(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoc, PhD, or Software Engineer in XR applications for assembly (dis- and re-assembly) of net-zero carbon infrastructure

The project will be carried out by an XR Team: a postdoc, a doctoral student and an XR technical expert over four years. The XR Team is responsible for conducting cutting-edge research and developing methods and tools with the goal of delivering a flexible plug-and-play toolbox that can be applied in three exemplary projects for inspection, assembly (including dis- and re-assembly), and operations. The toolbox should be developed as an extensible XR platform such that other researchers within the AEC and ETH community can adapt it to create their own XR pipelines. The aim is not only to push the research in XR technology but also to lower the barrier of entry, democratizing the use of XR in AEC and further extending the impact of this lighthouse project. Being domain- and material-agnostic, the XR team will provide unique leverage to the large body of ongoing research in sustainable construction, across disciplines, specializations, materials, and structural systems.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title:  Postdoctoral position to characterize how fibroblasts interact with complex extracellular matrices

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a complex three-dimensional network of fibrillar proteins, water, and proteoglycans and is critical for cell fate and function regulation in tissues. Cells sense the biochemical composition and the biophysical properties, such as the architecture and stiffness, of the ECM to regulate a wide variety of cellular functions including adhesion, migration, differentiation, metabolism, mechanics, and growth. In this highly challenging and interdisciplinary project we aim to decipher how cells sense the complexity of the ECM, structurally and biochemically relay the ECM properties into the cell and use this information to establish adhesion. To address this challenge, we will engineer biomimetic fibrillar, multicomponent ECM matrices, apply ultrasensitive atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based single-cell force spectroscopy (SCFS), and engineer cell lines to elucidate the dynamics of cell adhesion initiation and strengthening. To elucidate the molecular pathways regulating adhesion initiation and strengthening, we will use gene editing (CRISPR/Cas), RNAi silencing and chemical inhibitors. We aim to unravel at molecular detail the decisional processes of how cells establish adhesion to complex ECM compositions and architectures. By MINFLUX nanoscopy, which reaches an optical resolution of ~ 1 nm, we aim to determine how ECM properties determine the molecular architecture of cellular adhesomes and their functional implications for signaling. Therewith, we will focus on changes in the molecular adhesome architecture during adhesion maturation, how tension is distributed in the adhesome and on protein dynamics within adhesomes.

(09) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title:  Post-Doc / Project Scientist from March 2024

The rural-urban nexus: establishing a nutrient loop to improve city region food system resilience” is a science-based development project funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). Its aim is to address two critical development challenges facing rapidly urbanising countries across sub-Saharan Africa: the sustainable and equitable production of food, and the provision of dignified and sustainable basic sanitation. Currently, both the agricultural and sanitation sectors are dominated by linear solutions which heavily depend on resource-intensive inputs. These approaches have led to nutrient imbalances within rural-urban interfaces across the world. In rural areas, long-term nutrient mining has created a downward trend of agricultural productivity, which harms livelihoods and exacerbates food insecurity. Simultaneously, rapidly growing urban areas in lower income countries suffer from an accumulation of organic waste (wasted nutrients) caused by insufficient collection and disposal of green, food and human waste, which harm environmental and human health. Most research and development approaches view these problems as disconnected. In contrast, RUNRES adopts a circular model of resource use predicated on the capture, treatment and reuse of food processing and urban organic waste streams as a viable alternative to linear systems. Thus, by reimagining the rural-urban relationship, the project seeks to create a transformed local economy, one that supports circular flows of resources within the following African city regions: Bukavu, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC); Arba Minch, Ethiopia; Kamonyi, Rwanda; and Msunduzi, South Africa. The circular model in these city regions will be hinged on important food commodity value chains: coffee in Bukavu, bananas in Arba Minch, cassava in Kamonyi and vegetables in Msunduzi.

(13) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title:  Postdoctoral or Researcher Position in the field of Environmental Chemistry for the mapping of contaminated sites

The position is part of the Horizon Europe project ARAGORN – Achieving Remediation And GOverning Restoration of contaminated soils Now , which will be carried out together with 16 partners (universities and laboratories) in Europe. In the project, a new framework for assessing contaminated sites will be developed and implemented. Starting from the identification of contaminated sites, the framework will present a decision-making tree to identify remediation and restoration strategies and to potentially use selected contaminated sites as Lighthouses or Living Labs. The selected candidate will be involved in two main activities of the project. One is the generation of maps of potentially contaminated sites of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), organochlorines and -bromines (OCBs), petroleum and coal (PETCO) compounds, and metals. The maps will be developed based on existing data in national inventories of known or suspected hazardous sites, extensive reviews of the scientific literature, reports by national authorities, and other literature. In the second activity, the selected candidate will be involved in the identification of sites across Europe for which remediation actions have occurred, are ongoing, or planned. If available, information will be gathered on the type of remediation action, risk reduction and restoration goals and the potential budget allocated to remediation action.

(17) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title:  Postdoctoral researcher in prediction and optimization of railway operations

The focus of this project is to understand how to find and generate solutions better and faster for the problem of temporal planning of railways. This challenge involves timetabling and rescheduling problems, potentially also considering the rerouting of trains on the network. For those problems, standard mathematical models exist, which combine optimization, with prediction of future operations. The research needs to 1) extend the understanding of the domain-related objectives, to grasp the complexity of the real-life decisions by human controllers, which consider future operations in their choices; 2) improve the solution of large-scale scheduling and routing problems by novel algorithmic, pre-computation, and/or machine learning approaches, which are used in decision support systems. 3) to quantitatively understand the usefulness of the suggested decision compared to the actions actually implemented in real life, to tune and improve the solution process. The ultimate objective is to have a better, faster decision; and precisely understand what “better” means and how it can be mathematically modelled.
