We are currently seeking candidates for two postdoctoral positions to work on exciting research projects. 

The first project focuses on demonstrating the unique advantages of using dual-type atom arrays for reconfigurable local quantum control, and rapid, non-demolition stabilizer readout. These features not only pave the way for fault-tolerant quantum computation but also opens new opportunities for exploring frontier topics in quantum information dynamics.

The second project is developing a novel approach to establish a deterministic quantum interface between stationary atomic qubits and flying optical photons, without the need for optical cavities. Our goal is to realize reconfigurable quantum optical links across remote atomic qubits in different atom arrays, a crucial step toward modular quantum computation.

The successful candidate will develop a comprehensive modeling approach to quantify tree species health and forecast tree species decline at a large scale, linking these metrics with forest composition. This role involves employing data fusion methods, integrating forest structural characteristics, climatic, and topographic variables with machine learning algorithms to predict areas at risk for reduced forest vitality and tree species decline.

You will perform independent self-driven research towards the development of a “modelling suite”, as per RECIPE’s WP2 objective. The RECIPE modelling suite shall allow (i) to model the various ways through which a hazard can propagate throughout the energy system, at different time- (from second or minute to days or seasons) and spatial (continental, country, local) scales, as well as across infrastructures (electricity, gas, communication), and (ii) to identify and quantify the technical solutions (operational / software processes or infrastructure investments) that can mitigate the hazard propagation or allow for a quick system recovery. 

You will work in close collaboration with researchers at FEN, using and expanding quantitative analysis modelling and optimization tools developed by FEN researchers. In addition, you will collaborate with researchers from other groups with different scientific background (ICT, machine learning, reliability engineering, economics, environment) as an active actor in the transdisciplinary research performed in RECIPE. In addition to the development of appropriate modelling and optimization tools, your work will include collecting data and relevant information, contributing in the project directions and modelling needs and presenting results. Finally, you will be expected to lead the writing of reports and scientific papers resulting from the project work.

Our group is actively developing a novel photoacid-based approach for efficient CO2 capture, optimizing both the local chemical environment in photoacids and their molecular structure to enhance sorption capacity and stability. We seek a postdoctoral researcher who will contribute to these efforts.

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Fellow in Machine Learning for Infectious Disease Diagnostics to join our dynamic and interdisciplinary research team. The successful candidate will apply machine learning (ML) and data science approaches to identify and define volatile biomarkers associated with bacterial activity in urine samples, with a focus on diagnostics and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiling.

Work at the interface of engineering, data science, microbiology and clinical research. The work might be based on theoretical modelling and/or empirical analysis. The research will ideally combine insights from economics and e.g. computer science.

We offer a three-year fully funded postdoctoral position embedded within the Mucosal Immunology lab headed by Prof. Emma Slack at ETH Zürich (Hönggerberg Campus). You will work as part of a collaborative project together with scientists and engineers in the groups of Prof. Adrian Egli (Medical Microbiology, Zurich University Hospital), Prof. Andreas Güntner (Human-centered sensing laboratory, D-MAVT, ETH Zurich), Prof. Catherine Jutzeler (Biomedical Data Science, D-HEST, ETH Zurich) and Prof. Thomas Kessler (Urology, Balgrist Hospital Zurich).

The project will study the links between bacterial species and strain-level metabolic capacity, patient phenotype, and urine volatile metabolome. Rational combinations of molecules that are informative for identifying pathogen species and risks will be shared with our collaborating groups for targeted nanosensor design and device engineering to produce novel, rapid UTI diagnostics.

The successful candidate will work on designing and conducting human experiments using a multimodal design. A central focus of the project will be using pupillometry, (brainstem) functional magnetic resonance imaging, electroencephalography, and bio-/neurofeedback and pharmacological approaches to assess and modulate brainstem and cortical activity, exploring their role in regulating arousal and modulating bodily functions.

We are looking for someone with a Ph.D. in chemistry or related area and a background in synthetic chemistry (broadly defined). Previous experience in air- and moisture-free manipulations (ie. Schlenk technique, glovebox operations) and electrochemistry are desirable but not essential.

The postdoctoral researcher will focus on:

• Developing and implementing a state-of-the-art treatment of the xenon and argon liquid phase using electronic structure calculations.
• Developing computer code for computing ionization rates with general dark matter-electron interactions.
• Exploring appropriate descriptions of electron final states.
• Calculating dark-matter-induced ionization rates for liquid xenon and argon, with full treatment of final states, in-medium screening, and general dark matter-electron interaction types.
