The appointed PDRA will contribute to an exciting new project which aims to combine existing survey data resources to create a new, harmonised multidimensional dataset concerning people’s relationships with nature across the whole of the UK, and use it to address priority questions for policy-makers. The PDRA will liaise with partner organisations to collate existing data sets, carry out data harmonisation work, use the harmonised dataset to examine engagement with green space across the UK, and share the results through journal articles, reports and presentations. The PDRA will also be responsible for data management, metadata production, dealing with quality issues and the final delivery of data for sharing or archiving, supported by the full project team. This programme of research will be conducted in collaboration with partners from the Australian National University and Natural England and has been funded by the UKRI through the ESRC Secondary Data Analysis Initiative.

This post is full-time (35 hours per week); however, we are open to considering flexible working patterns.  We are also open to considering requests for hybrid working (on a non-contractual basis) that combines a mix of remote and regular on-campus working.

We are looking for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to join Dr Ofer Busani’s research group in the School of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh.

The position is funded by Dr Busani’s ERC Starting Grant “UnivKPZ” and offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge projects in random growth models, the KPZ universality class, and probability theory. The successful candidate will work closely with Dr Busani and collaborators within the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences, a joint research centre between the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University.

Light teaching opportunities (e.g. undergraduate tutorials, project supervision) are available for candidates who wish to broaden their career development.

The project draws together a wide array of methods to investigate how creative reading/writing activities can enhance young peoples’ (aged 12–18) experience of poetry, translating those findings into academic outputs, advocacy initiatives, and the creation of a mobile reading/writing app intervention called ReWriter. The participatory research project will be coproduced with a small team of young person researchers who will inform the project, and will involve qualitative interviews with young people around the UK, workshops with follow-up questionnaires, and analysis of existing literacy-related research and data from partner organisations.

The post holder will be the central member of the literacy and co-production workstream, working closely with Project Lead Errington and with Research co-Lead Prof. Sarah McGeown to design and carry out one-on-one interviews and post-workshop group questionnaires and analyse resulting data. Crucially, the post holder will work with team members to organise and support coproduction sessions with the young person researcher team, sharing developments and findings with the team and encouraging their input on future directions.

In carrying out the role, the post holder will be encouraged to learn and develop new skills and methods, both qualitative and quantitative, share knowledge with and gain insights from the other workstreams and team members, collaborate with project partners, and engage with young person communities and academic researchers around the UK and abroad. The post holder will also receive bespoke skills training and career mentorship from research team-members and wider academic and non-academic networks to support both their work on the project and their long-term career goals.

This Research Associate (RA) position will contribute to the UQ4FM: Uncertainty Quantification for Flood Modelling within the Institute for Infrastructure and Environment at the University of Edinburgh, which is funded by EPSRC and in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Bristol and UKCEH.

This role is UE07 and is available on a fixed term basis until 28/02/2027 with potential for a further extension subject to funding.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in mathematical physics, within the School of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh. The post is available from 1st September 2026, for 36 months on a fixed-term, full-time contract. This position is supported by a ERC/UKRI Consolidator grant held by Tim Adamo. 

The Mathematical Physics group at the University of Edinburgh currently consists of: Tim Adamo, Sayantani Bhattacharyya, Tudor Dimofte, José Figueroa-O’Farrill, Jelle Hartong, James Lucietti, Bernd Schroers and Joan Simon, as well as eight postdoctoral researchers and multiple PhD students. We are looking to recruit and ambitious, creative and motivated postdoctoral research associate (PDRA) with structural biology and protein biophysics experience to join the Crosby Lab at the University of Edinburgh. 

You will join a focussed and friendly research team to work on a Wellcome-funded project on the molecular mechanisms by which circadian proteins interact to generate circadian rhythms in mammals, and how this is regulated by specific post-translational modifications. This project has the potential lead to exciting and significant discoveries into the fundamental biological processes underlying circadian rhythmicity.

This position is affiliated with the UKRI APRIL AI Hub that aspires to develop AI tools to accelerate innovation across semiconductor technologies, novel microchip designs and system architectures – leading to faster, cheaper, greener and overall, more power-efficient electronics. The post-holder will work closely with a team of talented researchers and the APRIL operations team to support the development of novel AI capabilities, tools and methodologies that can enhance the productivity of engineers in designing, developing and testing advanced electronic devices and systems. More specifically, the post-holder will be able to develop AI tools that can design and execute experiments in search of the best manufacturing parameter settings to create electron devices with optimum performance and yield; spanning from optimal “device recipe” prediction to automated testing and yield assessment.

