We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Synthetic Biology Group in the Biosciences Division (BSD), Biological and Environmental Systems Science Directorate (BESS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to develop and optimize CRISPR-Cas tools to enable genome engineering in DOE-relevant microbial systems. These tools accelerate our ability to interrogate genotype-phenotype relationships to build the fundamental knowledge of these microbial systems and provide design rules to address key challenges to enable an agile Bioeconomy.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Applied Catalysis and Emissions Research Group in the Buildings and Transportation Science Division (BTSD), Energy Science and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).   The mission of the Applied Catalysis and Emissions Research Group is to develop, understand, and demonstrate technologies for energy conversion that will achieve net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) and near-zero emissions of pollutants. The successful candidate(s) for this position will have the opportunity to work on projects focused on: methane oxidation catalysts (MOCs); catalysts for converting carbon dioxide to methanol and hydrocarbons; sulfur and NOx traps for fuel cell air purification; oxidation catalysts for controlling emissions from interal combustion engines running on net-zero carbon fuels; and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts for control of nitrogen oxides (NOx).

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Materials and Chemistry Group in the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division, National Security Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  The postdoctoral research associate will have expertise in solid-state density functional theory (DFT). The M&C Group supports the DOE in its nuclear nonproliferation mission by leveraging cutting-edge scientific resources for the characterization of solid phase materials relevant to the nuclear fuel cycle, including neutron scattering, materials analysis, and leadership-scale high-performance computing. The M&C Group leads cutting-edge computational and experimental research in the fields of actinide chemistry and materials science and leverages extensive knowledge in fuel cycle processes for the betterment of the nuclear nonproliferation mission space.

The Next Generation Ecosystem Experiment Arctic (NGEE Arctic) project seeks a postdoctoral researcher to study biogeochemical processes related to plant-soil feedbacks and greenhouse gas balance in Arctic tundra ecosystems using computational modeling. NGEE Arctic is a large, interdisciplinary research project that is geared towards improving the simulation of tundra ecosystems in the DOE’s earth system model E3SM. Our team of scientists works at several national laboratories as well as the University of Alaska. We use experiments, field observations, and synthesis of existing data to inform the representation of environmental processes in models as well as model parameterization and evaluation. Recent efforts have focused on how above and below-ground plant functional traits influence ecosystem carbon (C), water, and nutrient fluxes, and how redox conditions in permafrost soil profiles drive iron cycling and production of greenhouse gasses. The postdoctoral researcher will conduct and analyze model simulations integrating plant traits with biogeochemistry to explore how interactions among vegetation, hydrology, and redox drive carbon cycling and greenhouse gas balances in tundra ecosystems, involving model simulations at mesocosm to landscape scales. The postdoc will also lead data synthesis of soil biogeochemistry and greenhouse gas flux measurements from Arctic systems to constrain and evaluate model simulations.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Quantum Heterostructures Group in the Materials Sciences and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  In this role, you will conduct research characterizing emerging single photon emitters and optically addressable spin defects and you will use these color centers as quantum sensors to probe phase transitions in 2D magnetic materials and candidate quantum spin liquids. You will utilize user facilities at the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) to fabricate lithographically patterned 2D devices. You will have access to variable temperature closed-cycle optical microscopes and a mK magneto-optical microscope integrated in a dilution refrigerator. The group has excellent synthesis and characterization tools for thin films, routinely uses neutron and X-ray facilities and has great collaborations in- and out-side of ORNL. We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Quantum Computing and Sensing Group in the Computational Science and Engineering Division (CSED), Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate (CCSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

We are seeking several Postdoctoral Research Associates to work on one of three projects to investigate quantum materials with neutron scattering.  

Project 1 will use neutron diffraction and neutron spectroscopy techniques to identify and characterize exotic magnetic ground states and excitations in topical frustrated magnets.

Project 2 will develop high-performance tools to extract the bond-dependent and ansitropic magnetic interactions in quantum magnetic materials from single crystal diffuse scattering measurements.

Project 3 will employ neutron diffraction, neutron total scattering and neutron spectroscopy techniques under ambient condition and external stimuli to investigate the possible correlations between average/local symmetry breaking, magnetism, mechanical properties, and Dirac/Weyl states in topological semimetal candidates.

We design and apply quantitative tools to advance our understanding of how bioresources can be sustainably and reliably produced, delivered, and utilized to enable the expansion of the US and global bioeconomy while also preserving ecosystem services. This position seeks to fill a research role in chemical processes and energy systems with an expert in computational modeling and simulation theory and application. Preference is given to candidates with expertise in the modeling and analysis of chemical processes and systems over a wide range of scales. The successful candidate will conduct research independently but collaboratively primarily in reactor scale modelling and chemical kinetic modelling. Experience with commercial chemical reactor modeling packages (COMSOL, STARCCM/gPROMS, Fluent, Barracuda etc.), open-source codes (OPENFOAM), and/or MFiX will all be considered favorably.  Direct experience modeling fixed bed, moving bed, fluid bed or riser-based chemical reactors and working knowledge of both finite volume and finite element methods will be a positive.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Computational Urban Sciences Group in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division (CSED), Computing and Computational Sciences (CCSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The postdoc will focus on applications of Computational Geometry, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning on Urban Systems. The role is expected to use data-driven approaches to develop and foster novel scientific research in the areas of building energy, electric grid and energy systems, transportation systems, natural hazards, and their impact on urban systems, as well as response to other non-natural emergencies. The ideal candidate is expected to bring expertise in the application of AI, data-driven knowledge discovery techniques, and modeling and simulation. Prior experience of applying such knowledge to the understanding of urban systems is preferred.
