PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate for modelling & optimising highly efficient drive systems for E-vehicles based on GaN devices
We are looking for outstanding, highly motivated people interested in pursuing PhD research on highly efficient drive systems for electric vehicles. For achieving high efficiency in a wide operating range, different 3-level inverter topologies and modulation schemes for drive systems should be modelled and optimised in this research project. Considering a wide operating range is important as the inverter is directly connected to the battery, which has a wide voltage range depending on the state of charge. Furthermore, the drive system is operated in many use cases only at a relatively low power level compared to nominal power, so that also partial load operation is also important to consider in the design phase.
The efficiency increase should be achieved by using optimised 3-level inverter topologies, which also allow for to reduction of the losses in the electrical machine due to lower ripple currents. Furthermore, new wide band gap depletion mode GaN HEMT devices in a direct-driven cascade configuration should be investigated, which allows reducing conduction as well as switching losses thus enabling a wider range of switching frequency at high-efficiency levels. A disadvantage of 3L inverters is the higher number of switches, which results in higher costs and which require more space. To still benefit from the 3L topology, a design trade-off between the inverter and the motor losses, which results in overall minimal losses, and an optimised PCB power module layout are necessary.
The optimal design should be identified based on comprehensive models and an optimisation procedure considering the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP). In the optimisation, different 3L topologies, modulation schemes, a wide switching frequency range, and different motor types as well as basic control strategies should be considered, for identifying the best topology and the optimal operating parameters for the different operating points. In the final step, you should validate the optimised design with a prototype system.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Regional Scale Runout Modelling
This PhD project will apply ORIN-3D, a physically-based runout model that uses GPU computing to decrease model run times by two orders of magnitude, at a regional scale. Orin3D is a depth-averaged, Lagrangian model that solves the equations of motion using smooth particle hydrodynamics. In this project, the PhD student will develop a GIS-based regional-scale modeling framework that allows the model to be calibrated, validated, and applied at large spatial scales. This framework will integrate multiple landslide types and sizes, and include robust quantification of uncertainty integrated into the model outputs. In particular, probabilistic estimates of debris height and debris velocity will be obtained, and directly used for vulnerability and fragility analysis. The PhD student will incorporate landslide inventory datasets from New Zealand, including the landslides generated during the 2016 Kaikoura Earthquake and the 2023 Cyclone Gabrielle storm event. As part of the PhD, there is funding provided to travel to New Zealand and work with the NZ research team, and the project will be integrated into a large research programme.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position: “A Depth-Averaged Material Point Method for the initiation and dynamics of Alpine Mass Movements”
To address these limitations while maintaining the efficiency of classical approaches, this thesis will focus on developing a Depth-Averaged Material Point Method (DAMPM) for the initiation and dynamics Alpine Mass Movements. This approach builds upon the recent work of Guillet et al. (2023, Journal of Geophysical Research). In the initial phase, a hydro-mechanical DAMPM will be developed within an elasto-viscoplastic context (in C++). This method will be applied to evaluate the release volume of shallow landslides as well as the dynamics of subsequent geophysical mass flow, incorporating a granular rheology model and a suitable entrainment law. The DAMPM results will be compared to 3D Material Point Method (MPM) simulations and experimental data obtained from a newly developed meso-scale granular flume. In the subsequent phase, the implementation of a GPU CUDA version will be explored to enhance the model’s efficiency. This optimization aims to facilitate large-scale hazard evaluations and enable precise uncertainty quantification using the developed model.
