The selected candidate will be stationed at the University of Edinburgh Business School and collaborate closely with the project leaders. The candidate will develop a new model that merges the Merton approach to measure corporate risk with machine learning techniques, such as complex neural network infrastructure. Responsibilities include data analysis, developing models, and contributing to the dissemination and publication of research findings. The role also involves working in tandem with Nick Kordowski’s team in the Fixed Income division at Abrdn. A Wellcome Trust CDA funded postdoctoral position is available in the lab of Dr. Paul Donlin-Asp (https://www.donlin-asp-lab.com/). This project aims to understand how neurons transport RNA and decide when/where they are translated into protein. This project will use a combination of imaging of mRNA and local protein synthesis to track where and when mRNAs are made available for local protein synthesis. We will couple these data with advanced proteomics to understand the regulatory network of proteins controlling how these mRNAs move and when they are read into protein. We are seeking a post-doctoral research fellow to work on a Leverhulme-funded interdisciplinary project titled ‘A History of Hurt Feelings and the Law’. The project is a collaboration between Prof Chloë Kennedy (University of Edinburgh), Prof Katie Barclay (Macquarie University) and Dr Alice Krzanich (University of Aberdeen). Using Scotland as a case study, the project team will examine how courts have identified, defined and provided redress for injured ‘feelings’ across the modern period (c. 1750-the present). The post-holder will work on the medical dimensions of this project, conducting original historical research into the development of the psychological and psychiatric sciences and the interaction between medical and legal knowledges and expertise in constructing conceptions of emotions and emotional injuries. This post will be part of the Centre for AI for Assistive Autonomy, a mission-driven research centre established using a UKRI Turing AI World Leading Researcher Fellowship awarded to Prof Subramanian Ramamoorthy. 

The post-holder will be the lead researcher anchoring laboratory activities in the area of human-robot interaction for assistance with activities of daily living. This represents one of the main application themes within the centre, alongside task level autonomy in surgical robotics and autonomous vehicles. This work benefits from parallel work of a foundations team, whose focus will be on fundamental investigations into generative modelling of the full stack of human behaviour, from sensorimotor control to higher level cognitive decision making, to enable the development of person-centred and teachable autonomous systems.

The School of Informatics is seeking a Research Associate in Human-Centred Artificial Intelligence for Assistive Technology. This post will be part of the Centre for AI for Assistive Autonomy, a mission-driven research centre established using a UKRI Turing AI World Leading Researcher Fellowship awarded to Prof Subramanian Ramamoorthy. 

The central purpose of the job is to carry out research on AI for surgical robotics, covering two parallel concerns. Firstly, the post holder will develop methods to understand human surgical skill. Drawing on data from novel simulation and sensing systems, and other data available from partners (e.g. Brennan and collaborators), the post holder will develop methods for skill quantification. This involves the creative application of robot learning methods, including learning from demonstration and inverse optimal control methods, to characterise human expert skills in increasingly more complex surgical task domains. Secondly, building on this, the post holder will devise methods for task level autonomy in surgical robotics.

We are looking for a highly motivated postdoc candidate to lead an innovative research project that integrates kinetochore biology with neuroscience. This project builds on the pioneering discoveries made by the Cheerambathur Lab on the novel roles of kinetochore proteins in brain development and explores how the chromosome segregation machinery is reutilized in post-mitotic neurons to construct and repair neural circuits.

Our research shows that kinetochore proteins, traditionally known for segregating chromosomes during cell division, serve as critical cytoplasmic regulators of neuronal cytoskeleton — impacting dendrite patterning, axonal guidance and synaptogenesis, and neuronal regeneration (Cheerambathur et al., Ouzounidis et al., Domingos et al.). By leveraging the well-established neuronal model, C. elegans as a primary discovery tool and translating key findings to more complex vertebrate neural circuits, we aim to uncover the unknown functions of kinetochores in these major neuronal processes.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in galactic archaeology to work with Prof. Sergey Koposov at the Institute for Astronomy, which is part of the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh. The aim is to work on the DESI Milky Way Survey data and specifically use the measurements of radial velocities and abundances to constrain the Milky Way accretion history and the dark matter distribution in the Galaxy. Applicants with a strong background in galactic archaeology, galactic dynamics, stellar streams, stellar chemistry being able to deal with large datasets, including spectroscopic ones would be a particular advantage.
