Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral fellowship: Aquaporins in health and pathology
A highly motivated postdoctoral scientist is sought to work on a project designed to extend our understanding of the molecular basis of aquaporins (AQPs). AQPs are evolutionary conserved transmembrane proteins that are responsible for water and glycerol regulation in the human body, but also in many other organisms. Besides solute transport, AQPs have been shown to be involved in cellular signaling, cell migration, and cell-cell adhesion. For instance, AQPs are the main glycerol channel in the endocrine pancreas, mediating rapid flux of glycerol in β-cells and ultimately insulin secretion. Interestingly, it was also recently reported that AQPs in fruit flies have a central role in metabolism. The overall goal of the project is to study the structure of aquaporins using single particle cryo-EM and combine that with functional studies at the cellular level to resolve its mechanism of action. In addition, AQPs are therapeutic targets, thus the project will also include the development of putative AQP blockers, that can be used for treating diseases and/or to selectively kill insects expressing aquaporins. The project will have good access to state-of-the-art facilities within the medical, natural science and engineering faculties, as well as being located in close proximity to the nearby MAX IV synchrotron where also the Lund cryo-EM facility is situated.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher in phage-bacteria interactions
Bacteria are constantly predated by viruses, bacteriophages. To resist predation, bacteria employ numerous antiphage defence systems, with the most famous being CRISPR-Cas. In our lab we discover new systems with bioinformatics, validate them in microbiological assays and then characterise the mechanisms of defence on the molecular level. Currently the lab is working on many (>10) novel, as-yet-unpublished antiphage defence systems. The focus of this project would be to uncover their molecular workings through integrated structure-functional approach combining phage microbiology, biochemistry and structural biology. The project is supervised by Vasili Hauryliuk (PI) as well as Gemma Atkinson (co-PI, structural bioinformatics, Lund University) and Pontus Gourdon (co-PI, cryo-EM, Lund University and University of Copenhagen).

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PostDoc Bloch
MAX IV is looking for a postdoctoral researcher for an initial appointment of 2 years. As a member of the Bloch team, you will contribute to the beamline activities, working to ensure that user beamtimes are as productive as possible and that scientists feel excited when they receive an opportunity to come here. This requires from the beamline team a very strong focus on maintaining the performance of the equipment while simultaneously developing and commissioning new capabilities, new control and analysis software and new research projects. This often occurs in close collaboration with support functions at MAX-IV and external user groups.
As a postdoc at the beamline you will operate within and contribute to this environment, but your principle mandate will be to design and execute an independent research program, to which you will dedicate approximately 50% of your working time. You will have access to a fraction of the in-house beamtime allocation for this, and will also be expected to obtain additional time both at Bloch and elsewhere through conventional competitive beamtime applications.
In order to succeed in this role you will demonstrate motivation and independence. Specifically, you are requested to propose a specific research project that you will undertake in order to produce high quality publications, and you will work diligently to ensure that this project are followed through all the way to publication. While all such projects would be considered, the beamline is particularly interested in projects that would fit to one of the following developmental themes:
- Spin resolved ARPES: The spin-resolved endstation is still relatively new, and spin-ARPES is both technically and scientifically challenging. Bloch offers a combination of a 3D-VLEED detector, a small spot-size and access to arbitrary light polarization states of unusually high-purity. We welcome project plans that will lean heavily on some or all of these properties in order to develop and showcase the capabilities of our beamline to the wider community.
