There is a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position at the Centre for the Science of Learning & Technology (SLATE), Faculty of Psychology, within Learning Analytics. The fixed-term position is for a period of 3 years. The Centre for the Science of Learning & Technology (SLATE), located at the Faculty of Psychology, is a learning sciences research centre that carries out interdisciplinary research on the use of data and data analytic approaches (learning analytics) to understand learning, teaching, and creative knowledge processes across the full learning lifespan. We are a dynamic and including milieu of around 20 persons, including faculty, researchers, adjuncts, postdocs, PhDs candidates, and support staff. All employees are expected to contribute to the success of the Centre.

The successful candidate will be employed at the Department of Mathematics and, depending on project, be included in the Statistics or the Fluid Mechanics research group. Available thematic areas and supervisors:

The position is connected to understanding environmental impact on gene regulation. The topical frame includes data analysis, building models, and investigations on how various environmental stressors impact protein synthesis by the use of various high throughput sequencing-based methods.

The successful candidate will be employed at the Department of Informatics and integrated into the Computational Biology Unit (CBU) and the Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology.

This position is connected to marine geology/geophysics, with a main focus on sustainability, renewable energy, or geohazards relevant to the coast of Norway.

The successful candidate will be employed at the Department of Earth Science and included in the research group on Quaternary geology and Paleo Climate. The candidate will also be a part of the Bergen Offshore Wind Center (BOW) and The Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR).

The primary objective of the postdoctoral position is to qualify the appointee for work in top academic positions. Teaching and/or other qualifying duties might be included if the appointee lacks such experience. The UiB-contract may, under certain conditions, be extended by up to one year if a fellow acquires sufficient funding from other sources than SEAS.

This position is connected to the Facility for advanced isotopic research and monitoring of weather, climate and biogeochemical cycling (FARLAB). FARLAB is Norway’s national light stable isotope facility, run by the Department of Earth Science and Geophysical institute at the University of Bergen.

The position is connected to ongoing STS (science and technology studies) research on national and international/global nexus issues related to aquaculture, including the issue of novel feeds and the development and implementation of circular economy policies, as well as the introduction of RRI (responsible research and innovation) and participatory and transdisciplinary dimensions into aquaculture R&I. As the research has a strong STS orientation, it finds sufficient infrastructure at our research centre at the Faculty of Humanities.

This position is connected to marine optics with emphasis on development and use of instrumentation and numerical models for light scattering and absorption by marine particles, where the observations and modelling will be used to improve both environmental monitoring and optical communication in different coastal and fjord waters, including darkened waters due to increased land sediment runoff.

There are two available postdoctoral positions related to measurement technology for smart sensors in an underwater network and nano technology for anti-biofouling. The research topics should be related to one of the following areas:

Acoustic measurement technology for non-destructive integrity measurement of underwater installations using ultrasonic guided waves
Nanotechnology within one of the two following subject areas: 1) Diamond-based sensors for subsea monitoring 2) Anti-biofouling coatings for subsea solutions
On-board pre-processing and optimization for marine smart sensors (microelectronics/measurement science)

The successful candidates will be employed at the Department of Earth Science and included in the SapienCE Centre of Excellence on Early Sapiens Behaviour.

The positions are dedicated two different research areas:

• Position 1: Modelling the emergence of innovation, behavioural development and migration in early Homo Sapiens in coastal southern Africa
• Position 2: Climate reconstructions of southern Africa using proxy methods connected with periods of early human behavioural evolution

The positions are open for research on working conditions for maritime workers, where one position is dedicated to ‘maritime safety’ and the other position is dedicated to ‘non-standard work schedules’.

• Position 1: Research related to maritime safety will be associated with the Operational Psychology Research Group, supervisor: Professor Bjørn Sætrevik
• Position 2: Research related to non-standard working hours will be associated with the Bergen Sleep and Chronobiology Network, supervisor: Professor Ståle Pallesen

These two positions are part of the Climate Narratives project combining natural science, social science, and art together with local indigenous knowledge to identify challenges and possibilities in the face of current and as well as future climate changes. The main topical frame will be on Greenland ice sheet dynamics and its impact on local fjord circulation and global sea level. Within this main topical frame there are two available positions open for research on the following sub-topics:

• Position 1: Ice-ocean interactions and the impact of Greenland outlet glaciers on fjord circulation, hydrology, and ecosystems
• Position 2: Ice sheets and sea level dynamics

This position is open for anthropological research on changing human relations with the ocean within a variety of research topics/sub-topics. The successful candidate will be employed at the Department of Social Anthropology, at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

This position is connected to the field of salmon louse biology and fish immunology. Knowledge of the host-parasite interactions of salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) and its salmonid hosts is the basis to find solutions to combat salmon lice infestations on farmed salmon, which are currently the biggest challenge for the Norwegian aquaculture and a strong threat to wild salmonids. Improved salmon louse treatments strategies will improve the sustainability of salmon aquaculture, decreasing its negative effects on both farmed and wild salmonids. The research in this project is specifically aimed at vaccine development and includes a deeper understanding of the lice-fish interaction on a molecular level, vaccine design and immunological responses of the fish towards lice and vaccines.

This position is connected to the thematic area of settling biology of marine invertebrate larvae. Focus will be on the environmental factors that influences the substrate preferences in sessile organisms along a north-south costal climate gradient. The study area includes the European Atlantic coast from northern Norway in the north to the Mediterranean Sea in the south. Applicants are welcome to suggest research ideas within topics such as:

• Settlement studies of barnacles and/or related crustacean groups
• Modified settlement behavior of invasive species
• Latitude effects on substrate preference
• Dispersal and population genetics related to choice of settling site

In all living organisms, there is a subset of small coenzyme molecules that participate in thousands of biochemical reactions, thereby enabling and coordinating metabolism. In the course of evolution, the same molecules have attained more and more key roles as regulators of virtually all biological processes. HubMOL aims to unravel the mechanistic principles of how these molecules of life interact to enable and control both metabolism and signaling. The project combines world-leading competences in synthetic and analytical chemistry, biochemistry, molecular genetics, bioinformatics and advanced technology development. Through their direct association with established medical research centers (NeuroSysMed with a focus on neurodegeneration, KG Jebsen Center on Parkinson’s Disease, EU Horizon2020 MESI-STRAT project on breast cancer), the core scientists will closely collaborate with clinicians to apply the findings from basic research to disease diagnostics and treatment.
