PhD position summary/title: Two PhD candidates in integrated photonics with disordered materials for classical and quantum devices
These two PhD projects aim to realize bottom-up polycrystalline nonlinear assemblies of metal-oxides for PICs, which in fabrication complexity and functionalities will outperform devices constructed from bulk crystals or top-down thin films. Different kinds of bottom-up wet chemistry of metal-oxide nanocrystals will be explored starting from barium titanate and lithium niobate materials that are transparent from ultraviolet to mid-infrared, strongly nonlinear and electro-optic.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral thesis on the freezing of soft materials
This thesis topic is about understanding how damage occurs when soft, wet materials are frozen. Despite this being a very common problem, it is still surprisingly poorly understood. Most people think that freezing causes damage because water expands as it freezes. However, this effect plays a very minor role: if we replace water with a liquid that shrinks as it freezes, it still causes damage. This is a problem ranging from frost heave damage to infrastructure, to storing food in freezers, to cryopreservation, and to life at low temperatures.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Wireless System Design
The Integrated Information Processing (IIP) Group is part of the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at ETH Zurich. We carry out research in next-generation wireless communication systems, real-time signal processing applications, embedded machine learning, and very large-scale integration (VLSI) circuit and system design. What sets us apart from other research groups is that we jointly consider theory, algorithm development, architecture design, and hardware implementation aspects, which enables us to develop far more efficient solutions than conventional, atomistic design approaches that consider these aspects separately.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Positions in Rock Slope Analysis
This is an SNSF-funded project that aims to improve our understanding of the failure and runout of rock slopes. The project combines field data collection with numerical modelling to better understand the preparatory, triggering and runout phases of rock slope failure. One of the PhD projects will focus on rock slope damage accumulation, while the other will focus on rock avalanche runout. The results from these two projects will then be combined to infer information regarding the catastrophic failure of rock slopes.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position on solid-state chemistry of Li-ion solid-state conductors
Materials with superior Li-ion conductivity are required to advance electrochemical energy storage technologies such as those used for portable and mobility applications. Among the plethora of solid lithium electrolyte materials investigated, engineering fast lithium superionic conductors with a high electrochemical stability voltage window remains a formidable challenge. Recently, lithium solid electrolytes of the garnet family, such as Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) have gained attention in research community, exhibiting a substantial electrochemical operation window of 0 to 6 V vs. Li+/Li at high Li-ion conductivity of up to 1 mS cm−1 at RT. This PhD project is an exciting opportunity for the exploration of new LLZO Li-ion conducting inorganic ceramics, understanding of Li diffusion pathways, and the in-depth characterization of their chemical and electrochemical compatibility with metallic lithium. The project will focus on the understanding of the charge transport mechanisms in relation to structural aspects of novel LLZO chemistries and the development of new chemical approaches to the synthesis of LLZO. The project is intrinsically multi-disciplinary, bridging the gap between solid-state chemistry, chemistry of nanomaterials, and electrochemical energy storage and thus foster a highly stimulating research environment.

This means that the group does heavy technical work, from building low-level systems to analyzing hardware components. Examples of our research topics include hardware design security, microarchitectural security, and operating system security to name a few.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position at the intersection of social, cognitive, and organizational psychology
You will be involved in our larger research program on self-regulation, meta-motivational beliefs, and goal pursuit processes. Self-regulation refers to the process of monitoring and modulating one’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to reach desired end states, which is essential in many private and professional contexts. While we have expanded our knowledge about what promotes vs. impairs self-regulation, less is known about what people believe and understand about motivation. Our project investigates how differences in meta-motivational knowledge influence goal pursuit and leadership and whether an intervention that aims to train people’s meta-motivational knowledge can enhance leadership abilities (e.g., the quality of their recommendations and mentoring).

PhD position summary/title: PhD in field observations of ice nucleation in the North-Western Himalaya Region
In the troposphere, aerosol act as ice nucleating particles (INPs) and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) playing an important role in determining cloud formation, precipitation initiation, cloud properties, radiative transfer, tropospheric composition and chemical budgets. The North-Western Himalayas (NWH) has a unique climate and geographical setting with rich biodiversity and other natural resources. Despite the enormous significance, our understanding of key physical and chemical properties of aerosol particles over NWH is limited, limiting the accuracy of climate predictions in this region. ICE-CRUNCH will conduct a series of campaigns to measure key aerosol particle properties at Patnitop, a high-altitude location (33°5’N, 75°20’E, 2024 m asl) in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, NWH, India. The first phase of the project will include laboratory preparation for field measurements in India. The project’s objectives are: (i) To quantify the CCN and INP concentrations and physicochemical properties of aerosol particles at Patnitop in the NWH. (ii) To delineate the contributions of natural and anthropogenic aerosols to cloud formation at Patnitop in the NWH.

PhD position summary/title: Interdisciplinary PhD position in iPSC modelling of human hyperkinetic disorders
Dystonias encompass a heterogenous group of rare hyperkinetic movement disorders. Leveraging the advance in genetic technology, researchers have been able to elucidate the genetic cause of various monogenic forms of dystonia, revealing different pathogenic mechanisms. However, in most cases the genetic diagnosis fails, hindering the understanding of the pathogenesis, and, thereby, obviating accurate prognosis and the development of targeted therapeutic approaches. In this project, we aim to increase the diagnostic yield in dystonias and to study some variants in 3-D human iPSC-derived cellular models. We will employ clinical cohorts, large collections of samples, and patient-derived organoid models to probe dystonia features at the molecular level and to identify prognostic markers for a better treatment of these disorders.

PhD position summary/title: PhD for proxy development – lipid biomarkers
Currently, soils store a large fraction of the CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. However, whether they will continue to do so in the future is unclear, as soil fertility potentially limits the amount of primary production (carbon fixation) and belowground carbon storage. Current experimental approaches reveal a complex interaction between the above- and belowground ecosystem, and its chemical environment. A historical perspective, i.e. looking at past changes in soil fertility and carbon storage, can elucidate these processes on timescales that exceed experimental approaches (decades to millennia). While changes in atmospheric CO2 and climate are well constrained using a combination of direct measurements and estimates based on proxies, we currently have no methods to reconstruct soil fertility through time. In this project, you will develop biomarker lipid proxies that allow quantifying soil mineral fertility, building on current research that highlights the dependency of GDGT lipids on major soil exchangeable cations: free hydrogen, exchangeable calcium and exchangeable iron.
