(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position on aging of lithium-ion batteries with silicon-graphite anodes
Your task is to study the influence of various operating parameters such as formation protocol, voltage range, applied pressure, temperature, etc. on the cycling stability of lithium-ion batteries based on silicon-graphite anodes. Post-mortem analysis using techniques such as electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy will be an important aspect of your work to understand how different operating conditions influence cell aging.
Postdoc summary/title: Scientist or PostDoc for environmental performance assessment
In line with Empa’s mission, the Technology and Society Laboratory (TSL) creates and transfers knowledge to support the transition to a more sustainability society. In particular, TSL analyses novel materials and emerging technology applications with a focus on associated material and energy stocks and flows, and evaluates them with regard to both natural environment and societal constraints.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in the area of X-ray Diffraction and Scattering
The Center for X-ray Analytics develops X-ray methodologies for understanding materials structure in life- and materials science. Our core activities in the development X-ray diffraction and scattering methods relate with the evaluation of the structure – property relationships. In the frame of an industrial project interfacing research and industrial needs, we are looking for a postdoc holding a PhD in X-ray analytical methods, preferably related to investigating total scattering methods for only partially crystalline materials systems. The working place will be Dübendorf / Zurich.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: 24 month postdoc / scientist Mid-IR laser absorption spectroscopy for drone-based measurements of ship emissions
The project aims at the development and field application of a high-precision, miniaturized mid-IR spectrometer. You will leverage on our previous work for drone based methane measurement to design a multi-species, lightweight instrument that can be carried by UAVs to quantify the emissions of large ship engines off-shore and in the harbour. This involves instrumental developments in the laboratory and field campaigns, both in close collaboration with our partners Alpes Lasers, ALTUS LSA and METIS Baltic.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: 2-year Postdoc Position on Atmospheric Deposition of Tyre Wear Particles
Environmental pollution by tyre wear and microplastics in general is an issue of growing concern. Tyre wear particles are found in various environmental compartments such as aquatic systems and soils. Their detection far from emission areas indicates that atmospheric transport and deposition are significant processes for the large-scale distribution of tyre wear.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position on high-temperature sodium-zinc chloride batteries
Your task is to develop and characterize next-generation cathodes for high-temperature sodium-zinc chloride battery cells with molten sodium anode. For this, you adopt commercially available materials and concepts where appropriate, and apply latest research findings to improve state-of-the-art cell components. Using a planar high-temperature cell platform developed by our group in previous projects, you assemble battery cells and cycle them at temperatures up to 300 °C. Apart from a detailed electrochemical characterization, ex-situ techniques such as conductivity measurements of components, SEM, XRD, etc. will be important aspects of your work.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position on liquid electrolytes for high-voltage lithium-ion batteries
Our labs are fully equipped for electrolyte development and testing. State-of-the-art facilities include synthesis labs with fume hoods, Schlenk lines, rotary evaporator, temperature-dependent viscosity, conductivity, and density analysis, thermal analysis (TGA, DSC), Raman and FTIR spectrometers, glove boxes, facilities to assemble various cell types including coin cells, pouch cells, and three-electrode cells, electrochemical characterization including battery cyclers, impedance spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometers (including operando cells), etc. Access to NMR (including PFG-NMR), elemental analysis (CHN, ICP-OES, etc.), advanced electron microscopy facilities (SEM, TEM) and surface analytical tools (XPS, ToF-SIMS) is also available.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: 3 – 4 year postdoc / scientist position on N2O emissions and isotopic fingerprints from agricultural soils
The project aims at the validation and implementation of cavity ring-down spectroscopy to determine N2O emissions and isotopic fingerprints from agricultural soils. Your activities will build on our previous and ongoing achievements in N2O isotope analysis to achieve outstanding accuracy, automation and high sample throughput. You will perform N2O flux and isotope observations at agricultural sites to validate biogeochemical soil models and upscale observations that can then be compared to national inventories. Your developments are key contributions to the European metrology project “quantiAGREMI” and the Horizon Europe project “PARIS”. Together with leading scientists you will create new methodologies for the attribution and quantification of emission processes.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in the field of carbon-based quantum materials.
