PhD position summary/title: PhD position: New environmentally friendly electric motors for sustainable electrification
Dependency on rare earth metals is a challenge for future electrification as rare earth metals are considered critical raw materials. The aim of this project is to reduce the use of rare earth metals through the substitution to new magnets without, or with less, rare earth metals. The new magnets will be both weaker and easier to demagnetize than conventional magnets and therefore new simulation models need to be developed for the unique magnets, and implemented in simulation software for electric motor design. The new models will be more advanced than existing models and adapted for the new magnets and will therefore model the magnets more accurately. Furthermore, new innovative motor types must be developed that are adapted to the new magnets. Finally, an electric motor for electromobility will be designed, built and tested with the new magnets, thus demonstrating that the new magnets can substitute conventional rare earth magnets. Both the new magnets and the electric motor must be designed so that the magnets can be recycled to further contribute to sustainable electrification.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Automatic Control focusing on probabilistic methods for secure control
The project aims to develop theory and probabilistic methods for securing cyber-physical systems (CPSs) possessing learning and control capabilities: digital devices that learn from data they collect, and automatically decide how to best interact with the physical world over time.
Probabilistic methods are a natural way to deal with the uncertainty of physical systems and unintentional failures. However, attacks are not only probabilistic but can have strategic behaviors, tailored to causing harm while avoiding detection. Hence, it is critical to develop systematic approaches that integrate the probabilistic and strategic aspects of attacks in security analysis.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Historical geology and Palaeontology
This project will investigate the impacts of prolonged ocean warmth on phytoplankton composition, their biogeographical distribution and past productivity using scientific ocean drilling legacy data and drill-sites. You will study the fossil remains of marine algae from the Miocene Climatic Optimum (MCO; 16.9-14.7 Ma), the warmest climate state of the past 24 million years. Detailed studies of the MCO are important for constraining future warming scenarios, because it was a time interval of sustained global warmth under moderately high atmospheric CO2 levels (400-600 ppm) and a much weaker latitudinal temperature gradient than today. Biogenic sediment burial rates and nannofossil assemblage data will form the backbone of this project. Data will be mined from existing IODP datasets and new, high-resolution fossil time series will be produced at key sites from low- and high latitudes. Empirical results will be compared to global biogeochemical and climate model simulations of the MCO, run by colleagues at the University of Michigan, to mutually verify and validate our independent findings.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Molecular Ecology
Animals carry a multitude of microorganisms that collectively constitute their microbiome. These microbes are incredibly important for a host as they provide essential nutrients, train the immune system, and communicate with the host’s nervous system. This doctoral project aims to contribute to a better understanding of the microbiome’s role in wild animals, with a special focus on the Scandinavian wolverine, a key predator and scavenger in the Swedish fauna. The PhD student will analyze both the wolverine’s diet (prey animals) and gut microbiome in detail using modern DNA sequencing in the form of metabarcoding. The plan is to evaluate whether the diet can predict the composition and diversity of the microbiome, describe the variation observed within the species, and investigate how individuals living in zoos differ from their wild counterparts.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Machine Learning building on physical principles
There are two main strategies to derive and deduce models – either using theory-based first principles or data-driven approaches. This project aims to conduct basic research to create new tools for using these two modeling strategies in conjunction. Combining all prior knowledge, both in terms of available data and physical first principles, has the potential to result in better models than if we only had to rely on one of them. How physics should be combined with data-driven machine learning models depends on the problem and is an active and in many areas still underdeveloped research field.
By making machine learning models more physics-informed, they will also become more interpretable. This interpretability can transform these machine learning models from being black-box models into full-fledged scientific tools enabling new knowledge discoveries. Therefore, one aim of this project is to create machine learning models that not only can be leveraged by first principles, but in the future also can be used to enable new knowledge discoveries in the physical domains in which they are employed. Finally, the project also aims to use theories from physics to better understand why machine learning models are working, how they can be improved and quantify their fundamental limitations.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Machine Learning with a focus on generative models for nonlinear dynamics
This project focuses on developing theory and probabilistic methods for generative modelling of nonlinear dynamical systems. These dynamical models are essential in explaining and understanding the world around us since many phenomena evolve over time. When it comes to modeling nonlinear dynamics, flexible models have the potential to significantly enhance performance over simple ones. Over the past two years we have focused more on generative models in this context, where we foresee an interesting future and the successful candidate will contribute to this. A key topic here is to design deep neural network models with longer memories.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Machine Learning with a focus on Vision-Language Models
Vision-language models integrate computer vision and natural language processing techniques to process and generate information that combines both visual and textual modalities, enabling a more profound understanding of the content within images and videos. While vision-language models exhibit promising potential, they are currently in early stages of development. Effective integration of both modalities (vision and language), and aligning visual and text embeddings into a cohesive embedding space, continues to pose significant challenges.
In this project, the successful candidate will conduct basic research and methods development towards designing efficient vision-language models, exploring their applications in computer vision and analysing the consequential societal impact. Through our research, we aim to contribute significantly towards learning effective representations combining text, image and video data, potentially benefiting fields including surveillance and healthcare.

About Uppsala University, Sweden –Official Website
Uppsala University is a research university in Uppsala, Sweden. Founded in 1477, it is the oldest university in Sweden and all of the Nordic countries still in operation. It has ranked among the world’s 100 best universities in several high-profile international rankings during recent years. The university uses “Gratiae veritas naturae” as its motto and embraces natural sciences.
The university rose to pronounced significance during the rise of Sweden as a great power at the end of the 16th century and was then given a relative financial stability with the large donation of King Gustavus Adolphus in the early 17th century. Uppsala also has an important historical place in Swedish national culture, identity and for the Swedish establishment: in historiography, literature, politics, and music. Many aspects of Swedish academic culture in general, such as the white student cap, originated in Uppsala. It shares some peculiarities, such as the student nation system, with Lund University and the University of Helsinki.
Uppsala belongs to the Coimbra Group of European universities and to the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities. The university has nine faculties distributed over three “disciplinary domains”. It has about 44,000 registered students and 2,300 doctoral students. It has a teaching staff of roughly 1,800 (part-time and full-time) out of a total of 6,900 employees. Twenty-eight per cent of the 716 professors at the university are women. Of its turnover of SEK 6.6 billion (approx. USD 775 million) in 2016, 29% was spent on education at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, while 70% was spent on research and research programs.
Architecturally, Uppsala University has traditionally had a strong presence in Fjärdingen, the neighbourhood around the cathedral on the western side of the River Fyris. Despite some more contemporary building developments further away from the centre, Uppsala’s historic centre continues to be dominated by the presence of the university.
