Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Modelling of emergent quantum phenomena in twisted van der Waals interfaces
Applications are invited for two Research Associate (RA) positions in theoretical condensed matter physics, focusing on modelling emergent quantum phenomena in twisted van der Waals (vdW) interfaces. Both positions are based in the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Manchester.
This research initiative aims to combine the power of first-principles modelling with advanced theoretical frameworks to establish new guiding principles for studying exotic quantum phases emerging at the interface of strongly correlated vdW heterostructures subject to mechanical distortions and external fields.
Both positions are available immediately for a period of up to 36 months. You should have, or be about to obtain, a PhD degree in physics, with a background in theoretical condensed matter physics (different backgrounds will also be given consideration, as long as there is a clear interest in the field of research). An excellent track record of publications, in low-dimensional materials and strongly correlated electronics systems, and/or field-theoretical methods with application to many-body systems and strong interactions, is required. You should also be capable of maintaining collaborations with experimental groups.
One RA should have a strong background in first-principles modelling of materials within density functional theory and beyond (GW, DMFT, etc.) and high-level programming skills. Working in collaboration with Dr Mohammad Saeed Bahramy, you will be responsible for performing high-throughput ab-initio calculations and deriving effective tight-binding models for a wide variety of vdW heterostructures. The primary focus will be on constructing realistic models for commensurate and twisted vdW interfaces and exploring their response to external fields and mechanical distortion.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Planetary Science
We seek candidates with an enthusiasm for undertaking studies of meteorites and their record of the early history of the Solar System. The goal of the project is to investigate the distribution of halogen elements in chondritic meteorites, in order to understand how volatile elements were distributed through early Solar System materials during the epoch of planet formation, ~4.6 billion years ago. Your role will be to conduct petrologic and geochemical analysis of chondritic meteorites and experimental analogues, using advanced electron beam, ion beam and other mass spectrometry techniques. You should be capable of working independently, collaborating with the research team, and presenting your results in talks and scientific publications, so excellent communication and organisational skills are essential.
You should have (or will soon obtain) a PhD (or equivalent) in Geology, Earth Sciences, Planetary Science or a related discipline, and a publication track record commensurate with your academic experience. You will have experience working with, and undertaking petrologic analysis of, geological or extra-terrestrial samples. A Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) position is available for a planetary scientist to undertake research into metal segregation processes on planetesimals in the early Solar System. The position is in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, under the direction of Prof Rhian Jones and in collaboration with Drs. Margherita Polacci and Romain Tartèse. You will join a leading research group of planetary scientists and isotope geochemists with expertise in the analysis and interpretation of extra-terrestrial materials. The post is funded by an STFC Small Awards Grant awarded to The University of Manchester.
We seek candidates with an enthusiasm for undertaking studies of meteorites and their record of the early history of the Solar System. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Synthetic f-element Chemistry
The role holder is expected to prepare and fully characterise coordination and organometallic complexes to a standard suitable for publication and to supervise other researchers in the laboratory. Candidates should have or expect to obtain a PhD qualification in organometallic, synthetic inorganic coordination chemistry, or a closely related field and possess experience in handling highly air-sensitive compounds with excellent knowledge of Schlenk line and glove box techniques.

We are looking for an experienced bioinformatician to integrate datasets in order to build a predictive Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell model. In particular, the work will aim at integrating different omics layers with genome scale metabolic modelling, and at developing new data-driven approaches to discover suitable manipulations to optimise target production outputs of CHO cell lines.
