PhD position summary/title: Ph.D. position in Political Science focusing on Peace- and Conflict studies and women’s organizations as peacebuilders in illiberal post-war states
The doctoral student will be part of the project “Between liberal norms and authoritarian governance: women’s organizations as peacebuilders in illiberal post-war states” which is part of the Swedish Research Council’s research program on civil society. The project explores how women’s organizations in post-war states in Asia are negotiating their position between international peacebuilding agendas, which position them as key partners, and authoritarian state governance which constrain their agency. Given the important role that women’s organizations are often expected to play in creating a just and sustainable peace, it is important to better understand how their role as peacebuilders is conditioned by the combined impact of international peacebuilding norms and practices, and domestic authoritarian governance.

PhD position summary/title: PhD-student position in Medical Sciences with a research profile in diagnostic radiology
Cognitive decline compromises health for a great number of older adults. There is therefore a great need for more knowledge of the brain changes that underlie cognitive decline in aging. This project will employ brain imaging technique to assess neuroinflammation, cerebrovascular dysfunction, and the dopamine system, in relation to cognitive performance in healthy, older adults. The student will be part of data collection, handle and integrate large amounts of data from brain imaging, cognitive tests, questionnaires and blood-samples; and perform statistical analyses.

PhD position summary/title: 1-2 PhD students in Computing Science with focus on cloud native computing systems
The research, led by Professor Erik Elmroth, focuses on autonomous systems for managing resources and applications in environments based on cloud native technology (possibly serverless technology), i.e., the software landscape built around Kubernetes run by CNCF. The specific problem can to a large extent be adapted to the candidate’s background and interest, with the ambition of creating new knowledge about the design of autonomous management systems for future software systems designed specifically for execution in clouds. General objectives for autonomous management systems are typically to achieve high reliability, availability, performance, and efficiency with moderate manual effort.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Computing Science with focus on federated learning
Federated learning (FL) poses multiple challenges when applied to distributed, real-time robotic manipulation in the cloud. Multi-centric data heterogeneity observed during sensing, actuation, control and manipulation is a prime concern because data in classical FL settings is typically assumed to be independent and identically distributed (iid). In contrast, data from distributed robotic nodes operating under variations in environment, kinematics and sensing modality is not necessarily iid and raises questions concerning global model convergence for performance guarantees. This project aims to address the following challenges: (i) Developing high-quality local and global representation learning models cause multiple issues, including inconsistency of representation spaces, misalignment of representations, and incomplete representations. (ii) Achieving faster model adaptation through continual or lifelong learning, (iii) Preventing inter-nodes interference and inter-nodes knowledge transfer for irrelevant knowledge assimilation across models, (iii) Selective relearning of policies for unseen environments in cloud robotics systems.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Media and Communication Studies
Media and communications studies is an interdisciplinary field that deals with mediated communication in all its forms in traditional, as well as digital and social media. Our forms of communication are today in rapid change, due to a radically altered media landscape and the ongoing digitization of society and culture. These changes also alter perspectives on media history. At the department, around 20 researchers, teachers and PhD students in media and communication studies work with different types of research projects in areas such as media history, digital media, environmental, journalism and strategic communication. The research is extensive and varied and holds many different theoretical perspectives and empirical fields. A common denominator is a broad media concept rather than a focus on one particular medium, format or platform.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in learning theory for deep neural networks
Deep neural networks (DNNs) have revolutionized machine learning and artificial intelligence in the past few years. A mathematical theory of DNNs is rapidly developing to explain their success and guide the practitioners. Central to this theory is the generalization power of DNNs, which governs their performance on unseen data. Empirical risk minimization (ERM) is the prevalent theoretical framework for quantifying the generalization of DNNs, whereby the complexity of the hypothesis class of all DNNs with the same architecture is measured by its Rademacher complexity, VC dimension, or a similar notion of complexity.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in plant science with a focus on computational biology
Crops are exposed to herbivores and diseases. In a climate change scenario, the growth zones that have previously dictated agriculture are about to move northward, and we do not know the risk of biological stress factors we may face under the novel growth conditions. Simultaneously, EU-legislation is emphasizing the need to ban the use of pesticides and instead promote and develop integrated pest management strategies. The purpose of this project is to provide a foundation that prepares for changes in climate and agriculture in Sweden, emphasizing analyses of pests associated with potato and cereals. To predict colonization by and outbreaks of pests and diseases, solid crop system knowledge is required as well as are long time series that detail how climate affects the association between pests and crops. Surveillance systems that monitor risk of colonization and outbreak by selected pathogens and pests are usually also finetuned to capture a limited number of pests from a limited number of crops.
