At Scripps Research, the Lotz Laboratory is studying mechanisms and treatments of intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) which affects a large population of older individuals and represents the major cause of back pain.  The research on disease mechanisms uses human spines and genetic mouse models to investigate changes in cells, genes and proteins that develop during the aging process and the development of IDD. These studies examine cell function, RNA expression patterns using RNA sequencing and single cell RNA sequencing. 

Postdoctoral Associate position is available immediately at The Scripps Research Institute in the laboratory of Dr. John Teijaro, whose lab is interested in studying the innate and adaptive immune response to acute and persistent viral infections. Immune suppressive environments during persistent/chronic viral infection prevent excessive immune pathology but also impede the ability of the immune system to eradicate infectious virus from the host. Conversely, excessive inflammation during acute viral infections can reduce viral loads but also lead to severe immune pathology and even death. The focus of the Teijaro Lab is understanding how immune suppressive and pathological environments are generated, maintained and reversed, with a specific focusing on how type 1 interferon (IFN-I) production and signaling regulates these two states. The Teijaro lab is looking at various viral infection models with respect to the above including: LCMV, Influenza, SARS-CoV2 and Measles virus.

The Briney Lab is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to join us in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at Scripps Research. We use a combination of advanced single cell multi-omics techniques and sophisticated computational tools to deeply explore the antibody response to emerging infectious diseases. We are looking for a highly motivated individual who will contribute to antibody discovery projects against a variety of viral targets, including Lassa, Ebola, HIV, SARS-CoV-2, influenza and others. The antibodies we discover have potential use as therapeutics or as templates for rational vaccine development. 

Postdoctoral position is available in Dr. Jiang Zhu’s laboratory for highly motivated candidates who are interested in vaccine development for diverse viral pathogens, such as SARS-CoV-2, HIV-1, RSV, Flu, HCV, Ebola/Marburg, ZIKV, and MERS-CoV. Salary is in the range of $65,000 to $70,000 depending on prior research experience and qualifications. Dr. Zhu holds a joint appointment in the Department of Integrative Structural and Computational Biology (ISCB) and the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at Scripps Research in La Jolla, CA (https://www.scripps.edu). Dr. Zhu’s laboratory combines structure-based antigen design, protein nanoparticle engineering, animal immunization, single-cell technologies, and immunological analyses to develop and evaluate next-generation vaccines. Currently, two vaccine candidates for SARS-CoV-2 and HIV-1 are under clinical development and expected to start phase-1 human trials in 2023. The genomics-oriented cell biology laboratory of Dr. William E. Balch in the Department of Molecular Medicine at Scripps Research has an opening for a candidate with interest in understanding and treating mono and polygenic disease driven by genetic diversity in the population. Successful candidates will contribute to development and application of novel approaches to assess impact of genetic diversity for different gene targets. Skill sets of interest include experience in tissue culture, familiarity with biochemical tools (SDS-PAGE, ELISA, protein assay) and familiarity of with molecular techniques including transfection with plasmids/siRNA for transient protein expression in cell-based  reporter systems. 

The research projects will focus on NK cell responses to infection and malignancy, using mice, humanized mice, and human specimens.

Project 1. To develop memory NK cell-based immunotherapies to prevent or cure HIV infection.  This work will be performed using in-house generated humanized mice with a competent immune system and human specimens.

Project 2. To develop NK cell-based immunotherapies to prevent or cure solid tumors. This work will be performed using genetically engineered lung cancer mouse models and in-house generated patient-derived xenograft models (lung, and pancreatic cancer).

Project 3. To understand NK cell responses to respiratory virus infection (mainly Influenza virus) in the context of innate and adaptive immune crosstalk and immune-therapeutics development. The work will be performed using mouse models of influenza virus infection and in vitro assays.

The Lippi lab at Scripps Research seeks a Postdoctoral Associate as part of a growing team of investigators studying how a class of non-coding RNAs, called microRNAs, instructs brain development. We have developed molecular tools to map and manipulate microRNA-target interactions in specific cell types of the brain. We are now recruiting researchers that want to apply these tools to understand microRNAs mechanisms establishing neuronal identity and wiring neural circuits. Dr. Ahmed H. Badran’s laboratory at Scripps Research seeks to hire 3-4 highly motivated Postdoctoral Associates to start in 2021-2022. The Badran Lab aims to address technical shortcomings in conserved cellular processes through innovative synthetic/chemical biology, directed evolution, genome editing and bioengineering approaches. A Postdoctoral Associate position is immediately available in the Immunology and Microbiology Department in the laboratory of Dr. Sumit K. Chanda as part of a multi-disciplinary program focused on using a systems-level understanding of innate immunity, immunology, and virus-host interactions. The successful candidate will join a team investigating mechanisms of virus-host interactions, with a focus on utilizing chemical biology and chemoproteomics tools to identify novel host-pathogen interactions that underlie viral infection and to develop novel therapeutic strategies to facilitate pandemic preparedness. Studies will focus on RNA viruses of pandemic potential, including influenza virus, coronavirus, flaviviruses, and filoviruses. The person filling this position will play an important intellectual, technical, and scientific role in leading projects. The candidate will also assist with the preparation of grant applications and manuscripts, and contribute to additional projects in the lab. (Position supported by NIH funding.)

A Postdoctoral Associate position is available in Dr. Lisa Racki’s Lab at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA (rackilab.org) for a highly motivated scientist interested in bacterial chromatin and the role of chromatin in regulating bacterial phages. Specifically, this project will use phage and phage-derived tools to characterize the organization, structure, and dynamics of bacterial chromatin in the opportunistic human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This project uses an integrative approach to study bacterial chromatin structure at multiple scales, from in vitro biochemistry, to quantitative single cell timelapse imaging using microfluidics, to macroscopic studies of biofilm communities.