The project NACS aims to explore new frontiers in computational counting and sampling, including developing new algorithms and analysis techniques. Typical tools and topics are Markov chains Monte Carlo, Lovasz local lemma, high dimensional expanders, geometry of polynomials, etc. The successful applicant will be generously supported by the project and will have the opportunity to collaborate with project partners.

We seek a postdoctoral research associate (PDRA) to join an interdisciplinary team investigating how ocean acidification will lead to habitat loss in cold-water coral ecosystems. The position is for 27-months through the NERC-funded grant on “Coralporosis of cold-water coral ecosystems – in silico reefs to model habitat loss”. The post holder will conduct acidification experiments on 3D printed coral ‘mini-reefs’ at the University of Edinburgh and St Abbs Marine Station to visualise and quantify the loss of habitat integrity in a variety of scenarios. The project will incorporate this data into existing models to create an in-silico reef to predict future habitat loss of these vulnerable marine ecosystems.

The School of Informatics is seeking a Senior Researcher to be employed to work within the Effect Handler Oriented Programming (EHOP) project. The focus will be on the continuing design, implementation, and evaluation of the WasmFX extension to WebAssembly. There will also be opportunities to engage with other aspects of the EHOP project.

WebAssembly (abbreviated Wasm) is a portable low-level bytecode, supported by all major web browsers. WasmFX is an extension of Wasm with effect handlers developed as part of the EHOP project. It provides a uniform target for empowering programming language implementers to directly support a range of first-class control features such as async/await, lightweight threads, and generators.

WasmFX has a full formal specification. It is in the process of standardisation by the WebAssembly Community Group (the de facto standardisation committee for WebAssembly). There are implementations in the official reference interpreter as well as the Wizard and Wasmtime runtimes. Development is also underway of an implementation in the Chrome web browser.

The post holder will be primarily responsible for systematically evaluating the effectiveness of WasmFX using Wasm engines with support for WasmFX (including Wizard and Wasmtime) as well as developing and evaluating backends for research and industrial-strength programming languages (including C, Kotlin, Links, and OCaml), by designing and carrying out appropriate benchmarks. They will work closely with the developers of these engines and languages, and this research will inform the future design of Wasm engines and WasmFX backends as well as the official Wasm standard.

Transcribed genes are thought to be privileged genomic regions protected from DNA damage and mutation by transcription-coupled repair processes. However, our recent work has demonstrated that transcription in human cells can enhance DNA damage, leading to at least one mutational signature in cancer (Reijns et al, Nature 2022), and has also been detected in ageing brains.  

This project will address how and why transcription-associated genome instability occurs in mammalian cells, its initiation and the processes shaping it. Using cellular and mouse model systems, the goal is to establish the role of transcription-induced damage in cancer, and other human diseases. It may also shed light on how DNA damage drives innate immune-mediated inflammation in Aicardi-Goutières syndrome. 

The post-holder will be part of a multidisciplinary team in the lab of Prof. Andrew Jackson, working in a cross-disciplinary environment that addresses both fundamental cellular processes and disease mechanisms. The research group is internationally diverse and strongly competitive consistently publishing in high-level journals including 5 papers published in Science and Nature in the last 10 years. The lab is embedded in the Institute of Genetics and Cancer, a highly collaborative and supportive environment.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to join our comparative oncology research group at the University of Edinburgh. The successful candidate will work with Professor Kelly Blacklock, Professor Liz Patton, and Dr Mark Stares. 

This position is funded by the Humanimal Trust as part of the GENOMICS: Gene Expression in Oral Melanoma for Integrated Cross-Species Stratification project.

The PDRA will lead experimental work integrating molecular, immunological, and histopathological analyses of canine and human oral melanoma samples. The role will focus on:

1. Generating, optimising, and validating a gene expression assay using canine and human oral melanoma tissue.
2. Linking tumour subtypes (assigned using RNA sequencing, the validated gene assay, and immunohistochemistry) to treatment outcomes in NHS patients.
