Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral fellowship: Aquaporins in health and pathology
A highly motivated postdoctoral scientist is sought to work on a project designed to extend our understanding of the molecular basis of aquaporins (AQPs). AQPs are evolutionary conserved transmembrane proteins that are responsible for water and glycerol regulation in the human body, but also in many other organisms. Besides solute transport, AQPs have been shown to be involved in cellular signaling, cell migration, and cell-cell adhesion. For instance, AQPs are the main glycerol channel in the endocrine pancreas, mediating rapid flux of glycerol in β-cells and ultimately insulin secretion. Interestingly, it was also recently reported that AQPs in fruit flies have a central role in metabolism. The overall goal of the project is to study the structure of aquaporins using single particle cryo-EM and combine that with functional studies at the cellular level to resolve its mechanism of action. In addition, AQPs are therapeutic targets, thus the project will also include the development of putative AQP blockers, that can be used for treating diseases and/or to selectively kill insects expressing aquaporins. The project will have good access to state-of-the-art facilities within the medical, natural science and engineering faculties, as well as being located in close proximity to the nearby MAX IV synchrotron where also the Lund cryo-EM facility is situated.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral fellowship: Transthyretin amyloidosis using X-rays, neutrons, and EM
A highly motivated postdoctoral scientist is sought to work on a project designed to extend our understanding of the molecular basis of transthyretin amyloidosis Read more here. Human transthyretin (TTR) is a protein that transports thyroxine and retinol-binding protein (RBP) in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid. Wild-type TTR is intrinsically amyloidogenic, but a large number of TTR mutants have been identified that are associated with early-onset amyloidosis and where there are remarkable tissue specificities. This project seeks to gather atomic/molecular level information on different TTR mutants using crystallography (X-ray and neutron), cryo-EM, and a wide range of other biophysical techniques. It will make use of the MAX-IV and ESS facilities in Sweden as well as the ESRF and ILL X-ray/neutron sources in Grenoble, France. Where possible it is planned to carry out comparative studies of amyloid material derived from in vitro and ex vivo sources. The project will have good access to state-of-the-art facilities within the medical, natural science and engineering faculties, as well as being located in close proximity to the nearby MAX-IV synchrotron and ESS neutron beam facilities on the Science Village campus near the Lund city centre.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral fellow in phytoplankton ecology
Cyanobacterial blooms pose a serious health and environmental hazard in surface waters around the world because they produce algal toxins, especially microcystins, which are toxic to humans, wildlife and livestock. This is particularly problematic for surface waters used as drinking water sources. Unfortunately, there is a lack of reliable tools to monitor and predict which factors can lead to high toxicity. The reason is that blooms are composed of strains that produce microcystins and those that do not. The aim of this research project is to determine which factors drive the toxicity of algal blooms and ultimately use this knowledge to develop an early warning system. The approach will involve both field and laboratory experiments. The project includes developing a method that can provide early warning to drinking water producers and other stakeholders of toxic algal blooms. The project is being run in collaboration with personnel at the drinking water producer Sydvatten AB.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in Biomedical Engineering with a focus on power ultrasonics
The project you will work on aims at developing high-power ultrasonic devices driven by lead-free piezoelectric materials. Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) has been the dominating driving source of high-power ultrasonic devices due to its excellent piezoelectric properties and mature fabrication techniques. However, PZT contains a high content of lead (~60% in mass), which may cause severe environmental issues and is consequently on EU’s Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive list of materials to be phased out. In this project, you will investigate the possibility to replace PZTs by lead-free piezoelectric materials in high-power ultrasonic devices without sacrificing their performance. Your research work will primarily focus on the construction of high-power ultrasonic devices and the experimental characterization of those devices. You will also develop a theoretical or a numerical model taken into account the nonlinearity under high-power conditions. You will communicate with the material scientists in both industry and academia.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral position in physics with focus on ultrafast laser diagnostics
The development of lasers that deliver ultra-short pulses, especially femtosecond lasers, has enabled significant improvements for a variety of laser-based measurement techniques, but also brand new diagnostic concepts. Ultra-short laser pulses offer a number of very attractive diagnostic features, namely extremely high time resolution, extremely high peak power and a very broad laser emission spectrum. These properties are particularly attractive for nonlinear laser spectroscopic techniques, such as multi-photon laser-induced fluorescence (MP-LIF) and Coherent anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (CARS). Development of such fs-laser-based techniques for quantitative measurements of species concentrations and temperature in fundamental studies of combustion of renewable fuels, primarily ammonia and metals, is the focus of the research project for the postdoc.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctor in private international law with focus on maritime and EU law
Private international law consists of legal norms which regulate relationships between international private legal subjects which are based on voluntary legal acts. The topic carbon capture and storage (CCS) is at the crossroads of law, governance, sustainability and technology and involves subjects of both public and private law.Transboundary alternatives for CO2 transport and offshore storage are necessary preconditions for the viability of CCS. Once the carbon is captured, the transportation (national and transboundary) can take place by road, rail, ships or pipes.