Within a large-scale project, we aim at developing carbon-based quantum materials for next-generation quantum technologies, with a strong focus on atomically precise graphene nanoribbons (GNRs). Within this project, you will work on the development of gate-tunable graphene nanoribbon devices and their characterization by Raman spectroscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning probe microscopy and spectroscopy.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position on modelling the implications from a transition to net-zero on air quality
Within this initiative, we will study the impact of a transition to net-zero on air quality levels in Europe and Switzerland using the atmospheric chemistry and transport model ICON-ART. We will develop scenarios and emission inputs for the years 2030 and 2050, consistent with Switzerland’s energy strategy and European projections. We will then study the corresponding impacts on air quality with a focus on ozone and reactive nitrogen compounds, which are expected to change significantly in response to the electrification of mobility and other mitigation measures.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doc in 3D printing of polymers
to develop new polymeric resins for both SLA and DLP 3D printing. Your responsibilities will involve developing new transparent and non-transparent polymeric formulas with long shelf life, and for improved mechanical properties including tensile strength and elongation at failure. In addition, the processing will need to be optimized to 3D print both high specification parts with micro features as well as large structures and components. You will also have hands on experience to characterize the properties of the resins, and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the printed components.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position on electrolytes for high-voltage lithium-ion batteries
The research project focuses on developing electrolytes for high-voltage lithium-ion batteries within an InnoSuisse project in collaboration with a Swiss industrial partner. Your tasks include electrolyte formulation, characterization, and assessment in lithium-ion batteries with a special focus on solid electrolyte interphase formation on anode and cathode. Our labs are fully equipped for battery fabrication and testing. State-of-the-art facilities include synthesis labs with fume hoods, gloveboxes, various synthesis reactors and furnaces, sputtering, evaporation, and atomic layer deposition facilities, X-ray diffractometers, Raman and FTIR spectrometers, electrochemical characterization including impedance spectroscopy, mass spectrometers, gas and liquid chromatographers, thermogravimetric analyzer, various equipment for the characterization of electrolytes, etc. Access to advanced electron microscopy and X-ray facilities is also available.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: 30 month postdoc / scientist position on CH4 clumped isotope analysis by mid-IR laser spectroscopy
The project aims at the development and application of high-precision mid-IR laser spectroscopy for the analysis of the rare doubly substituted isotopic species 13CH3D / 12CH2D2 in methane. You will leverage on our ongoing work in preconcentration / isotope analysis of CH4 to perform cutting-edge studies of process-derived and ambient methane. These developments form part of the European metrology project “isoMET” that involves twelve research groups that join forces to improve CH4 source attribution by isotope analysis.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher in electron microscopy of catalytic systems (a)
Funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, the primary goal of this project is to investigate real-world catalytic systems by analytical transmission electron microscopy. You will be responsible for innovative, experimental studies, including in-situ investigations of catalytic materials, comprising development and implementation of new experimental approaches and/or methods for data analysis. You will also coordinate collaborations with internal and external research groups. Simulations can be part of the research work.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc or Scientist in energy systems modelling
You are a highly motivated and dedicated candidate with a PhD degree in Energy, Mechanical, Chemical-, Environmental or Electrical engineering (or related field). You should have a profound and interdisciplinary knowledge of ongoing energy transition particularly multi-energy systems, energy markets/policies and energy conversion/storage technologies (in particular for Switzerland and the EU). Moreover, you have strong programming, modelling and data analysis skills in Python, Pyomo and R. Experience with geographical information systems (GIS) is a plus). Experience with the formulation and implementation of mathematical optimization problems is favorable. A good research and publication record is required. Additionally, experience with the development, acquisition and management of research projects is an advantage. The candidate should be proficient in English; good comprehension and oral skills in German are desirable. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: a Scientist or a PostDoc (Project ORDZeroPM)
OpenChemUses belongs to the Open Research Data initiative, with the aim to enable and engage the wide scientific and regulatory communities to work towards open FAIR data on the uses of chemicals and materials by developing and disseminating a “big-data” toolbox that address both existing and future use reporting. The ZeroPM project will establish an evidence-based multilevel framework to guide policy, technological innovation, and market incentives to minimize use, emissions and pollution of persistent and mobile substances to the environment. The overall goal of the work performed at Empa is to build databases of chemicals and materials on the global market towards better understanding of their uses and fate in the technosphere. The project implementation will be achieved in close collaboration with the project partners, including IBM Research Europe, the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute and the University of Luxembourg.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position for the development of magnetic multilayer systems for binary information storage and processing using chiral spin textures
