence systems, with the most famous being CRISPR-Cas. In our lab we discover new systems with bioinformatics, validate them in microbiological assays and then characterise the mechanisms of defence on the molecular level. Currently the lab is working on many (>10) novel, as-yet-unpublished antiphage defence systems. The focus of this project would be to uncover their molecular workings through integrated structure-functional approach combining phage microbiology, biochemistry and structural biology. The project is supervised by Vasili Hauryliuk (PI) as well as Gemma Atkinson (co-PI, structural bioinformatics, Lund University) and Pontus Gourdon (co-PI, cryo-EM, Lund University and University of Copenhagen).

(09) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Pstdoctoral fellow within molecular Neuroanatomy

Our research group is working towards unravelling the neurobiology behind psychiatric symptoms in neurodegenerative diseases, primarily Parkinson’s disease, with a focus on emotions, including depression. The subthalamic nucleus (STN), which regulates motor function, cognition, and emotions, exhibits pathology in Parkinson’s disease, and is an important target area for the treatment of the disease´s motor symptoms with Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). Our goal is to find out how the STN functions in the normal state and in Parkinson’s models, to find out what goes wrong in Parkinson’s disease, and how Parkinson’s symptoms can be better treated with precision stimulation, such as DBS. We are particularly interested in the neuropsychiatric symptom picture in Parkinson’s disease and in developing better treatment. We have a specific interest in the anatomical-functional association within the STN, and in structures in its vicinity.

In order to obtain high neuroanatomical selectivity, we use transgenic mice with a focus on the Cre-Lox system, and specific promoters as well as viral vectors for optogenetic control of neuronal activity and models of Parkinson’s disease. This postdoc project will investigate how different compositions of neurons in the relevant brain area respond to different types of stimulation, how this affects behavior and signaling in neuronal circuits. By comparing spatially selective signaling, for example through optogenetics, with the clinical treatment method DBS, the goal is to identify the optimal neurons for therapeutical stimulation leading to alleviation of non-motor symptoms, such as depression.

(11) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in in Sustainable Food Logistics and Packaging

The postdoctoral position focuses on developing sustainable and resilient food logistics and packaging systems within the framework of Industry 5.0, emphasising the shift towards circular food production in Sweden. Specifically, the postdoctoral researcher will contribute to exploring how logistics and packaging innovations can improve food system preparedness and sustainability. The work integrates multiple tensions: the need for resilience versus cost-efficiency in supply chains; centralised versus decentralised storage and distribution; and short-term food security needs versus long-term circularity and environmental goals.

This shift is vital given Sweden’s current vulnerability in food logistics—marked by high import dependency, lean inventories, and fragile global supply chains. By focusing on circular food logistics—especially for grains, beans, and peas—this research will critically investigate how digitalisation, collaborative risk-sharing strategies, and energy-efficient logistics solutions can enhance food system performance during both normal and crisis conditions. It will also address packaging innovations that improve food safety, reduce microbial risks, and extend shelf-life, thereby aligning logistics design with food quality and crisis readiness.

The position is embedded within a strong interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral environment involving academic partners from Lund University’s Divisions of Packaging Logistics and Engineering Logistics, and industrial collaborators. Together, these actors will co-develop frameworks for logistics-optimised food storage, national capacity mapping, and emergency response strategies to ensure resilient, circular, and safe food systems.

The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with supervisors Professor Fredrik Nilsson and Dr Sandeep Jagtap, as well as with industry stakeholders, to generate impactful insights at the intersection of logistics, circular economy, and food systems resilience. This role forms part of a broader interdisciplinary effort to position Lund University as a leader in sustainable and crisis-prepared food systems research.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral fellow in Aquatic ecology

The situation of cod stocks in all Swedish waters is critical. Despite several years of closed fishery, there has been no significant improvement in cod stock status. has been closed several years without any improvements of the status. The decline is likely due to a combination of historical overfishing, degraded environmental conditions, and increased populations of cod predators such as seals and cormorants.

One possible measure to support cod recovery, particularly the survival of large reproductively important individuals, is the use of artificial reefs. These structures provide shelter from predators and may enhance local resource availability. The Hanö cod reef association has placed 35 artificial reefs near the island of Hanö. The area has been monitored with respect to physical conditions and biological activity, using video recordings from both reef sites and comparable control areas. Within this position as post-doc you will be responsible for developing tools of analysing the recordings already executed as well as collecting new recordings. The development of analytical tools will be performed in co-operation with InfraVis (https://infravis.se), which are experts on machine learning solutions and data visualisation. In addition will some cod individuals be tagged, and their behaviour be monitored using acoustic telemetry. The cod behaviour could also be correlated with continuous monitoring of different environmental variables.

As a post doc you will have the opportunity to shape the research direction in collaboration with the research group, with members representing Marint centrum, Simrishamn, Department of Geology at Lund university, Swedish university of agricultural sciences and Hanö cod reef association. You will be affiliated with the Unit for Functional Ecology at the Department of Biology, Lund university (https://www.biology.lu.se/research/functional-ecology).

(20) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position on transthyretin amyloid formation using X-rays, neutrons and electron microscopy

A motivated postdoctoral researcher is sought to work on the molecular mechanisms underlying amyloid formation from the protein transthyretin. Transthyretin normally functions as a transporter protein of thyroxine and retinol-binding protein (RBP) in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid. However the folded protein is prone to instability and the formation of amyloid fibrils in tissues such as the heart and nervous system, invariably with fatal consequences. The project will focus on probing the molecular factors underlying this instability (see for example https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-019-08609-z/), and in understanding the pathway that link the functional and pathological forms of the protein. Techniques involved will include X-ray and neutron crystallography, small-angle scattering (SAXS & SANS), and cryo-EM.

The work will involve the study of wild-type TTR (which is intrinsically amyloidogenic) and also a range of other mutants that are typically associated with early onset amyloidosis in various tissues. The work may involve comparative studies with amyloid material derived from ex vivo sources.
