Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher in Limnology
The littoral zone is an extensive habitat at the land-water interface of lakes, four times longer than the global ocean shoreline, and characterised by abundant growth of aquatic plants. The very high growth rates of these plants drive high carbon turnover. Therefore, littoral zones of lakes can exhibit high carbon sequestration, but also high emission of greenhouse gases. Current understanding is however very limited, as littoral zones are spatially complex and difficult to study. Within the RELITORATE project, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, a team of experts in flux measurement, remote sensing and numerical modelling will use new and emerging methodologies in order to gain a comprehensive and quantitative understanding of littoral carbon and greenhouse gas fluxes, beyond the scale of individual lakes.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in computer architecture: Using broad contextual information for better branch prediction
Branch prediction is increasing in importance as processors have more in-flight instructions. Our hypothesis is that we can produce fundamentally better predictions by merging different prediction contexts rather than competing between different predictor outcomes. The reason to believe in this hypothesis is that the different contexts used by different predictors today are not independent: for example, loops and statistically predicted branches are intermixed and affect each other. Combining contextual information before finding patterns is fundamentally different from combining the final predictions after each predictor finds its own context-specific pattern. If we can combine different types of contextual information (e.g., loops and statistical counts and histories), we believe we can create a more sophisticated “meta-context” that allows us to recognize patterns from the combined context information, leading to better predictions. The flip side is that it may be correspondingly harder to recognize the right patterns, particularly at runtime. This project contains two parts: looking at the underlying potential by studying application behavior and looking at the tradeoffs to make a practical design.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in Materials Science with focus on automated materials exploration
This project focuses on developing autonomous workflows in a self-driving laboratory (SDL) for the exploration of new energy materials. The SDL integrates sputtering, reactive thermal processing, and hyperspectral imaging to fabricate and characterize combinatorial thin-film libraries across a broad chemical and thermodynamic space. The project’s core challenge is guiding exploration within the experimental space, to uncover synthesis–property relationships for targeted materials. This will involve combining materials science expertise with machine learning approaches, both existing and newly developed, to design and execute multi-stage experimental workflows with distinct objectives. A central outcome will be the demonstration of the first PVD-based SDL governed by knowledge-driven (not only data-driven) exploration strategies. The project will involve working closely with a team including PhD students in machine learning, automation and materials science, an environment of thin film science and engineering experts, and with collaborations in AI, data science and SDL development.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in translational genomics
Understanding the relationship between genetic variation and phenotypic variation is a fundamental goal in genome biology and genomic medicine. In the last 15 years, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have detected numerous DNA regions that are associated with complex traits in humans. Translation to functional understanding is lagging, in part because >95% of human GWAS-identified loci are in non-coding, regulatory regions of the genome, and pinpointing causal genes and mechanisms is complex. In this project, we aim to understand the molecular mechanisms of species’ ability to adapt to their environment. The herring is an excellent system to study such adaptations. First, herring fertilize their eggs externally, which exposes them to considerable environmental variability throughout their life cycle. Secondly, there are ~10E12 herring on earth, which mate randomly. Hence, allele frequencies of gene variants in different locally adapted subpopulations are set by natural selection, while genetic noise (genetic drift) plays a minute role. GWAS in herring performed at Leif Andersson’s lab at Uppsala University have identified >100 genomic regions controlling adaptation to differences in salinity, temperature, timing of reproduction and light conditions. Unlike in humans, many associated DNA regions in herring include single base changes in protein coding sequence that clearly point to likely causal variants and genes. Funded by the Wallenberg Foundation and enabled by a new research infrastructure built by the BalticWaters Foundation, we now recruit a post-doc to be part of a team striving to unravel the molecular mechanisms through which some identified variants influence species adaptation. The post-doc will focus on base editing and functional experiments in zebrafish models, and possibly in herring as well. Throughout the project, the post-doc will interact with experts in the fields of evolutional biology and spatial transcriptomics, who will approach the challenge from complimentary angles.

About Uppsala University, Sweden –Official Website
Uppsala University is a research university in Uppsala, Sweden. Founded in 1477, it is the oldest university in Sweden and all of the Nordic countries still in operation. It has ranked among the world’s 100 best universities in several high-profile international rankings during recent years. The university uses “Gratiae veritas naturae” as its motto and embraces natural sciences.
The university rose to pronounced significance during the rise of Sweden as a great power at the end of the 16th century and was then given a relative financial stability with the large donation of King Gustavus Adolphus in the early 17th century. Uppsala also has an important historical place in Swedish national culture, identity and for the Swedish establishment: in historiography, literature, politics, and music. Many aspects of Swedish academic culture in general, such as the white student cap, originated in Uppsala. It shares some peculiarities, such as the student nation system, with Lund University and the University of Helsinki.
Uppsala belongs to the Coimbra Group of European universities and to the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities. The university has nine faculties distributed over three “disciplinary domains”. It has about 44,000 registered students and 2,300 doctoral students. It has a teaching staff of roughly 1,800 (part-time and full-time) out of a total of 6,900 employees. Twenty-eight per cent of the 716 professors at the university are women. Of its turnover of SEK 6.6 billion (approx. USD 775 million) in 2016, 29% was spent on education at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, while 70% was spent on research and research programs.
Architecturally, Uppsala University has traditionally had a strong presence in Fjärdingen, the neighbourhood around the cathedral on the western side of the River Fyris. Despite some more contemporary building developments further away from the centre, Uppsala’s historic centre continues to be dominated by the presence of the university.
