Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral Fellow

The structural biology laboratory of Kalyan Das at MMI, University of Alberta, Canada invites applications from highly motivated researchers interested in pursuing a career in structure-based drug design using single-particle cryo-EM. A candidate should have a Ph. D. degree in structural biology, molecular biology, chemical biology, biochemistry, or a related field with a proven track record. Strong hands-on experience in protein engineering, protein expression in bacteria and insect cells, and biophysical characterization of proteins and macromolecule assemblies is essential. Knowledge in structural biology is helpful; however, successful candidates will have the training opportunities to carry out structural studies by single-particle cryo-EM. A qualified person should be a team player and should have strong writing and verbal communication skills. 

Our structural biology laboratory is equipped or access to state-of-the-art Krios G4 TEM, Vitrobot Mark IV and Leica GP2, multiple advanced GPU workstations for cryo-EM. The lab is also equipped with Akta Pure 25 integrated with Wyatt Optilab T-rEX, miniDAWN TREOS, and DynoPro NanoStar for purification and characterization of macromolecules

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow – RESILIENCE

  • The successful candidate will contribute to various ongoing studies with a primary focus on two 2-site randomized controlled trials with the Universities of Alberta and Toronto. Both trials involve a multimodal lifestyle intervention aimed at improving body composition and cardiometabolic health in endometrial and breast cancer survivors. This position is based in-person at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, with close working relationship with the University of Toronto site, PI, Dr. Amy Kirkham in the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education. The candidate will support the implementation and management of study protocols across the study sites, plus management of the local site for one trial, and contribute to the local site only for the second trial.
  • Responsibilities include providing mentorship and support to a team of graduate students and staff to manage research ethics, participant recruitment, screening, and assessment as well as overseeing trial delivery components such a digital health platform and nutrition education. The fellow will analyze and interpret clinical data derived from state-of-art body composition and cardiovascular assessment techniques (such as DXA, MRI, ultrasound), dietary assessments, physical activity and sleep monitor data, metabolic cart, and metabolic biomarkers, among others. In one of the trials data collection includes assessments of physical and cognitive function.
  • The candidate will also lead and collaborate on the preparation of abstracts, manuscripts, and conference presentations, and support the development of educational and knowledge translation materials for participants and funders. Opportunities to assist with grant writing will be provided and encouraged. The postdoctoral fellow will also provide mentorship and support to trainees in the lab ranging from undergraduate to doctoral levels, as well as to research staff. Active engagement with multidisciplinary research teams from various institutions and both clinical (especially oncology and cardiology) and academic collaborators will be essential.
  • This role offers valuable experience in clinical trials, oncology, digital health tools, cardiometabolic health, and multimodal lifestyle interventions. These experiences are expected to provide the candidate with unparalleled preparation for developing their own independent lab.

The Foundations of Robust and Trustworthy Machine Learning (FORT) lab led by Prof Nidhi Hegde has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral researcher. The FORT lab focuses on a fundamental approach to developing robust and trustworthy algorithms for machine learning. This largely applies to notions of privacy and fairness, but also to more general concepts of robustness and stability. Applications range from supervised learning to bandits to language models to image segmentation. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Position In Computational Psychiatry (Real-World Applications of AI and Machine Learning on Health Data)

The successful applicants will participate and lead research that applies advanced statistical, AI and ML techniques to large populational health data of patients with mental and substance use disorders. Current and potential projects include two main directions: 1) Individualized prediction of mental and substance use disorders and overdoses and associated health and economical outcomes in the population using health, survey and biological data; 2) Implementation of ML models through interactions with multiple stakeholders and people with living and lived experiences.

The successful applicants will have the opportunity of supervised access to several public and government/institution owned datasets, including large (over 4 million people) de-identified health data from Alberta. In this context, there are excellent opportunities for shared mentorship and collaboration with several PIs in psychiatry and computing science, including the Alberta machine intelligence institute (Amii).

The successful applicants will play a leadership role for several research projects in computational psychiatry, develop and participate in preparation of research grant proposals, assist in the supervision and training of other personnel including technologists, graduate students, other lab members and scientific collaborators.
