PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Integrated Photonic Circuits for Quantum Number Generation
The PhD project focuses on QRNGs. Random numbers are a key requirement for cryptographic schemes, they allow Monte Carlo-based simulations, and fundamental physical tests, and they are essential for the initialization of machine learning algorithms. Current RNGs are based on deterministic algorithms, thus undermining cryptographic security, as well as generating bias in the training of machine-learning algorithms. Alternatively, to these approaches, the nature of quantum mechanics, which is intrinsically random, is perfect for achieving this task. This makes QRNGs, and especially integrated QRNGs on-chip, key components for future computing and communication equipment.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Chemistry and Immunology
A number of tumors are classified as “cold”, referring to the fact that there is minimal effector T cell infiltration at the tumor microenvironment (TME) or T cells are actively being suppressed by TME factors. This poses a particular problem when trying to treat these tumors by T cell-based therapies such as immune checkpoint inhibitors, since often patients do not respond, and their immune system remains only marginally reactive to the tumor. In this project, our hypothesis is that activation of a localized innate response will turn “cold” tumors into “hot” by initiating or rejuvenating existing T cell responses. The main aim is to synthesize a set of small organic compounds and investigate different delivery technologies to identify conditions that allow successful penetration of the skin in order to test their ability to induce immune responses and improve anti-tumor immunity. The project is based on our preliminary data suggesting that specific compounds can induce very strong innate cell activation upon skin delivery. The successful candidate will utilize synthetic and formulation chemistry as well as mouse immunology in synergy to achieve the goals of the of project.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Scholarship in Development of an Integrated Optimisation Model for Operating Urban Transit System (SmoothTrip)
Public transport (PT) contributes to various sustainable development goals (SDGs). The low share of PT mode is the primary challenge facing the existing PT sector. The mode share across EU28 countries has declined from an already low 17.6% in 2013 to 16.7% in 2017. Many European urban transit systems contain a combination of different PT modes. Strategically, there is a need for a decision tool to support the efficient planning and operation of the urban transit system in its entirety. However, currently, there is no holistic methodology to assist the decision-making regarding how to design an integrated operations plan for the urban transit system that contains multiple PT modes. Theoretically, this is a long-established sequential PT planning framework. More than 30 years after its establishment, the framework’s applicability is challenged by the rapid evolution of the modern urban transit system. The paradigm needs to be revised. Thereby, this project is developed with the aim of devising an integrated optimisation model and corresponding solution algorithm for the urban public transport system and demonstrating its performance by conducting case studies using the Copenhagen network data.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Scholarships in Biological Physics
Two fully funded PhD Scholarships, supervised by Associate Professor Kaare H. Jensen and co-supervised by Professor Henrik Bruus, are available starting in the fall of 2022:
Project 1: Enhanced diffusion in biologically inspired micro- and nanochannels (Experiment and theory)
Effective transport of small molecules across micro- and nanoscale pores is essential for future clean technologies. Many new concepts have emerged from the leading micro- and nanofabrication laboratories; however, a moon-shot jump in transport capacity has not emerged. Plant plasmodesmata, however, may hold clues to an entirely new pore design. These channels link adjacent plant cells and permit strongly enhanced particle currents. Yet, the physical processes underlying this striking bio-superconductivity are shrouded in mystery. In this project, you will resolve the mystery of plasmodesmata function by studying transport in biomimetic microfluidic devices. Moreover, you will explore applications of synthetic plasmodesmata to enhance chemical separation efficiency strongly.
Project 2: AI-assisted robotic extraction of cellular contents from plants (Experimental)
Most food consumed by humans is derived from plants. Greens are also becoming an increasingly important source of sophisticated carbohydrates, polymers, and pharmaceuticals. Obtaining pure high-value products, however, is a significant challenge because the compounds are localized to a few specialized cells. Therefore, traditional processing (from crop harvesting to chemical separation) is highly inefficient. In this project, you will develop an AI-assisted microrobot that targets individual cells. Moreover, you will explore applications to automated studies of plant stress response.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Synthesis of and phase behaviour in ABC-miktoarm star block copolymers
This PhD-project is an opportunity to become an expert in modern polymer synthesis and self-organization phenomena focusing on block copolymers. The PhD-project at DTU Chemistry is affiliated with the project Packing frustration in ABC starblock polymers and the focus of the project is the synthesis of the samples that are the core of the project. An ABC star block polymer is a material where polymer A, B, and C is connected to a common point. The synthesis of these materials is relatively complicated and the analysis required to make sure that we have synthesize the planned molecules is also involved. Once the materials are synthesized the properties and especially the structures formed are studied. We are interested in establishing understanding of the relation between molecular properties – polarity and conformation – and the structures of the bulk ABC-star material. In the beginning of the PhD focus will be entirely on synthesis and characterization of ABC stars but later in the project more personnel with focus on structures formed will be affiliated with the project

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Broadband MRI Radiofrequency Coil Development
The Electromagnetic Systems group at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) seeks a qualified candidate for a Ph.D. position in broadband MRI radiofrequency coil development. The project will be conducted in collaboration between DTU and the University of Queensland (UQ), Australia. A standard clinical MRI scanner consists of a strong electromagnet where radiofrequency transceiver with coils is used to image water molecules. Different biological tissues have different water content, therefore MRI is particularly suitable for medical diagnostics, though other applications also exist. MRI is a versatile technique and can image nuclei and molecules other than water, which opens up completely new possibilities. For example, by imaging carbon nuclei it is possible to follow metabolic processes, which can tell so much more about the function of the human body. Imaging other nuclei, however, requires additional new radio frequency coils.
