(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral Researcher (Analytical Chemistry, Single-Cell Analysis)

High-throughput screening methods are required to find, test and analyze new compounds and drugs. To address this challenge, we use droplet microfluidics, which allows for the creation of tiny reaction and cultivation wells. The resulting emulsion has an excellent monodispersity, with droplet volumes in the range of pico- or a few nanoliters. The technique is commonly used in combination with fluorescence spectroscopy. In addition, we employ mass spectrometry for a more detailed analysis of the enclosed compounds or reaction products.

(10) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position on “Creating new socio-ecological incentive systems to support sustainable action, recycling and sharing, using Internet of Things technologies and multiple incentive systems”

  • You would create novel research breakthroughs and contribute to the ambitious ERC Advanced Investigator Grant on “Co-Evolving City Life” (CoCi) in subject areas connected to smart cities and digital societies.
  • Your specific research focus will be on “Sustainable Cities and Coordination”. Given recent digital technologies such as the Internet of Things (sensor and communication networks), Artificial Intelligence, and Blockchain/ Distributed Ledger Technology, production and logistics are becoming increasingly smart.
  • You will study how the convergence of these technologies can be used to fuel new approaches towards more sustainable production and logistics in an urban context, particularly consumption and waste disposal. For example, Blockchain technology allows for the creation of new token-based incentive systems in areas that suffer from externality effects, including the implementation of “smart waste”.
  • The research question we would like to answer is, how the approach of self-organized and learning networked agents can be used to create social incentives and economic forces that would promote the emergence of closed loops in a material supply network and could thereby boost the formation of a circular and sharing economy. We want to study, how a multi-dimensional real-time measurement, feedback and coordination system would have to be designed and operated in order to reach this goal. Creating new incentive systems that encourage sustainable action and discourage unsustainable actions are, in fact, a new application domain of community-managed local and crypto-currencies.
  • Together with our team, you will work on the mechanisms and effects of multi-dimensional, real-time coordination by means of a “socio-ecological finance system” (“finance system 4.0”), elaborate the theoretical concept, then investigate it by means of agent-based simulations and experiments, and finally apply it in an urban demonstration project.
  • You will produce a simulation program demonstrating self-organizing logistic networks that become more circular and sustainable over time.
  • Furthermore, we want to couple the simulation program with a sensor-based environment (Raspberry Pi or Arduino, or other) that responds to measurements, flexibly adapts, and self-organizes.

(22) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post Doctoral Researcher in Adaptive Planning of Transport Infrastructure under Uncertainty

In recent times, cities have experienced an unprecedented period of flux, whether triggered by disruptive technology, political upheavals, emergent social trends or the ongoing global pandemic. These growing uncertainties have prompted cities to rethink land use and transportation infrastructure provision planned for the future. In this sense, adaptive planning proposes to cope with uncertainty by committing to a few short-term actions, leaving options open for the future and continually adapting by learning how uncertainty unfolds over time. The ETH and NUS have a new project “AMIL” within the Future Cities Lab – Global Research Programme (FCL-G) that aims to integrate mobility, land use and infrastructure into a resilient, adaptive system that responds to changing needs, through a three-pronged approach. First, social network surveys in Zurich and Singapore will monitor and examine the ‘drivers of change’, by assessing changes in social and economic activity. Second, novel transport modelling and simulation techniques will be developed that can handle the unique challenges posed by the ‘city in flux’, with dynamically adaptive land use and demand responsive transportation systems. Third, exploratory modelling, decision-making under uncertainty methods (e.g. real-options) and optimization methods will be employed to formulate adaptive plans that can respond to short-term and long-term change. The project will bring tools, insights, methods and procedures that can provide decision-support for planning across relevant scales of time and space. Simulation models and software tools will be developed in consultation with an expert panel of practitioners and policymakers, with a goal to enable adaptive planning, improve resilience to shocks such as COVID-19, and reduce misalignment of provision and emerging demand in the long-term. These learnings will be applied to a study of infrastructure corridors and urban development across intercity, city-wide and local scales in both Alpine and Southeast Asian contexts, with Zurich and Singapore as the main hubs under study. The project will be guided by regular stakeholder workshops in both contexts, and will produce a suite of open-source software tools and planning recommendations developed in collaboration with an inter-agency working group for adaptive mobility, land use and infrastructure.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher for Rare Disease Diagnosis using Machine Learning

Rare diseases affect 400 million people worldwide, and about 500,000 in Switzerland. Due to their usually early onset, rare diseases predominantly affect children. Children with rare diseases may present in any setting but are found at increased rates in critically ill neonates or children admitted to intensive care units. Since many children with rare diseases remain undiagnosed, our goal is to combine clinical evaluation (to characterize the extreme phenotypes) with multi-omics exploration (to delineate the underlying genetic and molecular alterations) to identify rare diseases in critically ill children. This project is integrated in the Swiss-wide National Data Stream “SwissPedHealth”, funded by the Personalized Health and Related Technologies (PHRT) strategic focus area of the ETH, and the Swiss Personalized Health Network (SPHN).

(25) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher in mathematical phylodynamics

The open position entails working closely with Prof. Dr. Tanja Stadler and other team members in the Computational Evolution group on mathematical models for phylodynamics. The overarching goal is to develop a general coherent phylodynamic framework allowing us to identify fundamental population dynamic rules across biological scales based on both phylogenetic trees and data on the abundance of individuals.

The initial goal is to explore characteristics, similarities and limitations of the stochastic birth-death model and the coalescent within phylodynamics. Based on these insights, you will formulate a neutral phylodynamic model that has these common birth-death-based and coalescent-based phylodynamic models embedded within it. Subsequently, the neutral phylodynamic model will be extended such that population structure, selection and cell differentiation can be taken into account. We envision that the resulting model will be the basis for future phylodynamic applications.
