24 Postdoctoral Fellowship at Uppsala University, Sweden

The position is located at the Division of Biomedical Engineering in the interdisciplinary research group EMBLA, which is led by Professor Maria Tenje. The group conducts successful and internationally-recognized research in organs-on-chip and droplet-based microfluidics in collaboration with research teams at several different Swedish and overseas universities. Research funding has been obtained through several prestigious grants, including from the Knut och Alice Wallenberg Foundation, and European Research Council (ERC).

Degradable alloys (e.g., Mg- and Zn-based) are promising biomaterials for bone-healing implants due their ability to generate bone tissue while degrading within the human body. Porous scaffolds can further facilitate the bone-healing process by mimicking the structure of bone and promoting a better bond to the bone itself. With the help of additive manufacturing, such complex structures can be created. However, for degradable alloys, there is limited knowledge of how to manufacture these scaffolds using additive manufacturing. One of the challenges is the high reactivity of magnesium and zinc, which leads to evaporation in the chamber, affecting the overall printability of the material. Moreover, the complexity of porous scaffolds can result in excessive degradation rates, leading to reduced mechanical integrity and limited functionality for the structure. This project aims to design scaffolds as well as the AM processing of degradable such, with appropriate degradation and mechanical properties, and to investigate methods for improving the biological response of these structures through optimized structural design. This may include multimaterial designs.

Within the Scandinavian Sjögren´s syndrome network, the goal is to identify novel risk genes, epigenetic changes and immunological mechanisms behind the development of primary Sjögren´s syndrome and its different clinical manifestations, particularly lymphoma. This is achieved by genome wide association studies (GWAS) and DNA sequencing. Further, we study epigenetic regulation through DNA methylation and gene expression in whole blood, sorted cells and single cells, as well as proteomics in sera. The duties consist of data analysis from GWAS, DNA methylation, DNA and RNA sequencing and proteomics.

The researcher will take active part in the development of methods and software for seismic data processing and analysis and participate in research on, and routine analysis of, local, regional and teleseismic events. An important part of the duties is the participate in information services: to authorities, media and the general public, as well as in outreach related to SNSN. The job also includes travel within Sweden for maintenance of permanent seismic stations and occasional deployment of temporary stations. The researcher will also participate in development projects, with industry or international collaborators and take part in meetings and conferences nationally and internationally.

The Vickovic Lab at Uppsala University is seeking a dynamic, self-motivated, team-oriented Postdoctoral Computational Scientist to expand computational efforts in understanding disease mechanisms. We are interested in developing integrative multi-modal data analysis tools incorporating single cell and spatially resolved omics data, imaging data, clinical phenotypes, variants and genotypes. The successful candidate will have the unique opportunity to work at the intersection of mathematical modeling, omics data analysis, workflow optimization, and resource building.

The postdoc position is part of the Horizon Europe SymAware (Symbolic logic framework for situational awareness in mixed autonomy) project, and will be focused on human-in-the-loop design and automation methods for ethical and trustworthy awareness in human-robot interaction. Specific topics of interest include system transparency, human oversight, and fairness in social interaction with autonomous vehicles and multi-drone systems.

Research on fundamental models and methods for large-scale convex optimization, in particular for multi-objective problems in radiotherapy planning. In current radiotherapy practice, clinicians are often required to manually explore tradeoffs among objectives such as tumor control, risks of side effects, and overall treatment complexity. This is an often laborious and ineffective part of the treatment planning workflow since generating each treatment plan amounts to solving a large-scale convex optimization problem anew. The aim of this project is to develop state-of-the-art optimization methods that take full advantage of the problem structure to (1) achieve computational efficiency and (2) support the efficient exploration of achievable tradeoffs (the Pareto front). The specific methods and theory will be decided on together with the successful applicant. In addition to working closely with the research group at the university, the applicant is also expected to collaborate with domain experts at the radiotherapy company Elekta.

The research group in clinical neurophysiology conducts translational research that focuses on optimizing diagnostics, follow-up and pathophysiological mapping of diseases due to disturbed neuromuscular transmission. The current research project aims to investigate disease mechanisms in the autoimmune neuromuscular disease Myasthenia Gravis (MG) in an in vitro cell model system of human nerve and muscle cells. Tasks include working with induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC), molecular biological methods such as immunohistochemistry (microscopy), biochemistry (protein analysis), molecular biology (PCR, qRT-PCR), cellular electrophysiological analysis on multielectrode array. Supervision of PhD students and other students as well as teaching is also included.

The postdoc position is part of the “Gender fairness and gender-sensitive design in social robots and autonomous agents” project, funded by the Department of Information Technology of Uppsala University, and will be focused on developing and evaluating methods for algorithmic fairness and gender-sensitive design to counteract gender biases in social robots and autonomous systems. In addition to these research duties, the position will also involve teaching duties (in the area of human-machine interaction) up to 20% of full-time employment. 

This postdoctoral project brings together human-robot interaction with interactive and interpretable/explainable machine learning in the context of participatory automation – that is developing robots which can be “taught” by a diverse range of users. This approach aims to create contextually, socially appropriate machine behaviour whilst also delivering on EU Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI.

G. Messori’s research group hosts three H2020/Horizon research projects and several national projects, focussing on multiple aspects of mid and high latitude climate extremes. Messori’s ERC grant: “Compound Climate Extremes in North America and Europe: from Dynamics to Predictability”. The aim of the work is to identify the large-scale atmospheric drivers of compound extremes in Europe and North America and study their predictability. There is considerable freedom to focus on different approaches, from indicators issued from dynamical systems theory to data-driven/machine learning or numerical forecast modelling tools. The post-doc, if s/he so wishes, will also have the opportunity to engage in teaching/supervising duties.

The position is hosted by the Division of Scientific Computing within the Department of Information Technology. As one of the world’s largest focused research environments in Scientific Computing the research and education has a unique breadth, with large activities in classical scientific computing areas such as mathematical modeling, development and analysis of algorithms, scientific software development and high-performance computing. The division is currently in an expansive phase in new emerging areas such as cloud and fog computing, data science, and artificial intelligence, where it plays key roles in several new strategic initiatives at the University. The division currently hosts 20 PhD students, with more than 80 doctorates awarded. The postdoctoral position is expected to independently drive scientific projects within the area, together with the Principal Investigator of the project. Duties include general bacteriological and fungal laboratory work, microbiology, gas analyses and mass balance calculations. The position is highly experimental and the applicant should be well acquainted with microbial experimental work and analysis. The position requires travelling to Wageningen University where a considerable amount of the experimental work will be conducted. Scientific writing and editing as well as research presentations are a natural part of the position.

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to perform theoretical investigations as well as to do computationally-based modelling within the research area of materials physics, with a special focus on modelling of electrically induced spin and orbital torques, theory for light-induced spin and orbital currents, current-induced spin dynamics and modeling of electrically induced magnetization dynamics in spintronic elements. The research tasks include the development of theoretical models and computer simulation programs to simulate non-equilibrium orbital and spin currents and their dynamics in antiferromagnetic and topological spintronic materials that have a significant potential for applications in future energy-saving spintronic elements. Various computer programs (like first-principles (DFT) calculations and simulations of coupled spin and orbital dynamics) will be used.
