Postdoc summary/title: Researcher 2
We are seeking a Researcher interested in ocular biology to join the laboratory of Dr. Krish Kizhatil in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at The Ohio State University. We study glaucoma, a common ocular disease involving harmfully high intraocular pressure (IOP; pressure inside eye) and neural degeneration in the optic nerve and retina. Our goal is to find cures for glaucoma. Our strong interests include finding the molecules and mechanisms controlling normal intraocular pressure, the impact of age on these mechanisms. This includes molecular mechanisms controlling developmental and adult biology of structures controlling IOP the Schlemm’s canal and trabecular meshwork including mechanism by which neural control of IOP is accomplished including mechanotransduction and other cellular signaling pathways. In addition, new research will be initiated into finding resiliency factor to prevent neurodegeneration of the retinal ganglion cells. We are also interested in the role of transcription factors and other mutations in both ocular development and adult disease. We use an array of mouse models, genetic, viral, and physiologic approaches. The Kizhatil lab has also established collaborators at Columbian University, Duke University and Imperial College of London who are leaders in the field. We eventually hope to collaborate with physicians to translate our finding to the clinic.

The College of Nursing at The Ohio State University invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Scholar position working with Dr. Michelle Failla. Dr. Failla’s research focuses on understanding the role of social communication in pain responses and management. The Failla lab is interested in studying pain in populations with differences in social communication, across the lifespan, from autism spectrum disorder to Alzheimer’s Disease. We work to understand how altered neural processing of pain may contribute to differences in expression or experience of pain. We use a variety of techniques such as psychophysics, neuroimaging, behavioral testing, and big-data approaches to investigate responses to physical pain.
The Postdoctoral Scholar will contribute to ongoing projects in Dr. Failla’s lab. Currently funded projects focus on autistic adults to characterize pain responses across adulthood using pain psychophysics and neuroimaging. The candidate will also be invited to design and implement new projects that are in line with both their own and Dr. Failla’s research interests. Finally, they will have opportunities to analyze existing data, to author and co-author manuscripts, and to gain exposure to and mentorship on grant writing. For more information about Dr. Failla’s work, please visit: https://nursing.osu.edu/faculty-and-staff/michelle-failla and https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=P_oWfEgAAAAJ&hl=en.

About The Ohio State University, United States – Official Website
The Ohio State University, commonly Ohio State or OSU, is a public land-grant research university in Columbus, Ohio. The flagship of the University System of Ohio, it is considered a Public Ivy, and has been ranked by major institutional rankings as among the best public universities in the United States. Founded in 1870 as the state’s land-grant university and the ninth university in Ohio with the Morrill Act of 1862, Ohio State was originally known as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College and focused on various agricultural and mechanical disciplines but it developed into a comprehensive university under the direction of then-Governor and later U.S. president Rutherford B. Hayes, and in 1878 the Ohio General Assembly passed a law changing the name to “the Ohio State University” and broadening the scope of the university. Admission standards greatly tightened and became more selective throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
Ohio State’s political science department and faculty have greatly contributed to the construction and development of the constructivist and realist schools of international relations; a 2004 LSE study ranked the program as 1st among a public institution and 4th overall in the world. A member of the Association of American Universities, Ohio State is a leading producer of Fulbright Scholars, and is the only school in North America that offers an ABET-accredited undergraduate degree in welding engineering. The university’s endowment of $5.29 billion in 2020 is among the most in the world. Past and present alumni and faculty include 5 Nobel Prize laureates, 9 Rhodes Scholars, 7 Churchill Scholars, 1 Fields Medalist, 7 Pulitzer Prize winners, 64 Goldwater scholars, 6 U.S. Senators, 15 U.S. Representatives, and 104 Olympic medalists. It is classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity”. As of 2021, Ohio State has the most number of students in the United States who are in the 95th percentile or above on standardized testing of any public university.
