(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral Researcher Position (3 years) in Political Science as part of the ERC-funded Lobbying (A)symmetry Project

The LOBBYMETRY project addresses two types of imbalances in lobbying: 1) mobilisation asymmetries, which exclude some actors from the policy debate, and 2) information asymmetries, which empower specific groups in their exchanges with policymakers. The project analyses these asymmetries and their relationship with each other, as well as their effects on the ways in which sectional and public interests feed into policymaking.

The project studies these asymmetries across populations of interest organisations in twelve European countries and at European Union level, as well as within the climate and digital policy fields, which vary strongly in mobilisation asymmetries and constitute areas where well- or ill-informed policies have vast consequences for humanity at large. LOBBYMETRY strives to open the black-box of policymaker-lobbyist information exchange within these areas, develop measures of informational quality and accuracy in lobbying, and evaluate how and when lobbying pulls outcomes away from the public interest.

Methodologically, the project combines cross-country surveys, cross-venue data on at least 100 issues in climate and digital policy, and different forms of participant observation of the information exchanges between policymakers and interest organisations in i) natural and ii) researcher-controlled settings. This combination of methods will generate unprecedented quantitative and qualitative evidence on lobbyist-policymaker information exchange in varying contexts.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc on the Effects of Biochar on Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Nutrient Leaching and Carbon Sequestration in Rewetted Cultivated Peat Soils

The Sections of Chemistry and Physics and Soil and Plant Sciences at the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences invite applications for a postdoc position on the effects of biochar on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, nutrient fate and carbon sequestration in rewetted, cultivated peat soils. The position is open from 1. September 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter, and the position has a duration of 24 months.

This position is part of the RESTORE project funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark Thematic Call on Green Research, and aims to develop a new rewetting solution for drained, cultivated peat soils to help reach climate goals. Biochar, the highly stable carbon residue from biomass pyrolysis, has been shown to reduce GHG emissions from agricultural fields, and to sorb and store nutrients and pollutants, thus can potentially multiply the climate change mitigation effect of rewetting peatlands, while safeguarding the environment. Because of its recalcitrant nature, biochar soil amendment is also one of the few technologies that can sequester carbon in large quantities. However, to date biochar’s effects on GHG, nutrient, and C dynamics in peat soils and their microbiome under rewetted, anoxic conditions are poorly understood

(12) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc of kmer-based population genomics

Although a number of computational tools exist for the analysis of population scale genome datasets, these are often computationally intensive. In response to this, a number of developments have recently been made in the use of k-mer based methods as a more resource-efficient tool (for example https://doi.org/10.1186/s13059-019-1632-4). While such methods show promise when applied to in silico generated datasets, their performance on real datasets is less well understood. The 18 month postdoctoral position advertised here was created as part of the DIVERSEA consortium (https://www.ntnu.edu/diversea), to address this issue, through exploration of the potential of several recent k-mer based tools on real biological datasets, and in doing so identify future developments that are needed in the area. This position is based in the group of Prof Tom Gilbert at the Globe Institute, with additional collaboration with Assoc Prof Siavash Mirarab at the University of California San Diego.

(24) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in the role of immune system for the development of resistance to antibiotics in biofilm infections

The nature of bacterial adaptation to the infectious microenvironment and its role for the efficacy of antibiotics remains poorly characterized. We propose to map the evolutionary trajectories of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the infectious microenvironment and apply these insights to predict an optimal treatment strategy to limit development of AMR. The aims of the project: 1) To identify the genetic pathways of antimicrobial resistance development in the infectious microenvironment through experimental evolution in an animal infection model; 2) To investigate the dynamics of the host-pathogen interactions during evolution of antimicrobial resistance; 3) To develop a mathematical modeling framework to translate the experimental findings to potential clinical treatment strategies which limit antimicrobial resistance; 4) To test the potential of changing the infectious microenvironment by antioxidants to prevent antimicrobial resistance. The project focus on development of AMR in infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms, which represent a large burden for the society, causing a variety of difficult to treat infections. Your tasks will be: 1. to conduct AMR evolution experiments in a mouse model of biofilm lung infection developed in our lab; 2. to identify genes that alter antibiotic efficacy in the infectious microenvironment by genome-wide mutant fitness profiling using P. aeruginosa transposon (Tn) library and Tn sequencing; 3. to map changes in gene expression in both the pathogen and the host by dual RNA sequencing during in vivo evolution in the animal model. These experimental findings will be used by our international collaborator prof. Coen von Hasselt from Leiden University, The Netherlands, for mathematical modeling and will allow us to make predictions of the evolution of AMR in vivo and to design therapeutic interventions that target evolvability-modifying pathways that could be used in combination with antibiotics to block common mutational paths to resistance.

About The University of Copenhagen, Denmark – Official Website

The University of Copenhagen is a public research university in Copenhagen, Denmark. Founded in 1479, the University of Copenhagen is the second-oldest university in Scandinavia, and ranks as one of the top universities in the Nordic countries and Europe.

Its establishment sanctioned by Pope Sixtus IV, the University of Copenhagen was founded by Christian I of Denmark as a Catholic teaching institution with a predominantly theological focus. In 1537, it was re-established by King Christian III as part of the Lutheran Reformation. Up until the 18th century, the university was primarily concerned with educating clergymen. Through various reforms in the 18th and 19th century, the University of Copenhagen was transformed into a modern, secular university, with science and the humanities replacing theology as the main subjects studied and taught.

The University of Copenhagen consists of six different faculties, with teaching taking place in its four distinct campuses, all situated in Copenhagen. The university operates 36 different departments and 122 separate research centres in Copenhagen, as well as a number of museums and botanical gardens in and outside the Danish capital. The University of Copenhagen also owns and operates multiple research stations around Denmark, with two additional ones located in Greenland. Additionally, The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and the public hospitals of the Capital and Zealand Region of Denmark constitute the conglomerate Copenhagen University Hospital.

A number of prominent scientific theories and schools of thought are namesakes of the University of Copenhagen. The famous Copenhagen Interpretation of quantum mechanics was conceived at the Niels Bohr Institute, which is part of the university. The Department of Political Science birthed the Copenhagen School of Security Studies, which is also named after the university. Others include the Copenhagen School of Theology and the Copenhagen School of Linguistics.