The post-doctoral position is situated within the project titled “Sustainable Carbon Capture Transportation and Storage: Liability and Governance in Light of International and EU Law.” It addresses the emerging practise of mitigating greenhouse gas emissions through innovative CCS technologies. With a special focus on the transportation of carbon streams by ships, the project relates to the potential liabilities arising during carbon transportation by ship and the implications for long-term liability.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral position in Combustion Physics and Chemistry
At the Division of Combustion Physics a postdoc is now recruited for the European Union Project CAIPIRINH3A. The main goal of the research performed at our Division within this project is to provide a detailed kinetic mechanism and perform reliable modeling studies for NOx prediction and control in NH3 combustion applications. Experimental results used to validate the numerical model will be based on flame structure measurements of NH3 flames at atmospheric pressure employing Raman spectroscopy arranged with multiple laser beam passages for high detection sensitivity, as well as time-resolved optical emission spectroscopy from ammonia flames after a single pulse nanosecond discharge. The validated mechanism will be incorporated in dedicated global solvers (incorporating plasma effects) which will be used to calculate fundamental combustion characteristics of ammonia/air mixture with and without plasma. The kinetic model will be tested against results from these experiments, other results obtained by the project partners and literature data and will output different characteristics of NH3 combustion including burning velocities, ignition delay times, species profiles in flames, chemiluminescence in thermal and plasma-affected flames.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral fellow in Physical Chemistry
This project introduces silicon substrates with a switchable magnetic contrast layer (MCL) for polarised neutron reflectometry experiments (PNR) at solid/liquid interface to study soft matter surface layers. The structural and compositional information in a typical reflectometry experiment are obtained by collecting experimental data with different isotopic contrasts on the same sample. This approach is normally referred to as contrast matching, which can be achieved by using solvents with different isotopic contrast, e. g. different H2O/D2O ratio, and/or by selective deuteration of the molecules. However, some soft matter systems might be perturbed by this approach, or it might be difficult to implement, particularly in the case of biological samples. Here solid substrates with a MCL are an appealing alternative, as the magnetic contrast with the substrate can be used to partially recover the information on the sample structure. The project is part of a larger collaborative project, “Maximizing information content in neutron reflectivity data by optimised magnetic reference layers” between Linköping, Uppsala and Lund universities, Science and Technology Facilities Council, ISIS Neutron and Muon Sourcs, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in UK and European Spallation Source – ESS, financed by the Swedish Research Council.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral fellow in Experimental Particle Physics on the Light Dark Matter eXperiment (LDMX)
The overarching theme of this project is to get ready for LDMX data, and the work will be conducted in close connection with the international LDMX collaboration, in which Lund University is the only non-US participant for the time being. One exciting milestone for LDMX is a beam test planned at SLAC in 2025, for the first time collecting data at the actual beam line for LDMX. During the first year, roughly, this project will be focused on the gathering and in particular on the analysis of this test beam data, mainly from the prototype of the hadronic calorimeter.
Another priority in this project will be to study the capabilities of LDMX to handle pile-up (multiple electrons hitting the target at the same time) in more detail. This will mainly be based on simulations studies of potential backgrounds, detector performance, and physics sensitivities. One concrete example is the use of different codes for simulating critical backgrounds, to compare these predictions and to develop methods for how to measure these backgrounds in data. The project also aims to explore to which extent machine learning methods can help with these tasks, e.g. object reconstruction and signal vs background discrimination. This will become more of a focus later in the project.
There is some flexibility in the research programme for this position, and details can be tailored to your specific interests and expertise. There will also be the opportunity to work with questions of climate sustainability in LDMX/HEP, if that is something you are interested in.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral fellow in Physical Chemistry
The candidate will study the role of the softness of an individual colloid on the structuring and macroscopic properties of a suspension under flow. Suspensions of microgels (soft deformable colloids) will be studied by combining small-angle x-ray and neutron scattering to probe both the particle-to-particle arrangement and the shape of the individual colloid. We will optimise and realise two shear cells, one to probe small-angle scattering (SAS) in the flow-plane, the optimal plane to observe deformations of a material, and the second to probe high applied shear (>104 s-1). The cells might also enable simultaneous polarised microscopy, rheology and SAS experiments. Microgel suspensions are a textbook example of complex fluids showing fluid-to-crystal transitions, shear thinning, shear banding and the possibility to form glasses or jammed systems. These phenomena are common to most soft materials, both synthetic and bio-relevant, such as protein suspensions, saliva, and blood. SAS experiments in the flow plane and at unprecedently high shear rates will allow us to identify the key parameters in the softness of a colloidal particle that affect the flow properties of the suspension and the role of particle softness on the formation of bands that flow differently. The knowledge developed in this project will pave the way to the design of soft colloids for bio-medical applications, emulsion-stabilized formulations of cosmetics, detergents and shampoos.
