The Experimental Oceanography group at Universität Hamburg is seeking to recruit a Research Associate in Physical Oceanography to undertake research on the ocean dynamics regulating freshwater and convection in the subpolar North Atlantic. The role will focus on the analysis of a range of novel measurements of small-to-mesoscale processes collected in the Labrador Sea within the TERIFIC project (Targeted Experiment to Reconcile Increased Freshwater with Increased Convection) including a series of surface drifter releases and deployments of long-range autonomous underwater vehicles.

For the work in the EPOC project ‘Explaining and Predicting the Ocean Conveyor’, we seek a candidate with an interest in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) and observing methods for ocean circulation. The project is funded by Horizon Europe and includes a consortium with partners in Germany, France, Norway, the UK, USA and Canada. The applicant will work on ocean transport measurement methods using in situ sensors (e.g., moored and autonomous platforms, drift-free ocean bottom pressure) and satellite remote sensing (e.g., altimetry including SWOT, gravimetry). A particular focus of the successful applicant’s work will be on using new ocean pressure instruments to reconcile the geostrophic reference level for ocean transport measurement, and on designing an optimal observing system for the AMOC as an Atlantic-wide circulation pattern.

The position is ideal for being carried out alongside a PhD project. The research associate will work with Professor Georg Ringe at the Institute of Law & Economics. This will include research, from an interdisciplinary and economic perspective, on issues of financial regulation, comparative corporate governance, and capital markets law. Of particular interest are research activities involving aspects of sustainability and/or digitalisation in these fields.

We are looking for a candidate with expertise in experimental physics with a focus on atomic, molecular and optical physics or solid-state physics and a technical background in either x-ray spectroscopy, x-ray coherent diffraction/scattering techniques, photo/Auger-electron spectroscopy or other related techniques using ultrafast light sources. The candidate should have a strong interest in developing novel experimental methods and be versatile to adapt to novel measurement & analysis techniques. Experience in working at storage-ring based x-ray radiation facilities or x-ray free electron lasers is advantageous. The candidate should have a solid background in data analysis & interpretation, programming skills in C++ or Python and good analytical skills.

Our group is deeply involved in detector R&D and construction of the CMS experiment, and in the investigation of radiation damage on silicon sensors. Candidates are expected to engage in the development and characterization of prototype pixel modules for the high luminosity phase of the CMS pixel detector. A close collaboration with international partner institutes is expected.

Your responsibilities will include independent and collaborative research and teaching in the field of history of science and historical epistemology or political epistemology. Different emphases are possible with regard to the knowledge content, historical epochs and cultures treated. Interest in overarching issues, such as the long-term development of knowledge, cultural comparison, or epistemological issues is expected.

Current numerical weather prediction (NWP) models are characterized by large uncertainties in the initial state as well as in the short-range forecasts in the tropics. Tropical analysis uncertainties play a crucial role for the accuracy of extended-range prediction in the extra-tropics.  We are inviting applications from candidates interested in the data assimilation and initialization problem in the tropics focusing on the large-scale equatorial waves and the relative value of wind field and mass-field observations in data assimilation for NWP.  Applicants from disciplines other than meteorology, who are keen to employ their knowledge to the initial-value problem in NWP, are also encouraged to apply. The position is funded by the German Research Foundation DFG and it investigates novel data assimilation modelling methods that takes into account the equatorial waves.

The goal of the project “Quantum HiFi” is to develop a scalable platform for integrated quantum networks. We use diamond nanophotonic devices as efficient spin-photon interfaces and aim to extend the computational capabilities by developing high fidelity gate between silicon vacancy color centers and nearby nuclear spins. This will be used to run error-detection and -correction codes over multiple network nodes.

The successful research associates will conduct research on the timely topic of “Theoretical Multi-Messenger Astrophysics”. The particular focus will be on the theoretical/numerical modeling of the electromagnetic and neutrino signals of major gravitational wave sources. Demonstrated expertise in the relevant areas of theoretical astrophysics (general relativity, hydrodynamics, nuclear equations of state, neutrino physics/transport, nuclear reactions and/or radiative transfer) and of computational physics/supercomputing are of particular interest.

Building upon coherent diffractive imaging and phase-retrieval methods, as well as experimental results obtained using X-ray free-electron laser sources, the candidate will help develop new strategies and algorithms to recover images of macromolecules. In particular the candidate will:

• Develop new algorithms to phase diffraction data of ensembles of diffraction datasets, such as obtained in a time-resolved measurement
• Develop methods to include different data sources (coherent X-ray scattering, cryo-electron images, fluorescence correlations etc.)
• Test these algorithms using simulated and experimental data
• Assist in data collection and analysis at X-ray facilities
• Help guide the design of new experiments
• Communicate their findings in written and oral form, and document and archive software
• They will also contribute their expertise to other imaging and diffraction experiments of the Cluster

• independent planning, organizing and realizing digitalization campaigns (Multispectral Imaging) in libraries and archives in Germany and abroad
• development of standards for multispectral analysis (especially for organic carrier materials), adaptation of measurement procedures along diverse materials

In this exciting novel project, the influence of single water molecules attached to building blocks of life, e.g., adenine, thymine, or uracil, on the photo-induced electronic dynamics will be investigated in isolated microsolvated systems. The size selected clusters will be studied using photoelectron- and ion-coincidence-imaging techniques. Recording and correlating all photo fragments allows for a reconstruction of the complete dynamics potentially even in the molecular frame. Furthermore, the dynamics of specific and unspecific hydrogen bond interactions will be investigated by varying the distance between the solvent and the biomolecule while studying the induced photo-driven processes. The above-mentioned studies will be done in an ultrahigh vacuum using molecular beams and light sources such as high-intensity lasers, synchrotrons, and free-electron lasers (FELs).
