PhD position summary/title: PhD in Artificial Intelligence for energy applications
Our research group currently is involved in research projects in the energy domain, including mostly smart grid applications. The focus of our AI4E team in these projects is on data analytics, as well as coordination algorithms for, e.g., demand response. A major objective of the applications we want to support is to accommodate large penetration of renewable sources (wind mills, solar panels, etc.) without requiring excessive investments in the power grid infrastructure. This involves characterizing and eventually predicting both power generation (from renewables) and consumption behavior (and its flexibility, e.g., what portion thereof can be shifted in time), using data analytics techniques, constructing generative models, applying machine learning, etc. The next step is to actively control power consumption, e.g., by developing algorithms for energy management systems (to steer power consumption and/or decide what to use local production for, e.g., push into the grid or local storage).

PhD position summary/title:
The research project in which the successful candidate will be involved integrates research on psychological and physiological stress, conflict and team dynamics with management research, contributing to the constructive use of conflicts and promoting well-being, performance, and startup founding team success. Startups are among the top priorities for strengthening economic growth. Despite investment into fostering their development, most new businesses fail in their first years, conflicts in startup teams and effects of work stress being two of the top reasons for this failure. This project aims to study team dynamics and destructive spirals of conflict and stress by integrating different aspects of stress (psychological, hormonal, cardiovascular, behavioral), conflict, and regulatory efforts (individual- and team-level stress and conflict coping, communication, informal performance management) in startups founding teams. Also, it aims to shed light on the way in which these dynamics can impair startup decision making, wellbeing, performance and long-term outcomes (e.g., survival, revenue, funding attracted).

PhD position summary/title:
Telecommunication networks emit radio-frequency (RF) electromagnetic fields using antennas. Humans, both users, and non-users of these networks are exposed to RF electromagnetic fields emitted by a range of telecommunication technologies simultaneously. As networks evolve over time, new technologies (new precoding techniques, new frequencies, (Ma)MiMo antennas, smart surfaces, etc) are introduced into the network in order to improve communication from the network towards the users and the other way around. The introduction of these new technologies changes our exposure to electromagnetic fields. However, this exposure is at the moment not well quantified. It is important to quantify this human exposure in order to assess whether this exposure has any health effects on humans. Therefore, we are looking for a candidate who can improve our understanding of this RF electromagnetic field exposure.

Background: The candidate will help develop and upscale a novel pandemic preparedness diagnostic assay that detects and quantifies viral and host inflammation biomarker peptides using mass spectrometry. This assay was co-developed by the ProGenTomics lab and is therefore still very novel and groundbreaking. It has been proven very efficient for the detection and quantification of Sars-Cov-2. More specifically, it uses Stable Isotope Standards and Capture by Anti-Peptide Antibodies (SISCAPA) technology to enrich and quantify proteotypic peptides of the N protein from trypsin-digested samples from COVID-19 patients. The Cov²MS assay was shown to be compatible with a variety of sample matrices including nasopharyngeal swabs, saliva and blood plasma and shows a strong positive correlation with qPCR detection up to the level where no live virus can be cultured from patients. The automatable “addition only” sample preparation, digestion protocol, peptide enrichment and subsequent reduced dependency upon LC allow analysis of up to 500 samples per day per MS instrument. Importantly, peptide enrichment allowed detection of N protein in a pooled sample containing a single PCR positive sample mixed with 31 PCR negative samples, without loss in sensitivity.

Insects are the foundation of all terrestrial life due to their diversity and ecological role, their influence on agriculture, natural resources, and human health. At the same time, insects are most vulnerable to human activities affecting the environment, which has already led to a dramatic decrease in their abundance and species richness. One of these activities that potentially play a role in this phenomenon is emissions of Radio-Frequency (RF) electromagnetic fields. These fields are used in telecommunication networks to enable (wireless) telecommunication between billions of users worldwide. Electromagnetic fields are emitted into the environment and consequently, living organisms, including insects, are exposed to these fields. It is currently unknown: (1) how these electromagnetic fields interact with insects and (2) at what levels these interactions might have biological effects on insects. You will answer these questions.

The research group Materials Science and Technology-DyMaLab is looking for a PhD researcher to contribute to a research project on additively manufactured metal lattice structures (MLS). The project focusses on the impact-dynamic behaviour of these materials. Because of their large deformation capacity and low density, AM lattices might have a high potential to absorb impact energy making them suitable for crashworthiness applications. The quasi-static behavior of MLS produced by LPBF has been extensively studied and documented for samples with different relative densities and unit cells. However, although in many applications impact loads occur, the dynamic lattice behavior is not yet fully understood. Only few scientific studies are available on the effect of high strain rates or impact loads on the deformation and failure mechanisms of metal lattices. Dynamic data at the unit cell or even strut level, is still missing.

About Ghent University, Belgium –Official Website
Ghent University is a public research university located in Ghent, Belgium. It was established in 1817 by King William I of the Netherlands. After the Belgian revolution of 1830, the newly formed Belgian state began to administer the university. In 1930, the university became the first Dutch-speaking university in Belgium, whereas French had previously been the standard academic language in what was Université de Gand. In 1991, it was granted major autonomy and changed its name accordingly from State University of Ghent (Dutch: Rijksuniversiteit Gent, abbreviated as RUG) to its current designation.
In contrast to the Catholic University of Leuven or the Free University of Brussels, UGent considers itself a pluralist university in a special sense, i.e. not connected to any particular religion or political ideology. Its motto Inter Utrumque (‘In Between Both Extremes’), on the coat of arms, suggests the acquisition of wisdom and science comes only in an atmosphere of peace, when the institution is fully supported by the monarchy and fatherland.
Ghent University is one of the biggest Flemish universities, consisting of 44,000 students and 9,000 staff members. The University also supports the University Library and the University Hospital, which is one of the largest hospitals in Belgium. It is one of the greatest beneficiaries of funding from the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO). Ghent University consistently rates among the top 100 universities in the world.
