Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral position in Distributed Learning and Optimization
Next generation of networked cyber-physical systems will support a number of application domains e.g. connected autonomous vehicular networks and collaborative robotics in smart factories. With the advent of massive machine-to-machine communication and IoT networks, huge volumes of data can be collected and processed with low latency through edge computing facilities. Distributed machine learning enables cross-device collaborative learning without exchanging raw data, ensuring privacy and reducing communication cost. Learning over wireless networks poses significant challenges due to limited communication bandwidth and channel variability, limited computational resources at the IoT devices, the heterogeneous nature of distributed data, and also randomly time-varying network topologies. In this project, the aim is to design and analyze fast, low-complexity communication-efficient distributed learning and optimization algorithms that are adaptive to the constraints posed by the underlying wireless networks.
The nature of this project is multi-disciplinary, requiring tools from distributed optimization and control, wireless communications and networks, signal processing, statistical machine learning and random matrix theory. This project will advance the state-of-the-art in distributed learning over wireless networks, and also contribute to design guidelines for practical learning algorithms.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in Organic photochemistry, directed towards sustainable aviation fuels
The research area of the postdoctoral project is development of novel approaches for production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs), where our focus is on a combined photobiological-photochemical approach to monoterpenoids reported in Green Chem., 2022, 24, 9602-9619. The first step in the approach is production of isoprene by photosynthetic cyanobacteria directly from CO2 as carbon source and solar light as energy source, and the second step is the photochemical dimerization of isoprene into monoterpenoids, which after hydrogenation is suitable as SAFs. The postdoctoral fellow should take part in (i) the development of photocatalyst systems, (ii) transfer this know-how to the construction of a pilot-scale photoreactor, and (iii) seek an optimal process for the transfer of isoprene from the photobiological to the photochemical reactor. The project will be carried out within the ALFAFUELS project funded by the European Commission. Within this consortium we collaborate with international research groups as well as applied research institutes and industry partners.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in bioinformatics & spatial modeling using metabarcoding data
Metabarcoding of environmental DNA samples provides unprecedented opportunities for biodiversity research, as it offers comprehensive biodiversity inventories of a given site across the whole tree of life. Despite some existing methodological limitations leading to biases in species detection, these data represent a true revolution in biodiversity assessments, as for the first time we are able to detect the large hidden diversity of undescribed and taxonomically inconspicuous species, making up more than 80% of all species on this planet. In this project we will harness the potential of these data and utilize them in traditional statistical models for species distribution modeling and modeling of species richness. We will also explore the potential of new deep learning approaches, building up on custom models developed in our previous and ongoing research at the Biodiversity Data Lab.

(17) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in correlation spectroscopy
Arrays of nanoscale magnetic elements, referred to as mesospins, provide a versatile platform for creating customized magnetic metamaterials. Their equilibrium dynamics is intricately linked to mesospin shape and dimensionality. Artificial spin ice structures are a category of magnetic metamaterials, commanding considerable attention due to their capacity to mimic quantum spin liquids and ices at the mesoscale. In these engineered spin ice materials, magnetic nano-islands effectively function as giant spins, exhibiting fluctuating behavior. The interactions between these islands can be precisely manipulated through lithographic techniques. The research project will primarily focus on the measurement on nanoscale dynamics in, magnetic metamaterials using resonant XPCS at the dichroic L2,3-edges of 3d-transition metals in the soft X-ray range (Soft-XPCS).
Soft-XPCS will delve into the correlated fluctuations within such metamaterials. Such fluctuations occur collectively in the arrays making up the magnetic metamaterials but also within mesospins. The unprecedented access to nanosecond dynamics enables resolvng these intra-particle excitations.

About Uppsala University, Sweden –Official Website
Uppsala University is a research university in Uppsala, Sweden. Founded in 1477, it is the oldest university in Sweden and all of the Nordic countries still in operation. It has ranked among the world’s 100 best universities in several high-profile international rankings during recent years. The university uses “Gratiae veritas naturae” as its motto and embraces natural sciences.
The university rose to pronounced significance during the rise of Sweden as a great power at the end of the 16th century and was then given a relative financial stability with the large donation of King Gustavus Adolphus in the early 17th century. Uppsala also has an important historical place in Swedish national culture, identity and for the Swedish establishment: in historiography, literature, politics, and music. Many aspects of Swedish academic culture in general, such as the white student cap, originated in Uppsala. It shares some peculiarities, such as the student nation system, with Lund University and the University of Helsinki.
Uppsala belongs to the Coimbra Group of European universities and to the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities. The university has nine faculties distributed over three “disciplinary domains”. It has about 44,000 registered students and 2,300 doctoral students. It has a teaching staff of roughly 1,800 (part-time and full-time) out of a total of 6,900 employees. Twenty-eight per cent of the 716 professors at the university are women. Of its turnover of SEK 6.6 billion (approx. USD 775 million) in 2016, 29% was spent on education at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, while 70% was spent on research and research programs.
Architecturally, Uppsala University has traditionally had a strong presence in Fjärdingen, the neighbourhood around the cathedral on the western side of the River Fyris. Despite some more contemporary building developments further away from the centre, Uppsala’s historic centre continues to be dominated by the presence of the university.