- vdW heterostructures: A commercial 2D heterostructure transfer system has recently been installed at the beamline. This will allow the deterministic fabrication of interesting sample structures from exfoliable materials (thin flakes, twisted graphene, vdW heterostructures). If such samples can be created at or above the 10um lateral scale, they become accessible to ARPES studies at Bloch. We welcome project plans that would capitalize on the availability of this equipment to showcase what is possible. These may involve applications to the neighbouring MAX-PEEM beamline or to nano-ARPES facilities elsewhere.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral fellow in Physical Chemistry
This project introduces silicon substrates with a switchable magnetic contrast layer (MCL) for polarised neutron reflectometry experiments (PNR) at solid/liquid interface to study soft matter surface layers. The structural and compositional information in a typical reflectometry experiment are obtained by collecting experimental data with different isotopic contrasts on the same sample. This approach is normally referred to as contrast matching, which can be achieved by using solvents with different isotopic contrast, e. g. different H2O/D2O ratio, and/or by selective deuteration of the molecules. However, some soft matter systems might be perturbed by this approach, or it might be difficult to implement, particularly in the case of biological samples. Here solid substrates with a MCL are an appealing alternative, as the magnetic contrast with the substrate can be used to partially recover the information on the sample structure. The project is part of a larger collaborative project, “Maximizing information content in neutron reflectivity data by optimised magnetic reference layers” between Linköping, Uppsala and Lund universities, Science and Technology Facilities Council, ISIS Neutron and Muon Sourcs, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in UK and European Spallation Source – ESS, financed by the Swedish Research Council.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in pharmaceutical technology, miniaturised spray-drying of pharmaceutical proteins
In the biopharmaceutical industry it is common practice to produce the pharmaceutical proteins, and then dry them for safe storage until the final products are manufactured. At present, lyophilization is the gold standard, but it would be beneficial to be able to dry these proteins using spray-drying. However, at the early development stages when only small quantities of the protein are available, current lab-scale spray-drying requires too much material for assessment of processability.
Therefore, this project will develop a miniaturized spray-dryer that emulates the lab- and pilot scale process regarding thermal load and other stresses. A second objective is to assess the effects of spray-drying on the protein structure, and the mechanisms behind such changes. Ultimately, this may allow for prediction of processabilty based on protein sequence and structure.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral fellow in Experimental Particle Physics on the Light Dark Matter eXperiment (LDMX)
The overarching theme of this project is to get ready for LDMX data, and the work will be conducted in close connection with the international LDMX collaboration, in which Lund University is the only non-US participant for the time being. One exciting milestone for LDMX is a beam test planned at SLAC in 2025, for the first time collecting data at the actual beam line for LDMX. During the first year, roughly, this project will be focused on the gathering and in particular on the analysis of this test beam data, mainly from the prototype of the hadronic calorimeter.
Another priority in this project will be to study the capabilities of LDMX to handle pile-up (multiple electrons hitting the target at the same time) in more detail. This will mainly be based on simulations studies of potential backgrounds, detector performance, and physics sensitivities. One concrete example is the use of different codes for simulating critical backgrounds, to compare these predictions and to develop methods for how to measure these backgrounds in data. The project also aims to explore to which extent machine learning methods can help with these tasks, e.g. object reconstruction and signal vs background discrimination. This will become more of a focus later in the project.
There is some flexibility in the research programme for this position, and details can be tailored to your specific interests and expertise. There will also be the opportunity to work with questions of climate sustainability in LDMX/HEP, if that is something you are interested in.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Biblical Reception with a specialisation in Religion and Law
The postdoctoral position is part of a research environment focused on the project “Scripture and Secularism: Mapping the Impact of the Bible on Conceptualizations of Europe”, a reception critical investigation into the way uses of scripture support and challenge notions of the “secular”. The position is part of a collaboration between this research environment and the Law, Theology and Culture group at the Faculty of Law.
Large parts of the Bible are dedicated to the discussion of laws, commandments, covenants, norms, and issues of justice. Core concepts of law are often perceived as indebted to the Bible, theology and religion, such as sovereignty, representation, responsibility, justice, or mercy. Both religion and law rely heavily on ritual practices and public displays of authority.
Applicants are invited to submit a proposal for a research project that clearly contributes to studying this intersection between biblical studies and legal studies in contemporary society. The project could, for example, examine issues such as the use of the Ten Commandments in public debates and spaces, the role of Bibles in courts of law, or the relationship between biblical texts and contemporary legal terms and concepts. We also welcome proposals related to other sites of interaction between biblical reception studies and law.
