PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Analytical chemistry with a focus on landscape ecotoxicology

which is one of the basic chemistry subjects, is about the characterisation of samples, i.e., to determine how samples are composed, what chemical compounds they contain and how much of each compound they contain. Research in analytical chemistry aims to develop new analytical techniques and methods. Important application areas are in food, environmental science, biotechnology, bioenergy, medical and pharmaceutical science. The PhD candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team at Lund University who over the next 6 years will collaborate to investigate the sublethal effects of commonly used pesticides in different species of insects. The project covers fields such as analytical chemistry, genetics, metabolomics, ecology, and physiology, and includes laboratory as well as field work. Chemical pesticides play an integral role in controlling agricultural pests, however, their sublethal consequences for non-target species are often overlooked. Most of these pesticides are neurotoxins, yet how they affect the brain and its function in among insect species is poorly understood. The aim of the PhD project is to develop new analytical methods to detect, identify, and quantify pesticides in insects, insect brains, and other relevant samples collected from pesticide high-risk landscapes. Also, lab-raised insects exposed to pesticides will be studied. Synergies across disciplines will allow identification of pesticide high-risk agricultural landscapes, as well as to achieve a sub-brain resolution analysis. The PhD student will develop new analysis methods based on supercritical fluid chromatography coupled to low- and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The PhD candidate will also gain expertise on spatial modelling in agricultural landscapes, landscape ecotoxicology, and insect neuroanatomy.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Energy Sciences with focus on experimental and numerical studies of jet engine combustion with SAF

In the EU-funded project Circular Fuels involving nine participating organizations from seven EU countries, we will integrate concentrated solar heat (CSH), solar electrical energy using PV panels, and thermochemical conversion of bio-based waste materials to produce sustainable transportation fuels for aviation. The use of solar energy removes the need to burn any fraction of the pyrolysis products to heat the pyrolysis process, allowing us to use the by-products of pyrolysis for other purposes. Our main objective is to maximize the fraction of bio jet fuel and analyze all component fractions that may be suitable as other transportation fuel products to maximize the profitability of the concept. The proposed new thermal pyrolysis process pathway is not yet standardized. Therefore, we will perform initial testing for the required standardization, including material and chemical compatibility and turbine combustion tests. This doctoral project is a sub-project of the Circular Fuels consortia and have the objective to investigate the combustion properties of the jet fuel(s) developed by other partners in the project. This investigation will be performed experimentally and numerically by comparing experimental and numerical simulation results with each other, and with results from reference fuels such as Jet A. Different flame configurations, ranging from small laminar bunsen-burner flames to large turbulent swirl stabilized flames, will be examined. State of the art non-intrusive experimen-tal techniques as well as state of the art simulation models will be used. The PhD student with work together with other PhD students performing similar type of investigations for other fuels and configurations.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in sustainable urban governance of naturescapes

The doctoral student will work in a multi- and transdisciplinary team on a Horizon Europe research and innovation programme NATURESCAPES: Nature-based solutions for climate resilient, nature positive and socially just communities in diverse landscapes, which is coordinated by Utrecht University, and which includes 10 partners from nine countries. Nature-based solutions (NBS) are interventions designed to use the properties of nature to address multiple sustainability challenges and contribute to biodiversity. Despite their growing popularity, we lack an understanding of the synergies and trade-offs that multiple NBS bring and of who benefits and under which conditions. The challenge of implementing NBS remains significant. We need to understand how NBS can support transformative change on the ground. Moving beyond individual NBS to the naturescapes that they generate, the project will advance the assessment of synergies and trade-offs that NBS generate. Naturescape is the assemblage of NBS within a landscape whose character is the result of the action and interaction of natural and societal factors.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in theoretical computer science and/or combinatorial optimization

The MIAO research group has a unique profile in that we are doing cutting-edge research both on the mathematical foundations of efficient computation and on state-of-the-art practical algorithms for real-world problems. This creates a very special environment, where we do not only conduct in-depth research on different theoretical and applied topics, but where different lines of research cross-fertilise each other and unexpected and exciting synergies often arise. Much of the activities of the group revolve around powerful algorithmic paradigms such as, e.g., Boolean satisfiability (SAT) solving, Gröbner basis computations, integer linear programming, and constraint programming. This leads to classical questions in computational complexity theory—though often with new, fascinating twists—but also involves work on devising clever algorithms that can exploit the power of such paradigms in practice. Our most recent new line of research is on how to verify the correctness of state-of-the-art algorithms for combinatorial optimization. Such algorithms are often highly complex, and even mature commercial solvers are known to sometimes produce wrong results. Our work on designing a new generation of certifying combinatorial solvers, which output not only a solution but also a machine-verifiable mathematical proof that this solution is correct, has already led to prestigious AAAI ’22 distinguished paper and SAT ’22 best paper awards for our work, but many more exciting problems are still waiting to be solved!
