PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Novel Method for the Printing of Hydrogel and Hydrogel Composites – DTU Construct
Three-dimensional (3D) printing of hydrogels is now an attractive area of research due to its capability to fabricate intricate, complex and customized structures that can support cell adhesion and promote cell infiltration for tissue engineering. It has the potential to have extensive use in advanced medical applications such as in implants, scaffolds, biobots, muscles, etc. One limiting factor for the widespread application of hydrogel for biomedical applications is the lack of mechanical stability of hydrogel. The mechanical strength of hydrogel is not as high as load-bearing tissues or as required by the aforementioned applications. One potential way to overcome this problem is to create composite structures having hydrogel as matrix material combined with reinforcing agents. Moreover, to mimic the behavior of living tissues, self-healing or self-repairing capability of hydrogel materials should be developed.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in the design, synthesis and properties of large-scale nanowire lattices – DTU Energy
Usually, nanoscale engineering using state-of-the-art semiconductor processing starts with a crystal wafer which is then shaped using lithography, etching, milling, or metal sputtering to achieve the desired shape and functionality. While this approach is powerful and flexible the processes leave the crystals damaged and uncontrolled at the nano scale. For some purposes such imperfections are disastrous. In contrast, when crystals are growing, atoms can self-assemble into perfect atomic arrangement, and in recent years, new techniques have been developed which use semiconductor processing to direct subsequent crystal growth, thus enabling design of structures with atomic uniformity. This PhD project joins an ongoing effort exploring this approach for design ultra-uniform lattices of nanoscale semiconductor wires grown by molecular beam epitaxy using “selective area growth”. As a second path we are investigating the possibilities of using electrostatically induced electron systems in undoped semiconductor heterostructures to avoid the disorder associated with conventional doping. The overall aim is to realize macroscopic meta-crystals with properties which combine those of the host crystal and those of the designed “super”-lattice. This provides an exciting route for designing material properties and the overall aim of this project is to design and study the band structure of the superlattices and artificially induced electron correlations as encoded in the Hubbard model.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Scholarships (2) in Computer Vision with Deep Learning for Human-Machine Collaboration – DTU Compute
Learning visual recognition models requires huge amounts of data, especially when relying on data-hungry deep neural networks. These data need to be manually and passively annotated by humans. This labeling procedure is one of the most important steps in a machine learning pipeline and is tedious, expensive, and susceptible to noise leading to erroneous labels. Our goal is to establish a deeper human-machine collaboration for all stages of the learning pipeline via two PhD projects:
- Project A: Human-machine labeling. In this project, you will first develop an active labeling and learning scheme where each step of the learning procedure is actively assisted by a learning algorithm. Then, you will advance the capabilities of current labeling schemes towards a deeper human-machine collaboration. This PhD project will be co-supervised by Associate Professor Dimitrios Papadopoulos (DTU) and Professor Serge Belongie (KU).
- Project B: Multimodal labeling and learning. The goal of this project is to leverage information from different modalities that naturally occur near web images to assist the image annotation. You will develop state-of-the-art multimodal models for self-supervision with human-in-the-loop text supervision. This PhD project will be supervised by Associate Professor Dimitrios Papadopoulos (DTU).

Blood is crucial for our survival and the only way to substitute for blood loss occurring during accidents or surgery is by using blood from donors. However, blood transfusions have some limitations and risks: before blood can be transfused, there is a need for typing and matching due to the different blood groups causing fatal delays in emergency situations. Also, blood has a short storage lifetime, which makes it impossible to create large blood supplies to be used in acute disasters such as earthquakes or plane accidents. Furthermore, blood transfusions can help spread new viral infections, like it happened with HIV in the 80s.
